@Brynjulvify Until there was YT CG was considered very difficult. Now, since YT you can see and hear hundreds of pieces that are more difficult by far. Trust me on this-- Your left hand fingers just need to do this over and over and over and over until they learn to land in the right places automatically every time. Thats all there is to it. You do need to be able to bar chord but thats all. Let me know how it goes-Art
@funguy4utube Thank You, but if I was TLJ do you think I would be hanging out here on youtube?, I'd be in Cannes or Tahiti or some very expensive resort with a drink that had a little paper umbrella in it.
Look at some Merle Travis videos. He was famous for playing your way. But the way you learn to use your other fingers is you simply start doing it. It may seem weird at first but right away you will start seeing how much more you can do. Especially for chords. Just consider the way you have been doing it as a bad habit and work on it. It won't take to see the difference.
@SolemnCollector Classical guitar players are the original fingerpickers. Notice that often if its country music its called fingerpicking. If its jazz or popular music we call it finger style. Its all the same thing. Instead of using a pick we use our fingers. Its standard. Your thumb plays the 3 low strings, E,A, and D. and your first 3 fingers play G.B, and E. There are exceptions of course but thats it.
@Ambister Read my description box and I tell you which exact one it is. Compare it to the tab I uploaded. When it gets printed out only then can you read that it says tabbed by Ray Hewitt. Learn it. Its free and you get to keep it forever.
I just want to say thanks to a true artist who unselfishly extends his knowledge to us aspiring musicians. Youre instructions are a breeze to get through!

@Deadshot001 I saw his video a couple of years ago. and I believe he learned it in a week like he said. A professional studio musician could just play it from the sheet music the first time he saw it. Most serious guitar players could learn it in an hour or two. I also think there are those who could just "Play it" from hearing it once. without having the sheet music. Unfortunately those people are very rare.
@revedmusic thats not really true somthing of this level would take at least a good bit of practice to get the whole thing down even for the best its you need to listen to a song so many times before playing all the rhythm and all right
Thank you Revedmusic. Very professionally presented instructive and helpful lesson, for one of the best classical compositions of all time. Probably the best tutorial version on Youtube in my opinion.
@revedmusic Thanks to your lessons, I learned Classical Gas the weekend before my musical practical. Thanks for the lessons and thanks to you I played it very well and hopefully I'll get a good grade. I uploaded myself playing it if anybody wants to check it out.
@TheCiiAN Thanks for the comment. I heard you and I hope you continue to play it. If you don't play it once in awhile you can lose it. but if you do play it once in awhile you get to keep it your whole life-Art.
Have you ever heard the Michael Lucarelli version? In my opinion it is the best Classical Gas playing, even if it is not the original Mason composition. Check it out anytime. Just search "Classical Gas Lucarelli" and click the first video, I can't put the llink here. And thanks, nice teaching. I'll try every lesson, I love this music.
@lumaalmeida I thought I had seen every CG version there is on Yt. That man can play. I especially like the sound he gets with whatever audio gear he is using. Wish I had it. Thats a big sound. I'm afraid I just have Audacity and the sound is thin compared to his. Plus hes a much better player. But sure wish I had his audio gear. Great audio reproduction.
I've been playing guitar for half a year. I can master rock, blues and some fingerstyle, but this is the hardest I have tried. I think I want to send an video response to show you that I can play this when I learn it. :D
@Brynjulvify Please post it when you have it. Sounds like you are determined to get this down. Eventually it will be "under your hands" and the hard parts will seem easy. Its just a matter of pracice. Eventually your fingers will know where to land on the fret board authomatically. Good Luck. Art
This is a great song and I would like to learn it but I don't know what the finger picking for it is. Can you make a video to show what you are doing with your right hand?
@BrownBread27 Hi. The finger picking pattern is shown in the tab. Read my description boxes and they tell you where to get it on the net for free.I also posted a tab video of it. I don't show the right hand because it is all standard on the tab. low 3 strings thumb, high 3 strings 1st, 2nd. and 3rd fingers. Be sure to read the description boxes for all 8 videos. You can't do this without the tab. Once you get it you will see..Good Luck.
@zuiaki I probably should have originally but I did this over a year ago. It took alot of time to do 8 lessons based on existing tab and I just don't want to do any of it over again.
@commetsmasher Actually they start at 0:14 In any case suggest you not bother with this and instead go to other YT providers of lessons for this song. You can find them that teach the whole song in 2 minutes. Meanwhile I will teach my way, without your approval.
Hey Revedmusic. Thankyou very much for these videos. I have a question. In bar 10 of the tab do you play it as shown with two notes played at once? When I say two notes at once I mean the second fret on the G string and the first fret on the B string. In other versions I have seen only the first fret on the B string is played but an open A is played at the same time. I can't see what you play in the video. Thanks in advance.
@VUandChips I have seen it written both ways, however the Guitar Player Magazine edition and Mason's book Classical Gas play both notes. First fret b string and 2nd fret g string (both are played on the 3rd beat of bar 10)
@VUandChips I cant find these tabs at all.. Could you please send them to me or point me where to get them? I dont think they're the set that is 14th down anymore.
@TheBeeman You are right. They have added a couple. Its now the 16th down. Also I have uploaded a new video so that the tabs are more easily identified as the right ones.
FINALLY, SOMEONE WITH FATTER DIGITS THAN MINE. i mostly play a 12 string, alot of fingerpicking and people ask me how I do it, but have no choice. I wish I had spider fingers like a Joe Satrianni, but I'll get buy. Great lesson, great song. You make it look so easy. Now play it like Tommy Emanuel. !!

