So there is not a big surprise that a green fighter like louis would have flaws in his techinque ...to bad he didnt have the luxury of picking easier fights til he was ready for world class competition.

Max was world HW champ for 2 years during a time (1930) when the greatest fighters could not compete and never was able to obtain the belt during integration, on the otherhand Joe lewis taking all comers literally (bum of the week club) held on to the world HW belt for 12years.

Schmeling had a Jewish manager (Joe Jacobs), and Jewish friends. The story about his saving the Jewish children is mentioned below. He was an old pro who respected his opponents, whatever their background, and remained friends with Joe Louis until the latter died. He was used by Goebbels and the Nazi propaganda machine, but they quickly dropped him after he lost his second fight against Louis. After the war he became a successful businessman, and was much loved in his home country.

max scheming was actually a pretty decent man not a Nazi he even payed for Joe Louis funeral and financially helped him.... yup to great men having an honorable fight without prejudice or hate just two men who enjoy boxing

No, Schmeling is a counter puncher, Baer was more the offensive type of fighter. And while Schmeling fought in a very fair style, Baer often operated with unfair punches (to the back of the head, rabbit punches...)

Schmeling as well as Louis are both all-time greats. He had a vicious right hand, a great jab, and was more of a counterpuncher compared to the guy he broke a striking resemblance to, Jack Dempsey. He was able to detect a flaw in Louis' style, and used it to his advantage, landing right hand after right hand. Thanks for posting.

no, the rematch took place before WW2 in 1938. One year later Schmeling won the European Championship and hoped to get another rubber match, but the war made tat third fight impossible.

Louis was the World Champion. The European Championship was a lesser crown.

It would be like the World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies batting it out with the Minor League champs for the Minor League championship. Would that make any sense?
