There sits Muggeridge, one of the most brilliant minds of the last century, defending Christianity. And you poor soul, not even capable of spelling the word "religious" correctly, think you can mock him and his convictions and babble out nonsense about something true not being true anymore because of the passing of a certain amount of years.
This is so shockingly bizarre, I don´t know whether I should laugh out loud or weep about it.
BBC Four's Holy Flying Circus is well worth watching. an original re-imagining on the lead up and aftermarth of the BBC debate. the actor's that play Palin and Jones are very convincing ..if you ever wanted to see Michael Palin and John Cleese fight it out in a Jedi style i advice you to watch this .
@Kujiranoai I can't argue with that statement. I don't have much time for religion and the arguments made against the film here are totally without base, but Stockwood was generally a good man (even though he appears very cocky in this) who helped to bring many positions of the Anglican Church into the twentieth century.
I don't care for religion. No doubt that Jesus had some good points about how to treat each other right, but my main problem are all the relious hocus pocus. Today that is not nessesary. You can actually be treating other people well, without being relious, so why not cut the bull about a god.
BTW I also hate those religious peoples "taboos". You ask a religious person about something, and you will get an answer that was true 2000 years ago.
"Life of Brian" - one of the pinnacles of film history. This interview is one of the pinnacles of British broadcasting history. I have the film. When will the BBC release this interview?!!!!
Well, in retrospect "Life of Brian" has gone through almost two generations of viewers and is as popular as ever. The two old assholes debating against it, is both dead and have been for long time.
Thats the good thing about old people with old outdated ideas and values.
I'm a catholic and i think it's fucking hilarious.
They are ridiculing the follower in Judea at the time not Christ himself. In my opinion Christ is sitting up there having a good laugh at the film himself. "Lowest form of art" my arse. The Church would benefit more if these conservative old buggers kept their mouths shut. It's a joke, good humour.

@JanineRobin Oh golly, 5 months ago and still no debate uploaded. Please don't tell me you died or something because that video is of the highest importance.
@mainsqueeze1977 It wasn't an arguement actually - I mean, if you want to go into that then I happily will but actually I was merely expressing my opinion on what the voiceover had said which I agree with a lot. Do you want to get the thought police on me?
I wasn't referring to your comment but the line on which you commented. No, Brian was not meant to be Jesus by the Pythons but simply saying "Brian is spelled differently" is really dumb thinking. Of course, as much as I enjoy the film (as a Christian), the Pythons set out to offend and repeatedly say so that they were poking fun at Christ. Strange how one first wants to be provocative and then complains about the backlash.
@mainsqueeze1977 Eddie Izzard (the voiceover) is a comedian and is paid to say funny things - he's an educated man and could have given you a very serious arguement if he wanted to. And the Pythons didn't set out to offend people that is a very ignorant thing to say - offense is taken not given.
And offence can also be expected. And not just Christians - having crucified people sing such a happy song is indeed something. Would you be as nonchalants if they were whistling while marching to the gas chambers?
Still, the film is a funny and entertaining one - just don't pretend that the fuss is everybody's fault but the Pythons.
@mainsqueeze1977 Listen, I'm not saying that SOME people were offended by this but a large percentage of those people won't even have watched the film. Anyway, I still say that what ever the backlash was, the idea behind the movie was not a malicious or hateful, in fact it was nowhere near as spiteful as most of the comments made by their opposition in the TV Debate. I think the fuss is everybody's fault but the Pythons just as strongly as you don't. What can I say, that's opinions for you.

In GB it is against the law to criticize religion. Ireland just passed a law against blasphemy. Other Euro countries have similar laws. This was done because muslims demanded it. Christians have not demanded such things for many many centuries. Yet, have any of these self righteous people spoken up about the infringement of freedom of speech? You can see from Palin's face how pleased he is with himself. Oh, I am so brilliant. I insult christians. I am so brave. Liberals are terrible hypocrites.
Yes it is. It's also easy to dismiss because of that but that doesn't add or take away from the possibility of the reality in the statement.
I don't say stuff for effect. I say what I mean. Why would I be afraid of debating anybody on religion? I don't have to make anything up. I have logic on my side. There's nothing to fear. I 100% gaurantee you I would take on anybody.
ok i really do not care to hear your opinion on this debate and im not going to start anything by telling you mind But Its easy to say how tuff you are to someone you'll never meet and if u did u wouldnt know thats its biden1 or esmereld so yea theres nothing to fear when your sayin that over youtube
Yeh cheers. I've looked everywhere for it as well. Considering the fact its supposed to be "infamous", its impossible to find anywhere!! I've only ever seen bits of it on various documentaries.
What a posh fool Malcolm Muggeridge was. I remember a television interview in which he was advocating the minimalisation of power. A few years later he converted to Roman Catholicism!
His cheap journalistic books about Jesus were beststellers when they first came out but who reads them today? This guy had no brains at all.
Great respect for Cleese and Palin. They seem so civilized compared to that old queen in the purple dress 1:10
some people dont have a sense of humour when watching this. That's probably why a big debate starts up between non believers and believers. Tis a skit that's it is all

