As a guy, I've always respected the "art" of some women's movies that illustrate the complicated relationships between mothers/daughters. I have to say, this scene--I've lived a version of this scene with my own father--and as "macho" as any of us are, in our society, I bet more than one of my fellow brothers has watched this scene and recalled the anger, resentment, hurt & ultimately love that we walked through in a scene from our life, with our father, similar to this.
I read somewhere a while ago that Daniel's scene was mostly adlib. eg he was told the general story or script to the affect of a sons resentment towards his father because of a seemingly innocent concern or insult to something that happened when he was a child. Apparently Pete nor anyone on the crew knew what Daniel was going to say or do. Not sure where or how long ago i read it but has anyone else heard or seen an interview saying as much?
@ultracrunchy That's not an Irish accent. It's a Belfast, Northern Irish accent. It's very, very different from a standard Irish accent, and Day-Lewis has it spot on.
@Salguine Theres no such thing as a "standard" irish accent, i differs from reigon to reigon, even 10-20 minutes outside Belfast is Ballymena, you''d think you were in scotland hearing their accents.
@20Tomas08 Yes, I know. By "standard" I mean a neutral, regionalism-free accent of the kind that's used by TV news people and that you get taught at theater school.
@dferhadi94 all part of the performance? Don't forget Gerry Conlon was supposed to be a gibbering nervous wreck by this point

at 3:42 I love how he says "and now you are in jail" instead of "now you're in jail" it just makes it better
Htrerise 1 year ago
@Htrerise I think it just sounds like that becasue of the accent, I think he actually said "And now here you are in jail!"
But I could be wrong...I love the northern irish accent, but im from the republic of ireland and so dont sound half as nice as Daniel!
