I am a Chamorro native from Saipan. There is a story of one Japanese man who helped his wife and kids jump from one of the cliffs. Then, as he was about to jump himself, the Americans captured him. When the man realized that the Americans were not the monsters that they thought they were, the man was devastated as he had lost his entire family because of that rumor.

there we go...thought i could have a serious donut conversation but looks like i met another 12 year old who is gay got a small dick has no life is fake and what else stereotype internet insult I WAS JUST EATING A DONUT MAN:)
The "fight to the death" conduct of the Japanese soldiers and the suicidal behavior of the civilian population on Saipan was one of the factors that convinced President Truman that the A-bomb had to be used. This was only reinforced by the subsequent battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Had we been forced to invade the Home Islands, the casualties on both sides would have been horrific. Although the A-bombs were terrible, I believe that the alternative would have been worse for both sides.
@Seaclam67 1 . Siding with a powerful nation like Germany who has advanced technology was a wise move back then, they didn't look whether they were sadistic or not. 2 . In those days people from both sides help pride and confidence to their own countries, propaganda made them stronger and more blind.
3. The Japanese made specific torpedoes capable to dive in shallow water and it was a success.
@lapatrole: Pearl Harbor was a complete disaster for Japan. If you are going to attack ships, you attack them in deep water. Yamamoto knew he had made a collosal mistake. Whether or not he made the comment of waking a sleeping giant, that's exactly what Japan did. The shallow water water topedoes mean nothing, they simply were a opening salvo instrument to Japan's loss.
@Seaclam67 no , Peal Harbor was a successful attack, they inflicted heavy damage plus it wasn't Yamato's fault, it is to blame Tojo, plus the Japanese didn't have other targets than the Americans on Pearl Harbor that cut off Japan's supply lines because they waged war in Indochina and China.
@lapatrole: Pearl Harbor was successful at one thing and one thing only. To piss off the American public. Japan did a great job at that. I don't think you realize that if Japan had decided to go for the west coast and attack in mass, not only would they have lost a protracted battle, but the utter rage from Americans seeing their home soil attacked would have lead to reprisals that would have eliminated Japan permantely. You have no idea how lucky Japan was in their stupid attack on Pearl.
@Seaclam67 America cut of Japan's supply line because they were having their OWN colonial war in Indochina.. Japan might had in mind expansion, but they also did for the economic good of Asia.. If China wouldn't have retaliated, Japan could have helped them diplomatically but no, they fired at Japan first in Manchuria, same for the Koreans. Japan wanted to clear out Asia and the islands in the Pacific from the exploiting Western colonizers.
@Seaclam67 Plus the Japanese weren't lucky because they ate two unnecessary A-bombs. Emperor Hirohito knew he had no more offensive plans so he was to surrender and even more, Russia just declared war on Japan in 1945 just before the surrender. America knew that too, but still dropped the two A-bombs to Japan to show their "american super-power" to Russia. Japan was used as bait so don't tell me Japan was "lucky" cause America dropped the A-bombs.
@lapatrole: Oh please spare us your nonsense. Japan was working on their won bomb, they even where fooling around sending balloons over with bombs and germ warfare. Their treatment of POW's, the death marches, the infamous UNIT 731. Don't even go there. Japan got lucky they were not obliterated off the face of the planet. They made the call to side with Hitler and his evil, sadistic henchmen. Don't give me this, well they had the leading technology BS.
@Seaclam67 war is war and we do everything to win it. They were smart enough to send bombs and research germ warfare. Prisoners are used for experimentation, POW are baits. The Japanese may had advanced technology but they lack of resources so they couldn't win the war. They made what they could to reach their goals and they fought with bravery and honor. Plus what i said about Russia wasn't BS, if America would have obliterated Japan off the face of the planet, that would have been genocide
Pearl Harbor was MOSTLY successful not a total. Indeed they sank/damaged many of our warships, but only 3 battleships (Utah, Oklahoma, and Arizona) could not be raised or repaired, the rest were, plus the Japanese failed to sink our aircraft carriers because they did not launch a 3rd wave due to the fear of American submarines. Had the Japanese launched a 3rd wave, they would have caught our carriers and our naval power in the Pacific would have been decimated, but they didn't.
@histnerd777 Somewhat incorrect. The third wave would not have caught any carriers, they were no where near Pearl at the time. What the third wave could have done is destroyed all drydocks and fuel storage, that would have delayed repairs etc.
The US was quite fortunate as the Japanese could have taken Hawaii, and then made its way to the US. If they had thought about it they could have inflicted extreme terror on the US at home. Lucky for the US they did not do this or the war would have taken a lot longer to win. I have always said the war would have gone 10 years if the Japanese had hit the US on the west coast. It was the Japanese' thinking they were superior that lead to their mistake here. Good for us not them.
@aleemiles too bad japan didnt. Japan is a country with the lowest crime rate, they leave their bikes just in front of their homes, they are extremly polite, they give lost wallets back, they have the cleanest streets- I was there and move there in october ;)
@DanWproductions, after losing the war the Japanese mentality went through a change that was quite radical for them. The emperor was no longer viewed as a god and their loyalty and pride was more humble than extreme. Yes, their work ethic became even better and they are a law to themselves. Their attributes became more refined. I hope you continue to enjoy Japan. I heard prices are very high - a friend said a water melon cost her $25, ouch. All the best.
Besides not mentioning Guy Gabaldon that failed to say that the Commander of the Imperial Carrier Battle Group that attacked Pearl Harbor committed Suicide on Saipan Admiral Chuichi Nagumo.
@tss77 good point. He saved lives and was worried about reprimands not following orders. He named his son after Jeffrey Hunter who portrayed him in "Hell to Eternity". Guy passed away about a year and a half ago and surprisingly in today's media, there was a column in the obituaries of his service.
@jessicafischerqueen I have great regard for the brave American Soldiers but what you have said is not right.....Please do not invoke the Good Lord whilst making such statements.

@1stUSMarine, my grandfather lost an eye in Africa. He was a dispatch rider and as he past a truck it hit a land mine and blew him off his bike. He woke up in hospital and they told him the soldiers on the truck all died. My other grandfather was an ammunitions expert and was on bomb disposal in England. He never wore protection as he said he did not want his wife identifying his head still in his helmut. A lot of people did what they could for all of us. Thank you all.
She threw her baby over a cliff for fear of being killed?... OK I don't understand it but it must have made sense to them so I won't judge it too strongly.
@WheelchairPerson she threw her baby off the cliff out of fear of torture for her and her baby, you shouldnt question fear lad, fear can make you do alot of things, trust me, if you were afraid of someone as strongly as the civilians on saipan were you would do the same if you thought that death was the only way to go, with the allies help, or your own. they were brainwashed to believe the US troops would kill them horribly or torture them horribly, dont think badly of them for what they did.
@kornek21 No I don't. I did say it must have made sense to them, and I didn't judge them atall. It is a shocking thing to witness, and even harder to understand at first glance. If I was there it would be different of course, I would have done it faster probably. I don't know what it's like to be scared for my life.

Japan sided with an evil, sadistic leader and his henchmen who where nothing short of the devil incarnate. That statement says it all right there.
Seaclam67 1 year ago
WTF was Japan thinking. I mean they are a fine people, but their leaders lead them down a path that was insane. Three huge mistakes:
1. To side with the sadistic Nazi's. For a culture so heavily based in diginity and honor, where was was it when they made that call.
2. To even think about attacking a much larger country with an astromonically bigger industrial base and work force.
3. To attack Pearl Harbor, a shallow water port, where stricken ships were raised and repaired.
