  • A year after this her voice completely changed. It was deep and raspy. But she still sounded good. This does sound like "This will be"

  • his makes me think of a song by Natalie Cole the title of which I don't remember

  • @ksionc100 You mean this will be.

  • sassy Bitatch - Man I love this woman!! 2:05 that is one mega-powered orgasmic squall. She is in top form here. God Bless her heart and soul!!

  • alegra mi espiritu aretha!!!!!! ;-)

  • All I can say is ...

... What a talented confident BIATCH!

    OMG! @ 2:38

  • I'm sorry but that was disrespectful. That wasn't necessary. I kinda get what ur saying in slangful way...but maybe pick another name.

  • All I have to say is WOW...

  • This was Aretha's answer to Natalie's This will be an everlasting love. Sounds just like it. Natalie was making a name for herself and gaining on ree but Aretha had nothing to worry about. There is only 1 aretha. The 70's were hit an miss for Aretha though. I attribute it to the wrong producers and songs.

  • I have that record. Even a drink past her prime her talent is just astonishing. I would take this over the Cole track any day. I mean we are talking Aretha Franklin although not enough to make me forget "Don't Play That Song" this still isn't bad at all.

  • I think Cole's crisp voice was better for this type of song. Aretha's heavier voice is better on songs where she can express full voice, runs, ad libs and hold notes. Like Jennifer Hudson's voice is not suited for pop which requires crisp diction phrasing and a different breath pattern. I think this record would have made a splash for Ree had it been first btu coming after Coles was a hit made it seem like a desperate attempt to catch the train. R&B had moved on. No ones on top forever.

  • PS. Please understand I do respect your opinion and I am not arguing or figting with you just giving my viewpoint. :-) It seems a lot of people get mad and want to start slinging insults and expletives when ppl simply comment on a video. lol

  • If you listen to Aretha's 1968 or 67 version of you send me, the arrangement sounds like Natalie's this will be, which makes me think that Natalie's producer's copied the way Aretha arranged you send me.

  • That is quite possible. You know in the music biz people borrow, copy, and cover all the time.

  • I agree. I do believe this song was in response to "this will be", but listening to "you send me" makes me think that Aretha may not have been responding to "this will" but demonstrating that she did it first, but that's just a thought.

  • Yes probably, and her "So damn happy " tends to drive the nail even further. Talking about missed opportunities, Aretha also turned down Son of Preacher Man , and let Dusty springfield have a hit with it - at the same period she recorded Let It Be which was written by Lennon/Mc Cartney for her, but let it lay on the shelf for months until the Beatles got tired of waiting and released it first. Two more big opportunities missed.

  • I'm glad the Beatles and Dusty Springfield hit with those songs instead of Aretha because I think their versions are better. And I don't usually say that about Aretha Franklin doing covers. Her version of the Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road" is utterly phenomenal. Even a drink past her prime her talent is just unreal.

  • You are right and Aretha has a song called I Adore You and it sound very similar to the melody on You Send Me and Honey I Need Your Love.

  • You are absolutely right. Not only did they actually say they had been inspired by Aretha's piano & vocal arrangement of You send me, but they took this song and some others like "I've got love on my mind" to Aretha first. She turned them down because she thought they sounded too much like things she had previously recorded. She was somewhat right in that, but missed a big commercial opportunity, and let Natalie Cole walk away with honours.

  • The other big opportunity she passed on was when she entered the studio to record the "Upside Down" album , including the song My old piano, with Niles Roger and his accolyte, only to walk out on them and let them do the album with Diana Ross instead. That album would have been another big hit in her career, and would have confirmed her further in her throne :-))) Ah but that's Aretha!

  • This was a nice performance!

  • Aretha Franklin is the one and only QUEEN OF SOUL and that extends to her talent on the piano...there is no comparison....period!

  • True!!!the queennnnnnnn

  • This is Arethas response to This will be Natalie Cole.

  • I love this song!!

