  • Let us gather and create a 'Loners' Group =)

  • The honking melody of rock and roll music has a clearly defined ancestry in jazz going back to Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith of 85 years ago. Bessie Smith was ahead of her time.

  • This was real music (:

  • Great song a true classic!

  • Just the way I feel,

I've known of people who cheated and has been forgiven

I've known of people who doesn't love, but still someone's always loving them

And I just don't know how I've been acused as a stalker when I only was asking to be loved, I only was looking for you to love me to need me as much as I do, I know I made mistakes that were huge, but they're not as big as a cheat, and still don't know why I don't deserve a chance to prove you I can change and be a better lover.

  • :(

  • i ain't got nobody..

  • Yup. Bessie, me too. Me too. I'm always alone..how about me and you hang out and jam?

  • @PunkRockFreak09 lol. i wanna join too. haha =( =)

  • You and me both Bessie..

  • is it a "cover" of marrion harris' song from 1916?

  • louis prima covered this song!

  • David Lee Roth

  • Been having sexual fantasies about Bessie Smith since the age of 13.

  • GOD DAMN THIS IS PERFECT!

  • And the worst part is, she probably wouldn't make it past the first round of American Idol. What is this world coming to?

  • Was this really recorded back in 1925? wow...always loved this song (from the louis prima version) but didn't know about this rendition, thanks for posting

  • She sang her heart out. Very direct with no warbley trills and frills to impede communication. So great. So direct.

  • thanks so much for these songs; always read about her, but couldnt enjoy the music until now...knowing more of my heritage is greatly appreciated!

  • Boopsy Boopsy Bop

    Zitty Bop!

  • Not a very flattering image by the way.

  • @Mullahgrrl How so?

  • @sonicscreamingblue She looks like miss piggy on a bad face day, thats not representative to how she looked if other pictures are something to go by.

  • @Mullahgrrl I'm not seeing any Miss Piggy. I think she's gorgeous:) I've seen a few of her other pictures as well. Maybye this one is what someone painted when she was older.

  • you cannot beat the old songs or the old singers. god bless whoever saved them.

  • i prefer this over lady gaga

  • @BeatlesFetish09 are you kidding me? I prefer the sound of lawnmower over Lady Gaga.

  • Thank goodness for Youtube or else how will we ever get to hear all these wonderful old songs.

  • I Sing Good songs Allllll the Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiime!!!

  • I really love this song. It's really comforting.

  • Who besides me thinks this song would be perfect for an episode of 'Cold Case' that takes place in the 30s?

  • I love this.

  • Bessie Smith was a HUGE inspiration to Janis Joplin & others. Smith was making a comeback before she died. She died of injuries from an auto accident. You can read her bio in wikipedia. Smith was buried in Philadelphia, PA. The grave was unmarked until Janis Joplin & Smith's old housekeeper paid for it, but I'm certain Joplin paid for most of it. You can find a short Smith bio in findagrave.

  • @wb3ebb She did die indeed of the injuries from the car accident but she actually could have been saved and still singing up until the 50's. Because Jim Crow laws played a major role in her death. Black hospitals back then only had the hand-me-down materials that had been used up by the white hospitals. And at that time and place it was impossible. Her death was basically because of the lack of care

  • Can you upload Cemetry blues please?

  • For me this is simply beautiful music, expertly played and sung.No doubt about it those people would put our "pop" shit to shame!Sing on Bessie!

  • Sounds like my life story. God bless you, Bessie!

  • This is great, and it is soon 90 years ago !!

  • i love her 1920's vibe..and the way she wears them flapper hats..

  • A song to feel sorry for yourself to..

    wow is me!

anyways, she is an abso lutely awesome singer

i never got the chance to hear it at home

even though we heard it in my class(:

she is pretty and very talented

  • @perfectangel1213 Kudos to you for not limiting yourself to stuff that was released within the last five minutes and realizing that great music is timeless!

And it's "renaissance" by the way. ;-)

  • Lads. Who first wrote/performed this song?

  • Thank God VH1 named her among the best female singers of rock and roll. Otherwise I'd never would have heard of Dear Bessie Smith!!!!

  • i love this WOMAN!!!!!!

  • Love this! Thank You Ms. Bessie!

  • Wonderful. Just wonderful!! 5*

    Thanks for sharing.

  • The queen of the BLues indeed.A wonderful performance.Power, emotion, feeling and a real sense for timing.

  • I have to be honest and say that Marion Harris' version in 1916 is much better.

  • You seem to have missed the point that Smith was a blues singer, Harris was an excellent vauderville singer, but could not match Smith in phrasing, note bending or expressing the despair and depressed state of most of the black slaves of the day.

Harris came from a well off family, where as Smith came from the other end of the social spectrum.

  • @martonburg

I'm just being honest with what my ears like the sound of.

I'd love to talk to you, you really seem to know what you are talking about.

I think Harris has more emotion in her music though but don't worry everyone always dissagrees with me LOL.

    Was Harris the original?

  • @harrygmattin I think so. I also agree that she is the best. Smith is wonderful too though. I also love the Mills Brothers version. :)

  • vauderville?

  • @martonburg Marion Harris, the first widely-known white woman to sing jazz and blues, is better in my opinion. Bessie Smith is wonderful as well though. :)

  • @ShiningOne10 Marion Harris could not stand in the same room with Smith. A whiny poser.

  • @luvureally All right. That's your opinion, and I respect it.

  • haha its like a skull saying III AINT GOT NO BODY

  • Wow incredibly beautiful!.

  • ok guys, Smith was an idol to both Joplin and Holiday and a big influence on both. Bessie Smith's personal mentor was Ma Rainey. It doesn't any good to badmouth any of them!

  • I'm sitting here at a top of the range computer listening to music recorded nearly a century ago. I love it.

  • ditto!

  • @Necromortis61 I know.... isn't it amazing?!

  • @Necromortis61 white ass

  • @sunlovedulce Racist ass =o

  • A gal(e) force nine. Such power.

  • Fantastic. And (as usual) great info. Tks.

  • ten years ago

  • like billie holiday

  • Wrong! Billie Holiday is like her.

  • totally agree with u , ueball12 ...this days of real talented artist are over .

  • i'm not the biggest fan of Bessie Smith but this song is unbelieveable! i mean i just couldnt understand how she could get her voice so tamed and well rounded like that. This is true music & and we dont need these horrible "pop star" singers, for example ; Lady gaga? uhm thats the oddest name ive ever herd, and just to mention she tdid horrible on american idol.

there's my opinion, take it or leave it.

    -eugine (:

  • Why drag Janis into it?

  • Why cause Janis is not even in the same Universe as the great Master Bessie Smith thats why..........

  • ANYBODY HAS "my sweetie went away"? IT'S STILL MY BESSIE'S FAVOURITE

  • I have it, I found it very easily :D

But i prefer this actual song over it n.n

    Bessie's so wonderful *-*

  • she recorded this w/ armstrong but i can't f ind it!

  • why is it that when i try to find the lyrics to this song, i get a different version?

  • i tried too, i think this isn't the original.

  • well if that's so then i like this one more than the original

  • me too

  • you should check out the mills brothers version here on youtube... that's my favorite version

  • It is the original from Bessie Smith And Her Band. Singers vary from time to time. Don't worry

  • Ironic that Bessie would sing this song to what is Janis Joplin's signature tune!

    twiggy dot c

  • Bessie was Janis biggest inspiration. She even donated a gravestone in her memory.

  • Is Charlie Dixon the banjo player?
