MGS 1 is the best place so long as you can tolerate older graphics (Which really people should, graphics don't make the game people >_>) but if you are really into going in chronological order, start with MGS3, then Portable Ops, then Peace Walker, then MGS1, then MGS2, then MGS4

well this is direct a sequel to MGS3 and Portable ops, if u have a ps2, get MGS3, if u have a psp, get PO, but i HIGHLY recoment that u play ALL OF THEM!

@1994chocolatemilk I would start with the original Metal Gear for MSX. You can find Metal Gear 1 and 2 on the 2nd disc of Metal Gear Solid 3: subsistence in their original MSX versions. Then I would go with MGS1, then MGS2, then MGS3, then MGS: Portable Ops, then MGS4

Hideo Kojima couldn't stay away from Metal Gear. I thought I heard him say in the bonus disc of MGS4 that any future MGS games are up to the fans to make. He seemed to have left it open ended for fans and future developers. I don't happen to agree that the natural state of man is war.