@TheRoflc0pterz. My advice is to play it with whatever position your wrist feels comfortable in. Notice that many great players do not arch their wrists at all.
Mate you're brilliant, I have wanted to learn this but never bothered because all the other lessons and tabs were only nearly right. Please keep making videos we appreciate them, you have a good way of explaining. I look forward to more vids :)
heyy, nice video really helpfull. i play a variety of music ranging from metal and rock to classical and jazz. My main electric is an ibanez SAS36FM and my acoustic is a small (really old) nilon string. I would like to get into more styles such as classical gas. I will be getting a new (descent) acoustic but was wondering whether to get a steel or nylon string. I am scared that nylon will resctrict what i can play whereas steel will slash up my fingers playing like this. Any advice?
@215fabian Several people have commented about that. I know guitar players with even bigger hands than mine. I read 40 years ago once that Andre Segovia had fat short fingers. Since then I have always noticed in pictures of him that it was true. he did.
i think what you have done here sir is very good and very helpful, but your beginning is very elementary, and this is not a piece for beginners. If they do not know an a minor, this is really beyond them. anyway, very educational,. good luck
I think you are great I have just started to learn this and you make it so easy with step by step to follow (compared to other vids) for beginners like myself. I don't want to get ahead of myself so I won't watch any further lesson until I have mastered this one first but in the other vids does it show what you are doing on the other end of the guitar? ie: this shows a close up of the chords you play but what about which strings you are plucking?
@funkyf33t. The 3 base strings are played with your thumb. The 3 uipper strings with your first 2nd and 3rd fingers with variations decided by you. I don't show which strings because that is clearly shown in the tab I ask you to download. Read all the description boxes. Don't waste time trying to learn this without the tab. Good Luck.
@sailxonxmusic HI- Trust me- If you had the tab or the sheet music you would be able to see which strings and frets are being used by my right hand.Get the tab and learn this 10 times faster. Also you need the tab after you learn it because when you don't play this for a week or two and then when you want to play it you will have forgotten some bars and the tab will remind you. Trust me.
@revedmusic The problem is that I can't read tabs.. And I can't read notes either, I basically learn everything by ear or through youtube. And there's no one near me who can teach me tabs either so it sucks.. But thanks anyway, I'll just get the tabs and see if I can figure it out. And I appreciate the lessons! :)
@lachlanSB .This is whats called finger style guitar. Its the way classical guitar is played. I guess something similar could be worked out for a pick but this piece requires different notes on different strings played at the same time so you really can' do it with a pick syle.
@lachlanSB Its a good idea to learn both. Most of the greats can play both. Notably, Eric clapton, Chet Atkins, Earl Klugh. and others. It will open alot of pieces for you that you can't play otherwise. good luck with this.
Most beginners i know dont know this song damn get to the point ve learned alot garder song and im watching you play and im playing almost exactly right with any gay tabs not to be mean but i bet everbody feels the same as me and is not sitting with any tabs
@KevinJbwkz I am guessing that English is not your first language. In any case I have no idea what you are trying to say. and hope you spend some time at your high school learning to write and speak English. Or write in your own language.
Thank you for doing this...and your wonderful advise about the overwhelming music and tabs...I've been trying to learn this song for a very long time....michele
Hi- to anyone wanting to learn this please select (more info) on the right and read the whole thing. Many are trying to learn this from the video only and that won't work. If you get the tablature where I tell you you will learn this much easier.
Hi- In the description box on the right in one of the first lessons I explain where you can get the tab on the web. You really must have it. The tab will show you the fingering.
I have always loved this song, even though for the longest time the only version I had ever heard was the version on Mannheim Steamroller's Classical Gas album. Thanks so much for making this lesson, and showing where to get a good set of tabs.
