Wow, I'm surprised I stumbled across this video. I had this exact same crossing on my very first Tyco HO layout. I got it for Christmas when I was like 2 (I'm 33 now) and it ran underneath our Christmas tree for several years. Of course, like most Tyco products, it stopped working and is now in pieces in a box somewhere. But I still have it!
before i got into lionel i had a faily large collection of tyco train sets they were great they were more then what people seen them as i only had one set that was bad and didnt work when i first got it if was a 0-6-0 dockside switcher set but i got another one and it was fine i had some kind of crossing setup but i dont remember if it was this one this was back in the 80s i was very young at the time
TIP: Install a variable resister (dial) in front of the mechanism so you can roll it back a little bit so it slows down and lets the bells ring a bit longer.
If it feeds the same voltage back to the track you'll have to Y splice it so you only slow the voltage to the bell/lights. DC is easy to mess with.
I'm sure in real physics scaling down a real RXR would probably seem fast and high pitched to us giants, but a slower pace is more natural.
The night glow was stickers you add to the road stripes, they came in the box with crossing, over time they would start to come off, so to say night glow was not worth the time to put it on the crossing, these crossings first was in the golden eagle train set and then the next year in the catalog, Tyco was the lionel in HO as far as operating accessories go, many great operating accessories, I can't understand why no one has rereleased them to the model train public again...
I had one similar to this but mine had a building and gates and flashers. I think mine was made by Bachmann rather than Tyco. Nonetheless, to a 6 year old budding train nut i thought it was coooool!
I remember buying this as a kid in the early 80's. Cost $6.36 ($6 + 6% Sales Tax) The "Night Glow" were the glow in the dark stickers that had to be applied to the roadway. I guess it was never applied to this model before you purchaed it. The night glow was pretty cool to see with the crossing in action. It was an awesome RXR signal and the most realistic at the time.
Ingenious way to make a mechanical flasher relay out of the bell hammer to get a semi-realistic (too fast) alternating flash action. Most of the signals of this design just flashed the lights together, and nowadays when you buy model crossing signals you usually have to buy an electronic controller seperate to make them flash realistically.
I found one of these at a local train show, and even though I only have a modular display, I figured it was rare enough to put on the display. Mine however doesn't work. It's missing the clockwork gears.
You brought back a lot of memorys to me I had on of these when I was a kid but I thought my had gates also I can't remember but I did now better and ended up breaking it because I did not know better.
I Used to have one of those but it wasnt Tyco brand it was different, it had the crossing signals with gates on both sides, and it had a lil house it was actually more prettier and they light up too but there was no sound and it was a different brand too...heh i missed the good old days >>
i use to have on of those crossings years ago when i was a little boy. got it for my birthday back then. my old man took it back though, said it was a piece of junk. in retrospec i wish i would have stopped him. thanks for putting this up if i can come across one i want to get one too.
If you look close you'll see I am using Bachmann E-Z track during the "train running" part. You simply have to break the locking tab off the connecting EZT pieces, but they otherwise line right up.
You're right about that. But it is possible to fine-tune the sound be moving the bell around a bit. Still the clicking is kinda quaint in a way. What primitive times we came from, ha ha!
To call an ERROR in my last post! The Tyco TIDE hopper WAS in the catalog 73-74 (think I'm right without digging the little catalogs out) But was never offered for sale by Tyco. I really like Tyco's covered hoppers, my Favorite is the Maxwell House, one of the few I "a poor boy" could afford in the mid 70s. Also the Tyco Piggybacks, I love them, I have two pair of tyco Bubble Yum piggys, that I bought and put on the flatcar. Tyco Trains and slotcars was a big part of my life in the 70s!
Train items are cool. The Bubble Yum trailers are neat, I have 4 of them. Yellow BN boxcar is fairly rare. The TIDE hopper that was never cataloged, but never sold by TYCO. So this guy is the seller on ebay who recently sold a Tide Hopper that he created. It was a neat piece!
The "Nite Glow" models were just regular crossings that came with a sheet of glow in the dark sticker strips that you could put wherever you wanted. The packages were a little misleading in making you think there was glow in the dark paint instead of plain white. This crossing is probably my favorite Tyco accessory. Thanks for sharing this!
I believe the "NITE GLOW" crossing only came with the Golden Eagle train sets(for those of you that do not know-the Golden Eagle train sets were only sold in the 1980 year and not after)--if you got one later-it was left over on the shelf.
we all know that tyco, life like and some model power trains are just toys
not models
don't forget it!

Just though you could try this with a $3 part.

The lights are to quick I think, but it is a good system.....

It flashes and dings rather fast - needs some sort of simple governor on the mech to slow it down.

The nice thing about this accessory is you don't need to run a pair of wires to the power pack accessory terminals to run it.

That EZ track doesn't look very natural to me but if I had a layout on a carpeted floor, I guess that would be good enuf.

It's a nice crossing, but when the train goes, I hear more of the clicking of the hammer more than the bell occasionally. Still really nice!
