Incredible scene, great writing, great acting. The Rev's tragic descent pervades the first season with several touching scenes like this one. One of my favourites is when Al is watching him from the balcony of the Gem as he rants down below in the street to the animals and the passers-by.
I found Reverend Smith to have one of the most heartbreaking storylines in the entire series. And Ray McKinnon pulled it off wonderfully. It's too bad this show got canceled after only 3 seasons. I guess HBO had to put there money elsewhere, like paying for Sarah Jessica Parker's wardrobe for Sex & the City. Thus far we have 2 Sex & the City films, & 0 for Deadwood. It's truly a damned shame.

It is so frustrating that such talents like this keep slipping out of the public's conscience. That's one reason I really hate growing up in this decade as a teenager. But then again, when I consciously seek good work of arts cos the media never seems to fulfill that obligation, I see things like this which is just a pleasure to watch made better only by the fact that I had to consciously seek it.
Reverend Smith is one of the most endearing characters in Deadwood. I agree with JoanieStubbs that this is one of the best scenes. I love the last line on here..."An evening stroll with friends. I would so enjoy that."
That music... it stills gets me. And the absolute despair when he says, "Then I am simply losing my mind." I don't think there is anything on television right now that allows for so many truly human characters.
Ray first came to my attention as Virgil T Waldrip in the Coen Bros, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Every thing else he has done has been equally brilliant, especially, "The Accountant", which he wrote and directed, as well as starred in, which won him an Oscar in 2002. Look for his "Randy and the Mob" coming soon.
Ray McKinnon has played in Baazar by Stephen king? i know hm only for that!
Good video! nice thanks for that!!!
do you know if he has played in any other film please !?! and sorry for the mistake my english is bad because i'm french! but thank you very much for your video!

This is probably one of the best scenes ever to air on television.

Man this guy made me cry many times in that first season. Heartwrenching.

The nicest and most loving character on the show is also the most cursed. Says a lot about the world presented in the show, and in real life.
Brilliant acting by the way.

Damn this scene i am a grown man and i have shed tears over this. My mother died of Brain cancer and what happens here is almost what happened to her.
Plus there is nothing like watching the vulnerable suffer to pull you apart. first class acting and a first class performance.

A terribly underrated talent for sure - one of the very best actors on Deadwood, even if his was only a supporting role.

Heartbreaking scene, one of the best in the entire series, I think.