Starting now, I intend to learn and memorize the entire song, even if it takes me to the end of the year! And when I can finally play it all the way through, I shall post a video of me doing so.
@CaptainBulldog I can tell you that anyone can learn to play this. Like anything worthwhile it takes putting in the time. Repition is the only thing that teaches your fingers where to land. Don't give up on this. When you have it you will have it forever if you continue to play it often and it is so well known that when people hear the first 4 or 5 notes they will recognize it and turn thier heads to see if you are really going to do this or not.
Hi. If you read the description boxes I tell you where you can get the tab for free. You have to be willing to work a bit to learn this. You have to get the tab, have it in front of you, read the description boxes and you have to put in serious time. You will not learn this just watching videos. There is no easy way. You have to really want to learn this correctly. I suggest you check out Helisel's videos they are easy and might be what you are looking for.
Fartsam08- In later lessons you won't see my right hand at all. I tell you that you must have the tab in front of you. Your wasting your time if your trying to learn this just from the video.
hands down the best on line lesson I have had. Every one. Don't worry so much about what anyone says that is negative, you are doing a great service to the song and true lovers of this song. Is that transcription perfect? I really don't care for perfect, like you said even Mason played around with it and that only illustrates the love of the song, Who does not want to grow what they love? It sounds really close and has improved my playing if only for your step by step hand placement!!!!
Johnrussom- thank you for the compliment. Actually I haven't received any negative comments. I invite questions and comments because its fun. and I want kids to play this. Its a classic. and a major piece of guitar history. certainly responsible for starting more players in my day than any other.
Revedmusic, I have to say I can't tell you how much I truely appreciate the clarity of your taking the time to do this, and how well you've bothered not only explaining it, but how simple you've made it to comprehend as well as how clear you've been able to film and light this.
This is an incredible teaching experience. I'm just beginning, if I can even play this so-so, I'll be estatic! Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. I have to tell you this is being done with a 5 year old cheap Sony Cybershot still camera.that could do 15 minutes of movie.( $150 several years ago} It has a match head size mic. I bought it an $20 larger 8 gig memory card and I can now do about 2 hrs. of movie if I need to. My camcorder quit on me a couple of years ago. Have patience and stay with me. Its a great song to learn several things that are not too hard to do but you will use in your playing forever..
Ive wanted to learn this song for a long time, i'm not sure who to trust online to learn guitar tabs. but you are a good teacher, and it looks like you are the real deal.
njoysey. I appreciate your trust. I have nothing to sell and am not in any music related business. I am doing this because I think its fun. Have some patience. make comments, ask questions thats the fun part for me. It may be a week or so between some lessons being uploaded but I intend to do the whole song.Maybe 15 lessons I don't know how many.
thank you so much for this lesson. i am 61 and only now finally starting to learn to play. i cannot thank you enough for this lesson. i look forward to one day playing the entire song....
Oldmanholder. It takes about a month of an hour or two a day for most to get this. Then some additional time to have it feel natural enough that you can play the subtlties of it instead of just trying to get to the notes on time. You just have to pay your dues and take the time. Good luck with this and don't hesitate to ask questions in this comments section.
I have been trying to learn this song for some time now and have had difficulty finding the right music. At last I have the correct music and someonet to teach it.
Spawnmorelulz I will have the second lesson done in another week or so. I am not sure but I think the whole thing will be about 6 lessons of nearly 9 minutes each. Thanks for your interest. This is a great piece and its not so hard when you are shown the right fingering.
I gave up learning this about 6 months ago. Now I'm going to try it again. These lessons are actually good, it is just a really hard piece to play.