  • lol ok thank u dnt get suspend again but keep doing wat cha do...lol

  • i know dat im just say'n deja vu n when u gettin new songz up i miss ya aretha n natalie cole high notes love da james brown n aretha is my number one queen next to mary j blige

  • DEJA VU HUH ISN'T IT FUNNY HOW PEOPLE BACK THAN Was sayin natalie cole was the next queen of soul or the new and they said they were beefin or i think they was or whatever and people say keyshia cole is the new queen of hiphop/soul and its said there beefin'

  • When it comes to music Aretha Franklin is the truth. There are so many great singers out there but this woman is uniquely gifted like no other, and nobody compares to her ability to deliver a soulful song.

  • This was her answer to Natalie Cole's This will be an everlasting love.

  • Only the Queen !!

  • thank you for posting this great performance of the QUEEN

  • I love this lady >>> she rock forever !

  • Aretha was about 37 in this clip...now go and listen to Mariah at 37. So it's not age that did it to Mariah's voice. Because Aretha sounds wonderful here.

  • I don't think in the years to come Aretha Franklin is in any danger of being compared to Mariah Carey, not only because Aretha has a far more remarkable voice in addition to being a phenomenal singer, but the overwrought bombast Carey made throughout the 90s is no match to Aretha's mighty Atlantic recordings.

Mariah's voice sounds the same as it always has, at least to these ears. But more than anything, it's about the quality of the material and the care in how the songs are recorded.

  • Mariah's voice has been a shade of her former self for years, or more correctly until a couple of years ago, but i'm not surprised, the girl drunk like a sailor...now it's getting better again from what i've heard recently in her live performances, her new marriage must have done her well

  • what is not understood is that when Aretha hit the seen She could do more than other artist could she play piano an also the range she has she brought more an when she did she took the music world by storm she has e everything that has been giving to her "THE QUEEN"

  • I couldn't agree with you more. She was talented at playing the piano, also. Her voice along with was magnificent. She had great pitch and tone which I think was a result of her ability to play the piano and she also wrote some her her music. Her late sister Carolyn wrote songs for her and sang along with her as well.

  • Those high belted notes by her and the soprano backing vocalist around 2:05, what note were they hitting? It was funny to me because the backing vocalist hits it, and the Queen matches it...she can't be outdone ;)

  • When this came out her voice was at it's absolute operatic-fire-sweetclearest! The sound on this doesn't 1/2 do justice to the original Jack Jones Show broadcast. but.. i am so happy it's here. She NAILED this when I saw her in 79.

  • if i'm not mistaken, our Diva sang all the vocals on the record!

  • I'll give her my love if she give me her voice for my lifetime. Aretha is one of the best singers of our lifetife but her best dayz are way in the pass. Her gospel tone helps the conviction in her songs.

  • She sounds better live now, then she did in the late 80s and 90s.

  • Nah I disagree her voice went from sugar to shit literally. I think she would've made more out of her career early on if she sold live recording from the past rather then studio work. The only song to me that sounds the same wether its studio or live is the song sparkle from the 70s. Her voice has past away from way back when.

  • in the late 80s and throughout the 90s, My Musical Goddess, delivered the worst concert performances i'd ever seen where money was beeing charged. Horrid sound and PA systems, laziness beyond belief and pathetic presentation. Aretha's vocal erosion was apparent and tragic enuff without the overly loud band arrangements and Vegas medley format

I have seen her 2 x in the past couple years and Lady Soul Soars Again!!!! I was almost levetating from my seat, the show was soo goood!

  • She even confessed in a Jet interview that she's lost her voice during that era. But she is singing with a powerful, renewed vigor, much better than she was on those Diva shows.

  • She needs to find it but like I said her voice is in exile thats for sure and maybe just maybe her vocals past away. She didn't take care of it like she should have.

  • Do not miss your chance to see her now, trust me. I was burned on 5 horrible concerts in the 80s/90s. Every song is DELIVERED now, as opposed to maybe, 2 minutes of good singing in the olD showS.She is WERKIN IT again. I saw Patti, Chaka , Gladys in the same past 2 yrs, and REE won hands down. All the singin was fearless and fierce. She didn't even let the applause come close to finishing , before she pounded the next one out . NO milking the adualtion, for no work, like in the past.

