@CornCob6000 Ah fair dues, he did know what he was doing. This was his defining moment as a footballer. When he picked up the ball, he just went for it, and found that little bit extra he needed to take him all the way. That's what the World Cup is all about, ( or should be!) :-)

@fabunova It's a great goal, I'm not taking anything away from that. The only thing that gets me is that it was voted in the top ten all-time world cup goals. As you say, the guy just went for it, and got through. I'd still say that it is more luck than judgement though. Players like Maradona, Cruyff, Muller and so on could consistently do what they did. If this guy was known for his solo goals, then there would be actual skill involved. If this is the only time he did it, then it's 99% luck :-)

@CornCob6000 I know what you mean about needing to consistently perform, in order to be acknowledged as truly great, and I agree with that. One of the things which is increasingly concerning me abut the contemporary game, is this "play safe" mentality, which is threatening the instinctive, spontaneous aspect of football. As an enthusiast of real football ( and obviously you are one as well), I would still treasure goals such as this. even if they are a "one off" for the player concerned.

@fabunova You're right, and my original comment was more intended in fun than seriously criticising, it's a great goal. :-) I completely agree about modern football, but I don't think it will change while the stakes are so high. For example, in the latter stages of the Champions Cup, every single pass can make or break you. I always think that, like so many other things in life, you can guarantee a steady standard of consistency, but to go for something special, you must take risks. :-)

Contender's include Carlos Alberto (1970 final), A Gemmill (v Holl1978), Eder (v USSR 1982), M Laudrup ( v Uruguay 1986 ), Maradona '86 v Eng, R Baggio v Czech 1990, Stojkovic ( v Spn 1990), Matthaus ( v Yug 1990),Dumitrescu ( v Arg 1994), Bergcamp ( v Arg 98), Owen ( v Arg 98) Cuevas ( v Slvna 2002), M Rodriquez ( v Mex 2006 ), D Villa ( v Hond 2010) Just an initial selection mind! :-)

@CornCob6000 I meant David Villa's first goal against Honduras in 2010, as he scored both goals in that game! Also, I have to mention Josimar ( v Poland 1986), Belanov ( v Belgium 1986 ), Cruyff ( v Arg 1974 ), Tardelli ( 1982 Final), and Forlan ( v Germany 2010 ). Choosing one personal favourite from these would be quite a task! :-)