Good Luck.
revedmusic 1 year ago
@funkyf33t Yeah I was wondering which strings he plucks too.. Cuz I get the whole chord thing but I can't figure out which strings he plucks..
sailxonxmusic 1 year ago
@sailxonxmusic HI- Trust me- If you had the tab or the sheet music you would be able to see which strings and frets are being used by my right hand.Get the tab and learn this 10 times faster. Also you need the tab after you learn it because when you don't play this for a week or two and then when you want to play it you will have forgotten some bars and the tab will remind you. Trust me.
revedmusic 1 year ago
@revedmusic The problem is that I can't read tabs.. And I can't read notes either, I basically learn everything by ear or through youtube. And there's no one near me who can teach me tabs either so it sucks.. But thanks anyway, I'll just get the tabs and see if I can figure it out. And I appreciate the lessons! :)

is it possible to play this song with just a pick? or is plucking a necessary?
lachlanSB 1 year ago
@lachlanSB .This is whats called finger style guitar. Its the way classical guitar is played. I guess something similar could be worked out for a pick but this piece requires different notes on different strings played at the same time so you really can' do it with a pick syle.
revedmusic 1 year ago
@revedmusic Ok thanks for the quick reply, guess Im gonna have to put down my pick for a while and attempt to learn stuff using my fingers.
lachlanSB 1 year ago
@lachlanSB Its a good idea to learn both. Most of the greats can play both. Notably, Eric clapton, Chet Atkins, Earl Klugh. and others. It will open alot of pieces for you that you can't play otherwise. good luck with this.

KevinJbwkz 1 year ago
@KevinJbwkz I am guessing that English is not your first language. In any case I have no idea what you are trying to say. and hope you spend some time at your high school learning to write and speak English. Or write in your own language.

Hi- to anyone wanting to learn this please select (more info) on the right and read the whole thing. Many are trying to learn this from the video only and that won't work. If you get the tablature where I tell you you will learn this much easier.
revedmusic 2 years ago
can you please zoom in on the fingerpicking, please...cuz i really dont understand how to do it...and its such a nice song
meesterzenki 2 years ago
Hi- In the description box on the right in one of the first lessons I explain where you can get the tab on the web. You really must have it. The tab will show you the fingering.
revedmusic 2 years ago
I have always loved this song, even though for the longest time the only version I had ever heard was the version on Mannheim Steamroller's Classical Gas album. Thanks so much for making this lesson, and showing where to get a good set of tabs.
Starting now, I intend to learn and memorize the entire song, even if it takes me to the end of the year! And when I can finally play it all the way through, I shall post a video of me doing so.
Thanks again!

CaptainBulldog 2 years ago
@CaptainBulldog I can tell you that anyone can learn to play this. Like anything worthwhile it takes putting in the time. Repition is the only thing that teaches your fingers where to land. Don't give up on this. When you have it you will have it forever if you continue to play it often and it is so well known that when people hear the first 4 or 5 notes they will recognize it and turn thier heads to see if you are really going to do this or not.

at the end couldent you have gone slowly through that run, i mean yeh i can still teach myself but it would of been easier

I downloaded the Power Tab program in order to view the tab version you suggested and I still can't open the file. Is there something I'm forgetting?
PauMtz 2 years ago
I suggest you check out Helisel's videos they are easy and might be what you are looking for.
revedmusic 2 years ago
very good and clear instruction, but you cant even see which strings he is plucking
fartsam08 2 years ago
Fartsam08- In later lessons you won't see my right hand at all. I tell you that you must have the tab in front of you. Your wasting your time if your trying to learn this just from the video.
revedmusic 2 years ago
hands down the best on line lesson I have had. Every one. Don't worry so much about what anyone says that is negative, you are doing a great service to the song and true lovers of this song. Is that transcription perfect? I really don't care for perfect, like you said even Mason played around with it and that only illustrates the love of the song, Who does not want to grow what they love? It sounds really close and has improved my playing if only for your step by step hand placement!!!!
johnrussom 2 years ago

Thank you.
Love, grace & peace.

Ive wanted to learn this song for a long time, i'm not sure who to trust online to learn guitar tabs. but you are a good teacher, and it looks like you are the real deal.
njoysey15 2 years ago
njoysey. I appreciate your trust. I have nothing to sell and am not in any music related business. I am doing this because I think its fun. Have some patience. make comments, ask questions thats the fun part for me. It may be a week or so between some lessons being uploaded but I intend to do the whole song.Maybe 15 lessons I don't know how many.

thank you so much for this lesson. i am 61 and only now finally starting to learn to play. i cannot thank you enough for this lesson. i look forward to one day playing the entire song....
oldmanholder 2 years ago
Oldmanholder. It takes about a month of an hour or two a day for most to get this. Then some additional time to have it feel natural enough that you can play the subtlties of it instead of just trying to get to the notes on time. You just have to pay your dues and take the time. Good luck with this and don't hesitate to ask questions in this comments section.

Spawnmorelulz I will have the second lesson done in another week or so. I am not sure but I think the whole thing will be about 6 lessons of nearly 9 minutes each. Thanks for your interest. This is a great piece and its not so hard when you are shown the right fingering.
