THIS IS THE MUSIC! Complete awe when I heard this music and that somehow chilling visual. Getting ready to have my mind blown by "Planet of the Apes".
A Brilliant 6!! We now return to "The Glass House" Starring Alan Alda, Dean Jagger, Vic Morrow, G Hammond, Clu Gulager, and Billy Dee Williams. A Classic!!
Wasn't there a bumper with this same music that had rotating movie reels? Or a later version that showed followed the top of a movie reel at film-level, toward a descending view of "The CBS --- Night Movies", sort of like you were boarding a down escalator?
Used to hear this from my bedroom at night, as my folks were watching the movie in the den.
Movies on tv used to be a HUGE deal in the days before vcr's, downloads, etc., so the networks would produce great, movie theater-like openings and bumpers like this one to compliment the feature films. I just remember hearing the various themes as a kid and knowing there was something big (and usually adult) coming on.
I distinctly remember this bumper because of the horns that starts off. I was only a little kid when CBS used this. I would try to stay up late to watch. And yes, most of the movies were scary
I can't tell you how great this bumper is. How many times did I watch movies as a kid and heard this music. It also meant I had a few minutes to grab a Yankee Doodle or go to the bathroom! Didn't want to miss a second of Papillion!
I remember watching Papillion at this old womans house in South Carolina one night by myself, I thought it was scarry, depressing, but good. Whats a Yankee Doodle ?
lol,,I never heard of those but I do remember the Hostess Cupcakes & Dingdong commercial with the cartoon cupcake captain, he would say "Dingdongs" real loud, I was always at a friends house watching cartoons & this happened in front of his mom, we would laugh hysterically.
I've also heard htem called "Moon Pies" as well, but that is usually in the South. BTW, that bumper brings back memories. I think it was used as late as the early 1980's for the real late CBS movies they aired after the local 11 PM news.
How wild! I finally saw this and I think I'm the ONLY one who thought this theme was SCARY! The beginning theme was okay (the one before the movie started for the night), but the bumper just TERRIFIED me! I got goosebumps just hearing again and I have NO idea why! LOL
,,thats because the backdrop was pitch black dark, the horns were loud, music mellow dramatic, 3 giant rotating letters, this bumper woke you up if you were asleep & it was almost time for bed !
Amen to that...this bumper and the ones for the CBS Late Movie used to nearly send me into hysterics. I used to hate hearing the opening theme because I knew a night of sheer terror was in store!!! (I was too terrified to get out of bed and tell my parents to turn it off...I mean, what if the bumper came on while I was in the hallway??!! I'd have been trapped, after all!!!)
Perhaps because this was also used a zillion times during commercial breaks of the "CBS Late Movie" (which also shared the main theme)... usually scary movies and episodes of The Night Stalker... and it DOES sound haunting or foreboding.
I think this is more the reason...I was never even in the room when this was playing, but I always huddled under the covers when I heard it. It's just the music and what was playing on tv while it was on.
It just played again as I loaded this page. Amazing! It just gave me the weirdest flashback: cold air-conditioning on a late summer night, being allowed to stay up and watch the CBS Late Movie (I totally associate it with CBS Late Movie).
If CBS pulls this clip, then the network would be extremely and severely stupid for doing so,and not the so-called "Tiffany Network" it had claimed to be for many, many years. It brought back tons of memories,Also in fact, If the network still has movie programs of this sort, should BRING BACK this very specific bumper clip and keep it for all eternity!!!.
To have been born 10-15 years earlier (born in 1982). I have some excellent memories of the late-80s and early-90s, right before TV entered the horrible state it's in now...(sigh)
well even in those days I still don't consider them that good, except Al Bundy & Married With Children, if you were born in the 60's you would have experienced the fun stuff.
Does anyone remember the (I'm almost positive it was) CBS Late Late Show movie theme? The animation was made to look like marquee lights. I've been looking for a clip of that everywhere.
Duh, thanks. I should have said "I've been looking everywhere except on YouTube." I feel a right idiot. Thanks for clueing me in. I may be an idiot, but I'm a happy one. (goes off whistling tv themes into the sunset...)
Hey alliereadsbooks, I know the one you're talking about. I've been looking for 5 years try ing to find it. If you are from the Chicago area like I am originally, (now live in CA), There is a station named WBBM-TV Channel 2. Every Saturday night they had a late movie called The Best of CBS. I desperately want that clip too. It was on in the late 60s to early 80s. If you find it, please let me know.
The following bumper from "The CBS Thursday Night Movies" came in 1973. The following video would be rated a 6 in my book. I remember these clips to some degree as a little kid; nothing like a classic from the years 1972 to 1976. Any Questions?
ahhh yes, i remember this. sigh Again reminds me of being a kid in pajama's up late before going to bed. Every time the commercial break came i hated it because it gave my parents a chance to say "well it's getting time for bed lad.."
Man...I remember this SO well. It was always one of the last things I saw on TV before my mother rushed me off to bed, and I could hear it as I drifted off to sleep. Memories....
I remember this when I was a kid. I hope CBS does give us a break and let this stay on You-Tube. The internet is like "one big party line" as my father says but also, it is also a huge memory bank for humanity as well. Wish they would release a DVD or VHS of these bumpers, when I fix my 1970 Zenith Chromacolor, it would be a blast to play it on it again.
I couldn't agree more! And wouldn't it be great to have the 1960s intros & bumpers to "NBC Saturday Night At The Movies" (also Monday/Tuesday Night At The Movies) on DVD?
Me too. I like old TV's, somtimes I try to fix them. I have an old 1970 Zenith 23 inch console as well as my "newest" TV, a 1982 25 inch Zenith console, these clips would be at home on those sets.
Way before cable tv.

I think the Night Stalker was scarier than this bumper, the Zombie episode I think was the scariest, along with the skeleton on the motorcycle.
