  • moar liek Donna ALI amirite?

  • Wow this fucking sucks.

  • They should have killed the drummer -

No one can play this tune with such bad rhythm underneath....

  • First time ive heard jaco not sound good!

  • JACO WAS HERE

  • Kinda sad. Not his best here.

  • anyone have tabs for the bassline jaco does after the beginning

  • @chapanese96 TABS!!???? no dude we dont have any fucking tabs for this. TABS....jesus christ

  • addfa

  • Jaco could fuck up his own musical wet dream and STILL sound light years better than 99% you sad mo'fuckers who thing this shit sounds bad...It's an improv jackasses, bass and drums, shit he can play the heads anyway he wants to with no harmonic backing..Play on BASS MASTA !!!

  • @1dabop THis is Donna Lee bruvar, its not an improv. Miles Davis, i think. Well, the noodling is clearly a bit of the old freestyle but the chord changes and the main melody is well old irie

  • @elpudino and improv to you is what ???

  • Jaco as always amazing. I will not think jaco was that big headed. His music spoke for itself.

  • It's not the tempo or the tune. It's his feel!

  • So what? He's doing a bop standard at medium tempo! There's at least a dozen jazz bassists in Los Angeles that can do this and much more on 'Giant Steps' much less than 'Donna Lee'.

  • @robertd1253 that is true, however, there are millions of people that have transcribed tranes solo on giant steps, it doesnt mean that trane is not good. I do agree that this is not jacos best performance on donna lee though. I also think that some people make jaco way 2 overrated, but it doesnt mean he isnt good.

  • @robertd1253 Jaco in his prime could play this tune at least twice as fast with ease. This peformance isn't bad, but nevertheless it isn't a very good demonstration of what he could do with "Donna Lee"¨live , and I have many recordings as "proof". Just send me a private message here on youtube and I can send you some uploading-links that I think will alter your perception.
  • incredible

  • mmmmmmm jaco sounds kinda not so good in this one, do not mistake me, i think he's great, but i don't quite like this.

  • @baalahar Keep in mind the serious drugs he was taking throughout his career...

  • don't like you fretless?

  • those staccatos on the triplets sound SO good...i always do it more legato, but i'm going to change now.

  • What a lot of people don't realize is a lot of his solos were spliced -- not to take away from his greatness, but recordings and live showed a very different level of expertise at times.

  • I don't think that's at all accurate. I don't doubt he punched in now and then, like almost anyone in the modern age, but if you listen to his live stuff, (when he wasn't too drugged), it smokes! I've read quite a bit about him, and nobody ever suggested what you're saying. His poor live performances were always due to drugs-not lack of expertise.

  • Not taking anything away from the man. He was a genius. Just sayin.'

  • crazy version, fuckin love jazz

  • This is not the version of "Donna Lee" that Jaco got famous for. Check out the version

from his debut-album and you'll be amazed.

    It's here on youtube.

  • You are right- he lays back- timing is sh...

Maybe it's due to the flanger amount

  • I love jaco, but to be honest I found this version quite shotty

  • Agreed, Jaco is amazing, but this is probably the worst i've heard of him. Not that it sucks by any means. It was 1984 though, his life was kind of in the crapper at this point.

  • was that hatzigeorgiou on the fuzzy bass?

  • : (

  • So is this Jaco butchering the melody here?

  • Yeah, that's him fluffing those notes.

  • @cybertooth49 def half-cocked.

  • Jaco's lookin cool here

  • can anyone tell me how does Jaco get both the bassline and the bass solo notes? is he using harmonics?

  • It's in the info box on the right.

  • oh, thanx, that's what i thought first too!

  • You're welcome.

  • ya he does it alot

  • It's a question of work !!!

  • RIP both geniuses Rashied and Jaco!

  • Rashied Ali RIP

  • Jaco RIP

  • @dogwitamullet u forgot a little something, aka 'Jaco pastorius RIP'

  • @chapanese96 correct! thank you sir.

  • He looks like steve vai with those faggy glasses.... just kidding! only steve vai looks faggy with them.

he is flipping off all of the bassists in world like "I'm the best, motherfucker." he actually said stuff like that which I find hilarious because he was so arrogant even though he really was the best.

  • he actually got to miles davis's house before anyone knew who was he :)))

and he knocked on miles's door ...miles opened and jaco said-i am the best bassist in the world

  • ...bullshit, this was the phrase he said to Zawinul (and not to Miles), when Weather Report played in Florida in 1976...

  • Yep he went to Zawinul after a WR set and said "I'm John Francis Pastorius III, nd I'm the best bass player in the world!"

  • and Zawinul replied "get the fuck outta sight!"

Jaco is amazing indeed, here i can see why

  • exact!

  • @Josephdorf03 lol yes he was truely awesome

  • @Josephdorf03 because he's an alcoholic, insecure, ill at ease with others, and mentally ill because of these thinking errors; if he had recovered before death he would have been a lot more relaxed...

  • @Josephdorf03 well, as he used to say, "It ain't bragging if you can back it up"

    lmao

  • @Josephdorf03 : He was was'nt arrogant, that was only bagging, but...................he was the best!!

  • it looks like hes playing a geddy lee in the that photo

  • Well, Geddy Lee actually plays a Guild Fretless Jaco Pastorius edition

  • he plays it on the track "Malignant Narcissism" which, next to YYZ, is one of the most epic Rush songs. I thought it was a fender, though.

  • That sounds more than an 'epic song'. Title sounds as a psychodinamic diagnosis for Jaco -though not the most correct one imho

  • I could have sworn that he played the Fender model?

  • I was pretty sure he played the Geddy Lee signature jazz bass...

  • Jaco, numero uno, period..

  • ouai sauf quand y'a Hatzigeorgiou qui ne fait que le copier le long en large. Je hais ce mec!!!

  • Sorry, don't speak, read og write it.

  • Great recordings from Jaco. Thank you for this!!