Do you really think gentlemen wouldn't consent to marry a young woman merely because she's thoughtfully patriotic and favors a virtuous ethno-culture?
Or are you maybe thinking of the sexual ethno-culture of Leftist degenerates, much influenced by foreigners?
Hi Georock, Um...why would anyone 'wannabe' an intellectual ? Too much pretension, semi-fraudulent credentialism, and usually lower-calibre thinking than 'common sense' folks.
Too many sectors of your economy are based on such rubbish.
And when you say 'better a leftist degenerate...' you don't have to remain either, much less both.
The thing is in the real interview the bishops confessed they hadnt actually seen the film. They call it corrupt? The catholic church calling monty python corrupt? My god, even Jesus would laugh at that.
I see what you are saying. However dont resign yourself to a position of negativity. When the ships are down (and a time may come in your life when they are), you will hopefully find a deep spiritual experience. This is what happened to me and i know (not just hope or believe) that I was protected. I have never considered it important to 'pikc the right religeon'. I dont know wny so many religeous people get caught up with this.
ps: I am an absurdist also at times. I like your style. Cheers
then where the fuck is he. hiding? oh i have a good point, if hes so far away what makes you think he can see you. if he cant see you he cant judge you and then nobody can get into heaven.OR maybe he left along time ago because he doesn't give a flying shit what the fuck happens to humanity.
When you say you have a good point, did you actually mean you didn't have a point. Vague 'maybes' aren't a cohesive argument.
And you can only prove that something does exist, not that something doesn't. Stop attacking other people's faith because you don't share their beliefs.
and you tell me to stop attacking peoples beliefs but for since the beggining of man religous assholes have tortured and murdered people by the billions because they didn't belive what they belived and today they act as if theyve done nothing wrong when you attack there beliefs.
How do you know that there is no heaven in space? Space is vast and incomprehensible. Which, by the way, according to the christians, God is supposed to be. Incomprehensible. Which means people will try to comprehend in their own ways, with their limited imagination.
It is indeed true that religions have persecuted one another for thousands of years, but that was due to the personnel of the time, not the religion. Did modern christians torture anyone who wasn't?
Besides, you are attacking the beliefs, not the fact that people have commited atrocities in the name of the religion. If I believe in God, does that make me personally responsible for the spanish inquisition?
Did modern Christians torture anyone who wasn't? oh no there have been no wars because of religion nor torturing in the modern area* cough cough** 9/11 Guantanamo bay, or even smaller events like that girl who got stoned to death this year because she was accused of marrying someone of the other religion.
religious people are still assholes and always be that way
Ah yes of course you are right. All religious people are assholes. That Ghandi guy, what a dick. And Mother Theresa was a complete bitch.
And Guantanamo Bay was definitely all about religion and not terrorism.
At the end of the day, there will always be idiots who pick on any damn thing as a reason to persecute others, but it does not mean it is explicitly religion that causes it. Oh and talking of persecution...what exactly is it you're doing?
all religious people are assholes.ghandi was a racist and mother theresa got joy from watching poor people suffer.
and guantanamo bay is defently all about religion. they do not need a reason to throw anybody in there, all they need to do is know there muslim and they hate america, and bam waterboarded. and yes im persecuting relegoin because it has been responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths both in the pas and today.prick
Evidently you are some undiscovered genius to be able to see so clearly through what are, admittedly, some very cunning disguises. Undoubtedly Ghandi was a racist. Undoubtedly Mother Theresa, that allegedly great helper for the poor, sick, and dying, was just using it as a cover story to witness pain in a sadistic way.
Clearly you have your head so far up your own ass that you can only see your own shit.
Do you even understand the definition of persecute?
Clearly not, because it doesn't tend to be used in a positive fashion. Opression would usually be used in a definition. I realise that you are just trying to rile me, to get me annoyed, but all you are doing is increasingly amusing me. I am laughing at you because of your poorly worded, shameful attempts at bigotry. Trying to gain the moral high ground by citing some made up examples doesn't help. Especially when you countermand it with an immature insult.
