@dicin29 That's because the military made sort of a pact with manufacturers that the vehicles are not to be brought back to the states when they were done with them.If we were flooded with surplus military stuff, noone would buy civilian trucks. It was the same for all kinds of other equipment. It either stayed behind, or sometimes got dumped in the ocean.
@Dieselolds : When a 10,100 lb. open bodied truck rolls over a rollbar will be of no use and only inhibit the ejection of the bodies in the back. In the situation portrayed, the truck would likely just lay onto its right side and not complete a roll-over resulting in no injuries besides snow covered, cold passengers.
@BavarianBomberWrench A rollbar helps to stop the truck from rolling over, now it just have the edges from the cargo bed to stop it from rollig over and crushing 5+ persons. If the truck rolls over completly the rollcage will make it harder for people to get injuried. A rollcage will not inhibit ejection of passangers any more than the wood frame already on the truck.
@Dieselolds : You obviously have no experience w/ CCKW's or rolling over large trucks. A rollbar on such a truck will not prevent a roll-over unless the tubes are at least 1/4" thick, 3" diameter and spaced no more than 3 feet apart and have "V" supports at the base of each tube where it meets the wooden cargo floor. This would result in a maze of tubes that will restrict the quick exit of people sitting in the cargo area. Since there are no seatbelts the rollbar would cause injury/death.
@BavarianBomberWrench I have driven and owned CCKW trucks for 16 years now. How many years experience do you got with the CCKW trucks? I have also a military drivers license with offroad driving. I have driven the M621 from 1968, it got a 1 bar rollcage in high tensile strengt steel. It will prevent the truck from rolling around and if it was to roll completly it will reduce the chances of getting crushed dramaticly. Today the M621 it replaced bu the Scania P93, it have a 3 bar rollcage.
@Dieselolds: Good, then you are not a rube! I have responded to numerous accidents that involved off-road vehicles with and without rollbars. The ones with rollbars and packed w/ unsecured passengers were usually the ones with personal injury due to people being trapped & pinned under the rollbar. If each person was secured to a seat via 5 point harness the rollbar would certainly be beneficial. Unsecured passengers are much safer if they can be ejected w/out hinderance. Have a good day.
@BavarianBomberWrench When the truck is on its own wheels there is a 220-230 cm footprint to prevent it from rolling but as soon as the truck is on its side the footprint is only 150 cm and the truck is prone to roll completly but with only a rollbar like one of the canvas bows on this truck the passengers are not restricted and the footprint when the truck is on its side is 270 cm and thats a huge improvment over the 150 cm footprint and 225 cm hight + still possible to survive under the truck.
