The soundtrack to the movie made the whole thing feel like some sort of satanic ritual. Like every time somebody died it was as if a sacrifice to appease some evil lord of madness. A seriously sinister soundtrack for an equally sinister movie
@ebos89 do you know what good music is? have you any clue what the word convergence means? could you possibly know what movie this is from and how well it fits in with the scene it's played in? do you even fucking know how amazingly well this piece was composed? they're SUPPOSED to go offbeat. it's supposed to sound somewhat bad. did you know that?
Once you've got your head around the structure, those last instruments introduced right at the end are monstrous. Has anyone worked out how vast the song would need to be for them to be in phase?
@okcomputeA dont forget Collin, hes one of the best bassists around, and its cool because he doesnt just do all the hard showing off funky bass stuff, hes really smooth and atmospheric and it just works so fucking well with their stuff
i loved this piece so much when i saw There Will Be Blood, then to find out it was actually composed by the lead guitarist from my favorite band... so fucking awesome.
I remember watching There will be Blood, when this part came on when he's running & covered in oil... I almost died... I've never loved a musical score so much
Even though this song was featured originally in the bodysong movie, it really owes its place to There will be blood, because the intense poly-rhythmic nature of the song coincides perfectly with the chaos of the drill tower blowout.
I had a Ford Mondeo that sounded just like that after it converged with a tree. I didn't get a government grant though. If it's any help guys, mine had a blocked injector but yours sounds like water in the tank. Hope you get it running again.
I thought this worked extremely well in There Will Be Blood. It seems ramshackle and elementary but serves to show the chaos Daniel Plainview was in and his conflicting feelings regarding safeguarding his son or attempting to save the oil rig, and essentially his business, from burning to a crisp.
I have yet to watch Bodysong, which is where this song is derived from. I had even heard this song before I saw "There will be Blood" and I loved it. The way each of the instruments has a simple rhythm, yet intertwine in an uncomfortably unusual way (complex and 'musically correct all the same') makes it a masterpeice. The fact that the beats compile slowly into what I believe resembles a heartbeat, puts the cherry on the mountain of ice cream, so to speak. Jonny Greenwood is astonishing.
@eon106 Don't be an ass, you've never seen There Will Be Blood, this song was great and the reason I like it is because I have seen the scene. You know, the oil derick explodes, burning oil shoots up into the air, and everyone is frantically running around to stop the well from shooting black sperm up into the air? Get what I am saying?
For everyone who doesn't get this, try to imagine it playing along with a really thrilling scene in a movie. Like someone trying to clean up a dead body before the cops bust down the door. That's what it's supposed to be like.
@marco00ve alas, it is much more complex than drum loops, but dont get me wrong, there is some kind of looping involved. Its basically derived from tape loops from stockhausen and around 60s n 70s. By itself it can b quite boring, but keep in mind THIS IS A MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.
@CloudArchitec well, you can definately tell somethings from some comments, even if what you see in them is off-topic:)
but if you look at it from the other side...everybodies opinion is worthless, if they don't do whatt they say what hey think, but that not nearly enough to cover it.
and no bodies opinion is worthfull, cause dead bodies don't speak, for themselves, at least,. well, actually they do, but people are having a hard time to hear it -> either too much noise or. too much silence ;)
still, i wonder how they recorded this? did they do it in lots of different takes or was it in one take with the whole group playing all the instruments, if so then they must be very well trained, i could never keep track of what i was playing with what's going on
love jonny greenwood though, one of the best musicians around nowadays
@jgorine Actually it was in There Will Be Blood. I guess it's in both. It's not listed on the There Will Be Blood soundtrack, but it's definitely in the movie.
I think he had each instrument play individually, each at a slightly different tempo.. and he positioned the tracks so that they would all converge at the end.
I does have a beat, but then the adding of beats disrupt the main beat, yet doesn't completely distract. With all of this you are listening 4-5 songs with different timing at the same time.
this shit is crazy son; but it shows his knowledge of music and sounds and his openess to using a broader range of instruments.....if that makes sense
people may not like this song, but it gets everyone's attention. I couldn't bring myself to pause this...just because the music is abstract and unconventional, doesn't mean it isn't AMAZING. Obviously he is paying homage to the importance of the very rudimentary principles of music-making...
I'm glad you're here to tell everyone what music is and isn't. You must be god or something. Why isn't your name widely recognised in the music world?oh wait that's right, you're a nobody and your opinion is worthless, now I remember. It's jsut worth this comment, and even that's generous.
@commanex I don't have the arrogance to say that you opinion is worthless, however I completely disagree. This is a layered rhythmic composition where the parts are constantly speeding up at different rates and moving in and out of synchronization with each other to create a busy, chaotic atmosphere with immense sonic depth. If that's so easy to do, I look forward to your next album.
Fassin Taaak, your argument sucks because all music that has ever been made, comes from simple sounds children could make whether a child is playing a piano or tapping on something. This is original and it goes along with the movie where it was used to perfectly depict the scene. You know nothing about music. Go study. Also this isnt his only song and not all of them use such simple instruments......
If some kids at a community centre in some deprived area created this sound nobody would think anything else other than how shit and pathetic their attempt at music turned out, but in the right context and with the right name attached to it, then it becomes something special and something that can be appreciated!
Don't any of you who posted a 5 star rating have any doubts as to whether or not it deserves 5 stars? Didn't you think of what I just said before voting?
As much as I disagree with you about the quality of this song, I must agree with what you said about kids on the street or something playing this.
Most people would pay it no mind.
Actually, there was a study of this topic done once, where a professional violinist was playing a violin worth millions of dollars on the street, dressed like a street-musician. It was a performance people would usually pay a lot of money for, but he was treated as a street-man. Children seemed interested, though.
haha. You are right. I don't have a clue about my own opinion. Maybe I should listen to some guy who goes and critiques people's comments on obscure videos.
haha. taste in music is an opinion. Just because you find it brilliant doesn't mean it is. Just like how if i think its brilliant, it doesn't mean you will. Normally you only have to explain this concept to children... You don't have to agree with me, but you might as well do yourself some good and not choose to show the world how simple minded you are.
Ladies and gentlemen of this bulletin board...CrippledRetardo has personally messaged me and said that he has a boil on his ass and is offering me to watch him pop it...
what does the people say? do i watch him pop it? or do i not? personally, i would not mind it at ALL if we can record it with his full name and post it on youtube.
Ok, to begin, I love Radiohead. To continue, I admire Johnny's ways of manipulating computers and sounds...fucking amazing. BUT! and YET! i cannot understand this fucking mess of sounds!!!! I know its considered the "Art of noise", as it is known in music, but pleaaaase! Stop taking advantage of your own fame!
it's a fantfuckingtastic convergence of fucking mind blowing beats that fucking speed up at such a fucking perfect rate that draws your fucking soul in and then fucking explodes your fucking eardrums with a fantfuckingtastic finale

haha. taste in music is an opinion. Just because you find it brilliant doesn't mean it is. Just like how if i think its brilliant, it doesn't mean you will. Normally you only have to explain this concept to children... You don't have to agree with me, but you might as well do yourself some good and not choose to show the world how simple minded you are.

I know its considered the "Art of noise", as it is known in music, but pleaaaase! Stop taking advantage of your own fame!