first of i am not your friend you clearly have no friends. and lost? lost what. lost my interest in this conversation perhaps. let me repeat my last carefully reason argument. suck my balls
lol Ghandi was a massive racist and Mother Tehresa used vast amounts of money to create her own charities of which would make her a millionaire, in which she formed her own branch of church which was nearer to Opus Dei, she was in fact not highly regarded by the catholic church because of this...learn some history you dumbass lol
If Mother Theresa was no highly regarded by the Catholic Church, then why was she Beatified? Would seem an odd way of showing disapproval.
And Ghandi wasn't racist. Early on in life, he made certain statements that could be interpreted as Racist, and even possibly were, but as he aged he became more enlightened after influenced by other Indians that worked on sugar plantations (giving him more perspective).
I didn't say officially, officially she was praised for her 'charity work' because quite frankly she had a good image and was a useful spokesperson for spiritual enrichment, a false totem upon which peoples faith would be strengthened.
however you have me with ghandi, I did not know the man in his later years personally. But I judge people by their actions, people can change I admit that, but most retain their hatred and learn to hide it very well.
she was not highly regarded? she has been beatified by the pope. they are waiting on one more miracle, and bam...she's a saint. what do you mean, "not highly regarded?"
and what is your evidence that gandhi was a "massive racist?"
"And you can only prove that something does exist, not that something doesn't."
i don't know if that's true. i think it would depend on your definition of exists, but i can prove lots of things don't exist. begging the querstion? perhaps, but if i destroy something in front of you, say burn a piece of paper, i just proved to you that the paper doesn't exist (after it is burned).
not necessarily, you could of only burned my perception of said paper. It's existence was in question before anything happened to it.
but like you said, thats your own notion of existence that needs to be discussed, frankly I would get into a Philosophical/theological debate, but I'm hungry and grow weary of this argument that will never be solved.
Tom123collins - Yes they would be so easily offended. It's written into their religion, the idea of a non believer knocking their beliefs. They have to carry all that emotional baggage and we are free to walk around, bound to get them all a bit riled up. Especially when they are doing it all on "faith".....
And do you not have 'faith'? On anything? 'Faith' by definition means that which is beyond proof or evidence. The evidence may exist in our heart, our sense of right or wrong. Be careful about criticising what you don't understand.
Its always easy to knock others and Christians have the right, believe it or not, to stand up for themselves, just as you do.
Their idiocy and pomposity shines through without question, OR reason. The film is clearly NOT about jesus christ, and yet the seem to cling to the fact that it is so.
Not suggesting it isnt playing on Faiths, but if anything, The Life Of Brian is about Followers of religion, and how they will do just that nomatter what it is their following.
thats what I love about it, the beautiful parallel between the film and the aftermath.
Well said. I agree with you. And I think its a great film. Humour is so important in our lives. Christians are an easy target in an apathetic unprincipled society and I believe its this that led some people to feel under attack.
I wouldn't say i have faith and what little faith i do have in people for example has to be re-affirmed one way or another with proof. Please don't now tell me that faith is some kind of noble pursuit above others like knowing for example. Christians can do what they like. My comment did not deny them that right, but i will remind them at every point that their opinions are not particularly special or worth special attention/merit/respect.
Monterey2am - Your quote "Be careful about criticising what you don't understand." Why? in case the space daddy gets me? It's seems your are presuming i do not understand what drives people to religion and the subsequent nonsense that then comes out of it. Sorry, but i won't be careful. Like i said, religious belief is not special, it deserves no special respect OR consideration of that nature.
Mattyabseley - Dude! You sound like a pessimist. Are you? Don't be one of those 'atheist fundamentalists' with a profound lack of joy in your heart. Life is too short for that and you are probably too wise. May we all lighten up, including me.