  • Nah I doubt it Gladys may be the only 1 who sound the same as 20 maybe even 30+yrs ago.

  • She's a little rough too. You have to see Ree now to believe it. 14 yrs off the Kools has paid off. Plus she is musically inventive now, and she flies when she sings again.

Gladys needs to move out of Vegas, her show is soo hookey, but your right she can do it, but it's usually on just one song.

  • Shes not as rough sounding as Aretha. Rumor has it on this youtube,Ree don't like Gladys but she thinks the world of Patti is that true? Vocal wise on ree best day (yeah right) Gladys on her worst still would be a threat to ree.

  • Aretha has said some petty things about GK in her book and GK has openly discussed what she describes as Ree's drinkin problem. The volume of Aretha's first rate albums is staggering, whereas GK recorded output since she left Motown is blah to mediocre 95% of the time. I do like GK's standards cd very much though. Her voice sounds quite different

than ever before, i don't know if she choose a different style or her voice has changed.

  • Oh really I didn't know that and in the 70s she did impressions of gk and mavis staples so thats why I found it hard to believe Ree didn't like gk. When did gk speak about ree drinking problem? I also heard Ree a had beef with natalie cole in the 70s but I don't know about what.

  • Ree cancelled (when doesn't she?) in Vegas in about 2000 and GK filled in. GK gave the Star or one of the rags a couple quotes about how I'm concerned about her ..... (sure she was !! she was so busy gamblin back then)

Ree threatened to sue but I don't know what came of it.GK has always had Queen envy, many people thought Ree invented hard soul singin and that Grapevine was a Ree song(per Gladys anyway) I know alot of dummys think Ree did Rescue Me (the original, not her Pizza Hut version)

  • Thats an alot ok info I had no knowlege of. Fontell Bass sung rescue me and grapevine I thought was marvin gaye's song just gladys had a hit with it.

  • your'e right but Gladys says a lot of fans think it was AF's song and of course that would get on GK's nerve. Gk feels that her and Fontella had great hard R&B hits as early as Ree, but Ree gets all the credit for inventing/introducing the revolutionary style, which today is so common that even Country singers and KCF and Bell telephone adds use it.

  • If thats the case then why GK and FB would appear to be in Ree shadow of soul music when they were out around the same time with hit just aswell? Meaning why Ree gets most of the credit regardless of the new style or is it just that?

  • cuz they hit early once and she DOMINATED in 67 on and kept growing abd blowing!

  • Ree came out with hit after hit to drown out FB and GK. So basically she step up her A-game with a new style of soul althought FB and GK were in the same catagory and era.

  • re was the soul diva, she heralded the new era, was on the cover of Time Mag. Just like a few years earlier when Joan Baez was on the cover of Time and and was the queen of folk music.

  • So Ree shaped and molded soul thats what u telling me? "LOL"

  • She was the flagship of the movement.

  • I can agree with that yeah we can say she paved the way for soul singers cuz nobody has gotten much rep like her

  • Case of misunderstanding when u type petty I thought u ment pretty things about GK oh so thats why they dislike each other. Is it still the same between them to? In 94 they sang to oprah together I think she rote her book b4 that show.

  • Ree got sick of Natalie coppin her style. Jackson & Yancy were supposed to work for her 1st ,but Atlantic blocked it and they went lookin for a Ree sound-alike (with a famous name) to produce. Cole was the 1st princess-in-waiting to steal Ree's R&B grammy, press and worst of all:: SALES. Ree's voice was at it's peak when Nat came out but people were lookin for sumpin new. The title song to this Lp YOU was Aretha's killer remake of Natalie's

    but nobody heard it.

  • Oh so thats what the beef was about. When I read about that it wasn't much detail for me to understand there dislike for each other so it was over gaining more status.

  • I think the Roots book was after. David Nathan, the British Soul expert/critic, wrote a book about the Balck Diva gossip, but I never caught it. I did read in a promo interview that he thought Ree wasa the most petty.

