I lived in New Mexico from Spring of 1989 until the summer of '94.
My local station in New Mexico showed this ident until sometime in '93, b/c I remember seeing this NBC ID logo before watching the 1993 revival of "Scrabble" at the time.
WDIV in Detroit used this slogan as well. "W-DIV, the Place to Be." They also used this slogan to introduce the Channel 4 newscasts. I think WDIV used this slogan from 1990 to around 1992.
Oh, you must know of The Place to Be campaign from 1990-91...there is a copy of the full-length promo on YouTube, but it is a low quality version from 80stvthemes dot com
They have actually had this logo since 1986. The NBC peacock dates back to 1956 to promote color programming.
NBC will probably never change it, since it's such a recognized symbol. You could show someone the peacock without the "NBC" letters and they'll know what it is.
Of course, you'll never know what Jeff Zucker will try with NBC's ratings in the basement...
Well, seeing as how last time they changed their logo drastically, they ended up in the basement for the first time, they probably won't make that mistake again.

In a world without Don LaFontaine...NBC fails. Not really, movie voiceovers would be horrible.

What was the name of the song used in this NBC Promo? I'm wondering if there's a full version of this promo music floating around somewhere?
megamanj2007 4 years ago 4
It's probably a custom composition. I'm not sure who did it.

"NBC - The Place to Be". (!!)

@megamanj2007 I compared it to the composition on Univision. The ending is the same tempo on both this and Univision's network id.

Why would NBC change their logo again? CBS hasn't had anything but the Eye since 1951, so who's to complain?

I remember this promo's music and slogan! Thanx for posting this up!!!

Not anymore. I can't believe Today is expanding to FOUR hours. What was once a great network is quickly going downhill. :(

I agree...NBC's in 4th place now. :(

Maybe "Heroes" and Sunday Night Football will help. But first, you have to jump over FOX.
FaysalAA21 4 years ago
Your local station doesn't have to show the fourth hour.Better yet,you don't HAVE to!!
But they are just doing it to stay a step ahead of ABC's GMA,which added a third hour you can't see on ABC,but on ABC News Now.
FaysalAA21 4 years ago
And apparently, there's a WGAL version, as well.

WMAR-TV was an NBC station in Baltimore until '95,when they switched to ABC.They've had the "alphabet" network into present-day TV.