Liberals are terrible hypocrites.

theres always one line I'm going to remember from this debate.
A few people, up on a cross, singing a musical song.
It was something like that. The musical song thing was hilarious.

That song has been a great inspiration too many people.
it is even popular at funerals in some places.

Do you really think gentlemen wouldn't consent to marry a young woman merely because she's thoughtfully patriotic and favors a virtuous ethno-culture?
Or are you maybe thinking of the sexual ethno-culture of Leftist degenerates, much influenced by foreigners?
ProNorden 2 years ago
Better a leftist degenerate than a wannabe intellectual like you.
georock123 2 years ago 6
Hi Georock, Um...why would anyone 'wannabe' an intellectual ? Too much pretension, semi-fraudulent credentialism, and usually lower-calibre thinking than 'common sense' folks.
Too many sectors of your economy are based on such rubbish.
And when you say 'better a leftist degenerate...' you don't have to remain either, much less both.

You can take your pick as for reasons why - 'emotional investment', 'desperation'.
Essentially, your education is your capacity for reason and how easily convinced you are is your willingness to USE your reason.

God created the universe. Do you really think He would be there?
Samalamalamdam 2 years ago
then where the fuck is he. hiding? oh i have a good point, if hes so far away what makes you think he can see you. if he cant see you he cant judge you and then nobody can get into heaven.OR maybe he left along time ago because he doesn't give a flying shit what the fuck happens to humanity.
anestheticroses 2 years ago
When you say you have a good point, did you actually mean you didn't have a point. Vague 'maybes' aren't a cohesive argument.
And you can only prove that something does exist, not that something doesn't. Stop attacking other people's faith because you don't share their beliefs.
tuxedofilm 2 years ago
i was simply stating that christians belive that there is heaven above the skys but there is only space. so no heaven.
anestheticroses 2 years ago
and you tell me to stop attacking peoples beliefs but for since the beggining of man religous assholes have tortured and murdered people by the billions because they didn't belive what they belived and today they act as if theyve done nothing wrong when you attack there beliefs.
anestheticroses 2 years ago
How do you know that there is no heaven in space? Space is vast and incomprehensible. Which, by the way, according to the christians, God is supposed to be. Incomprehensible. Which means people will try to comprehend in their own ways, with their limited imagination.
It is indeed true that religions have persecuted one another for thousands of years, but that was due to the personnel of the time, not the religion. Did modern christians torture anyone who wasn't?
tuxedofilm 2 years ago
Besides, you are attacking the beliefs, not the fact that people have commited atrocities in the name of the religion. If I believe in God, does that make me personally responsible for the spanish inquisition?
tuxedofilm 2 years ago
no it makes you an asshole
anestheticroses 2 years ago
Did modern Christians torture anyone who wasn't? oh no there have been no wars because of religion nor torturing in the modern area* cough cough** 9/11 Guantanamo bay, or even smaller events like that girl who got stoned to death this year because she was accused of marrying someone of the other religion.
religious people are still assholes and always be that way
anestheticroses 2 years ago
Ah yes of course you are right. All religious people are assholes. That Ghandi guy, what a dick. And Mother Theresa was a complete bitch.
And Guantanamo Bay was definitely all about religion and not terrorism.
At the end of the day, there will always be idiots who pick on any damn thing as a reason to persecute others, but it does not mean it is explicitly religion that causes it. Oh and talking of persecution...what exactly is it you're doing?
tuxedofilm 2 years ago
all religious people are assholes.ghandi was a racist and mother theresa got joy from watching poor people suffer.
and guantanamo bay is defently all about religion. they do not need a reason to throw anybody in there, all they need to do is know there muslim and they hate america, and bam waterboarded. and yes im persecuting relegoin because it has been responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths both in the pas and today.prick
anestheticroses 2 years ago
Evidently you are some undiscovered genius to be able to see so clearly through what are, admittedly, some very cunning disguises. Undoubtedly Ghandi was a racist. Undoubtedly Mother Theresa, that allegedly great helper for the poor, sick, and dying, was just using it as a cover story to witness pain in a sadistic way.
Clearly you have your head so far up your own ass that you can only see your own shit.
Do you even understand the definition of persecute?
tuxedofilm 2 years ago
Clearly not, because it doesn't tend to be used in a positive fashion. Opression would usually be used in a definition. I realise that you are just trying to rile me, to get me annoyed, but all you are doing is increasingly amusing me. I am laughing at you because of your poorly worded, shameful attempts at bigotry. Trying to gain the moral high ground by citing some made up examples doesn't help. Especially when you countermand it with an immature insult.

