It is best if you can make a good friend that knows how to properly troubleshoot and fix problems on both linux _and_ windows boxes. If they are familiar with a linux environment then chances are they understand the architecture of the hardware and software on a system better than your average joe. What this means for you is that they will be able to isolate issues quicker because they have a feel for the deeper, inner (generally unseen), workings of a computer. Computer Science FTW! :-P

As a guy and a computer science major I must say that the reason we answer girls questions in that way is because most girl we talk to never use computers out side of the super simple. So if we take it too fast they get confused and we tend to have to go back to the beginning and as such we answer like you are a 3 year old.
