I always think of some poor sailor tossed about in the dark on the sea, hearing the forecast and knowing that good skies or worse weather were coming his way, and then the National Anthem knowing that he couldn't, after all, be far from England's safe shores. And his family worried about him out there in the heaving blackness, knowing that just a little of their lives was being sent out over the vast and stormy spaces to to call him home.
I love this :) its sounds to snuggle up to on a dark rainy night and it makes you feel comforted and safe... I am off to sleep in no time :) thanks for posting it.
Beautiful. Well and truly beautiful. “A peaceful night, goodnight”. Almost brought a tear to me eye. I’m feeling really happy and sentimental about Great Britain once again. Thanks for posting.
@Trek001 No... that would be the Radio 4 Morning Theme that "we" used to Jump to attention to .... since they stop broadcasting that the whole country has gone to the dogs....
@Trek001 Sailing Away makes me feel much more proud to be British than God Save the Queen does. Instead of a national anthem, we should just hum Sailing Away and then read the shipping forecast in unison at international sporting events.
Nothing more comforting or reassuring than BBC Radio 4/World Service, one of the little things that make me smile about the BBC, those traditions they refuse to let go of.
This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle,This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot.. this earth,...this realm...........this England!!!

Ahh, the dulcet tones of Annie Mckie.... Some years ago she used to be the news reader at BBC Bristol, before joining BBC Radio 4.
