I agree with all of the praise below. If only Verdi could have heard his music so beautifully. Every note of Tebaldi's Desdemona reflects the character's purity and goodness and strength. With utter simplicity, she could make more out of "la mia ghirlanda" than all the "applied" acting in the world.
There has never been a greater Desdemona, never. The way she inflects "il suo nome BAR-bara" just destroys me. Is this from her first studio recording, conducted by Alberto Erede?
I couldn't possibly agree more. Her rendition of this music is a prayer, and a study in the perfection of Verdi's intentions. I know of someone else who can do the same, but I won't mention any names :)