There was a MAJOR Franklin/Cole feud but I never knew what was said/done. Now they act like best friends, but for years I'd see Nat do remakes of Ree's recordings but never mention her name.

  • Yeah cause as of late Nat came out with a rendition of Ree's daydreaming its a nice up beat timpo. Nat spoke highly of Ree in a t.v one special last year sometime. I geuss they reckansile.

  • As of late Nat came out with a rendition of Ree daydreaming it has a nice up beat timpo to it. Nat has spoken highly of Aretha in a t.v. one special last year sometime.

  • ree often mentions Dionne, Nancy Wilson, Patti , and C Khan as her comtemporary divas.

Ross and Cole gets slipped in her converstions more now too. Just read Re is hot cuz Hollywood aint cooperating with her Roots Movie/musical/TV movie. She lamblasted Hollywood in general, for not payin the Black Divas no mind!! Git down reee reee !

  • At a backstage interview Patt had mention ree and doinne those who waren't at the bet awards of 07. The last two t.v. celebration for Aretha had chaka there. The bet walk of fame in 2003 and a evening of stars tribute to Aretha. I wonder why patii, dionne and nancy wasn't there?

  • Why didn't Whoopi and Ree show For Big Orpah's fancy din din for the legendary AA women?

  • Honesty I don't,I was hopping u can tell me bout that cause I was looking for.

  • exactly i really wanted to see her sing changed with them

  • The best songstress! Get it Ree!!

  • This is why she is the undisputed Queen of Soul

  • The amazing thing about Aretha is that she takes her songs to church and you don't realize. Her amazing gospel piano chords are so great that you don't know if you should dance, boogie,or just say amen

  • Amen!

  • Go 'head, Ree!!!!

  • Aretha plays the piano just as well as she sings - a truly unique artist that future generations will admire. Thanks for posting -

  • NOBODY DOES NUTHIN AS WELL AS REE SINGS, not even her fingers playin on the box. But Sister DOES play!

  • This was a nice performance!

  • This woman can sing better than anyone who!!

  • totorrey, Welcome to the club, Aretha's world...lol

  • I've always liked Aretha although Whitney was my favorite and to mean in her own league, but after listening to Aretha's videos on youtube in comparison to Whitney's I know why this woman is a national treasure. She has the most wonderful voice I've ever heard. I'm just awe-struck by her limitless vocal capacity.

  • Awe-struck is a fitting word totorrey.

  • The same year as this video 79, Aretha was closing her shows with a tear jerkin Greatest Love Of All (speakin of nippy)

  • This was Aretha's "answer" to Natalie Cole's "This Will Be." I saw her perform "This...Be" at Carnegie Hall and Franklin OWNED it! That night, she also took David Ruffin's "Walk Away From Love," Mavis Staples' "Let's Do It Again," and claimed Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" as her own. Truly, she is a genius.

  • 1979 was the year of Aretha's VOICE, and the public unfortunately was not payin Ree much respect that year. I saw her sing this in LA right before the LA DIVA lp came out, and I remembered every word from the one performance. She did a Jacksons/Earth Wind and Fire Medley and then had the nerve to Shriek to God: a Better Version of "Sister Gets High" than on Sparkle. There was nothin left but the tears, when she closed with "The Greatest Love of All"

  • I completely understand. Today's "divas" don't compare. I wouldn't pay a penny to see any of them: no talent.

  • Does ANYone know where I can FIND this album anywhere? She RRRRROCKED "Mr. D.J."! OOOooowwweeeeEEE!

    C.J.

  • MR DJ IS ON you. THIS IS FROM la diva. NEITHER HAS EVER BEEN ON CD AND I THINK WE NEED A CIA/FBI INVESTIGATION TO FIND OUT WHY!!!

  • First time I've ever heard this song. Great song, great peformance. See Aretha is always better when she is both the muscian AND the singer.

  • Aretha can really work a piano...I love to hear when she goes for the high notes - She is a hard act to follow....The Queen ! ! ! !