Oh and it's spelt anaesthetic. It's our language. Use it properly, chum.

tuxedofilm 2 years ago
first of i am not your friend you clearly have no friends. and lost? lost what. lost my interest in this conversation perhaps. let me repeat my last carefully reason argument. suck my balls
anestheticroses 2 years ago
lol Ghandi was a massive racist and Mother Tehresa used vast amounts of money to create her own charities of which would make her a millionaire, in which she formed her own branch of church which was nearer to Opus Dei, she was in fact not highly regarded by the catholic church because of this...learn some history you dumbass lol
Potellion 2 years ago
If Mother Theresa was no highly regarded by the Catholic Church, then why was she Beatified? Would seem an odd way of showing disapproval.
And Ghandi wasn't racist. Early on in life, he made certain statements that could be interpreted as Racist, and even possibly were, but as he aged he became more enlightened after influenced by other Indians that worked on sugar plantations (giving him more perspective).
tuxedofilm 2 years ago
I didn't say officially, officially she was praised for her 'charity work' because quite frankly she had a good image and was a useful spokesperson for spiritual enrichment, a false totem upon which peoples faith would be strengthened.
however you have me with ghandi, I did not know the man in his later years personally. But I judge people by their actions, people can change I admit that, but most retain their hatred and learn to hide it very well.
Potellion 2 years ago
she was not highly regarded? she has been beatified by the pope. they are waiting on one more miracle, and bam...she's a saint. what do you mean, "not highly regarded?"
and what is your evidence that gandhi was a "massive racist?"
watty024 2 years ago
"And you can only prove that something does exist, not that something doesn't."
i don't know if that's true. i think it would depend on your definition of exists, but i can prove lots of things don't exist. begging the querstion? perhaps, but if i destroy something in front of you, say burn a piece of paper, i just proved to you that the paper doesn't exist (after it is burned).
watty024 2 years ago
not necessarily, you could of only burned my perception of said paper. It's existence was in question before anything happened to it.
but like you said, thats your own notion of existence that needs to be discussed, frankly I would get into a Philosophical/theological debate, but I'm hungry and grow weary of this argument that will never be solved.

If religious people are really so confident in their beliefs, they wouldn't be so easily offended.
Tom123collins 2 years ago 2
Tom123collins - Yes they would be so easily offended. It's written into their religion, the idea of a non believer knocking their beliefs. They have to carry all that emotional baggage and we are free to walk around, bound to get them all a bit riled up. Especially when they are doing it all on "faith".....
mattyabsley 2 years ago
And do you not have 'faith'? On anything? 'Faith' by definition means that which is beyond proof or evidence. The evidence may exist in our heart, our sense of right or wrong. Be careful about criticising what you don't understand.
Its always easy to knock others and Christians have the right, believe it or not, to stand up for themselves, just as you do.
Monterey2am 2 years ago
This is true. But not in this case.
Greastest story ever told
KillAllCops 2 years ago
Well said. I agree with you. And I think its a great film. Humour is so important in our lives. Christians are an easy target in an apathetic unprincipled society and I believe its this that led some people to feel under attack.
Monterey2am 2 years ago
I wouldn't say i have faith and what little faith i do have in people for example has to be re-affirmed one way or another with proof. Please don't now tell me that faith is some kind of noble pursuit above others like knowing for example. Christians can do what they like. My comment did not deny them that right, but i will remind them at every point that their opinions are not particularly special or worth special attention/merit/respect.
mattyabsley 2 years ago
Monterey2am - Your quote "Be careful about criticising what you don't understand." Why? in case the space daddy gets me? It's seems your are presuming i do not understand what drives people to religion and the subsequent nonsense that then comes out of it. Sorry, but i won't be careful. Like i said, religious belief is not special, it deserves no special respect OR consideration of that nature.
mattyabsley 2 years ago 6
Mattyabseley - Dude! You sound like a pessimist. Are you? Don't be one of those 'atheist fundamentalists' with a profound lack of joy in your heart. Life is too short for that and you are probably too wise. May we all lighten up, including me.
