No, he was trying to get AWAY from the singing. Didn't you see him trying to run OUT of the yard? He couldn't though with the walls blocking him, also as his owners would get closer to him while singing the song he would try to run away from them.
@singedrac good theory. But we would have to ask the owners about the dog's behavior during birthday parties, and also how often they celebrate birthday parties in their house. As you said, it could be the dog has been classically conditioned. The dog's owner said the dog gets "upset" and "refuses" to say in the house. Maybe he didn't interpret the dog's behavior properly. It is also possible the dog has a negative association to the song - just can't think of one. The owners should thnk abou it

Maybe the dog has witnessed what birthday parties are like and remembers the happy birthday song and when he hears the song he thinks, just like you said "it's my birthday!" and then he goes outside because that's where he knows birthday parties take place.
