Joe Louis single handedly dismantled the Nazi image of invincibility and was the youngest heavyweight champ ever. So there is not a big surprise that a green fighter like louis would have flaws in his techinque ...to bad he didnt have the luxury of picking easier fights til he was ready for world class competition.
Also "When Schmeling arrived in New York in June, 1938 for the rematch, he was accompanied by a Nazi party publicist who issued statements that a black man could not defeat Schmeling, and that when Schmeling won, his prize money would be used to build tanks in Germany. Schmeling's hotel was picketed by anti-Nazi protesters in the days before the fight".[45] (wikipedia) Nazi got what he deserved in the rematch
@lhamlett You are a dildo with your 1,2 list GET OVER IT SCHMELING KICKED HIS ASSSS NOT LUCK,FUCKWAD, HE BEAT HIS ASSSS FOR 12 ROUNDS PLAYED WITH him GROW A FUCKING BRAIN
@djk28161 I am assuming your not a racist piece of crap, but from your tone you most likely are one, yet here are more points as to why max is no where near in joe's league. Max was world HW champ for 2 years during a time (1930) when the greatest fighters could not compete and never was able to obtain the belt during integration, on the otherhand Joe lewis taking all comers literally (bum of the week club) held on to the world HW belt for 12years.
Fact is that a Jew was responsible for Max Schmeling missing out on a world title fight with Jimmy Bradock. Hitler was right to kill those dirty kikes.
Schmeling had a Jewish manager (Joe Jacobs), and Jewish friends. The story about his saving the Jewish children is mentioned below. He was an old pro who respected his opponents, whatever their background, and remained friends with Joe Louis until the latter died. He was used by Goebbels and the Nazi propaganda machine, but they quickly dropped him after he lost his second fight against Louis. After the war he became a successful businessman, and was much loved in his home country.
max scheming was actually a pretty decent man not a Nazi he even payed for Joe Louis funeral and financially helped him.... yup to great men having an honorable fight without prejudice or hate just two men who enjoy boxing
@maurice1215 He also saved the lives of three (it could have been two) jewish children. Max Schmeling was a Fallschirmjäger in the Luftwaffe and had no political standing.
No, Schmeling is a counter puncher, Baer was more the offensive type of fighter. And while Schmeling fought in a very fair style, Baer often operated with unfair punches (to the back of the head, rabbit punches...)
Schmeling as well as Louis are both all-time greats. He had a vicious right hand, a great jab, and was more of a counterpuncher compared to the guy he broke a striking resemblance to, Jack Dempsey. He was able to detect a flaw in Louis' style, and used it to his advantage, landing right hand after right hand. Thanks for posting.
no, the rematch took place before WW2 in 1938. One year later Schmeling won the European Championship and hoped to get another rubber match, but the war made tat third fight impossible.
so ...louis won the 1938 re-match? and then in exactly one year later he lost to this same person Schleming? Or did Schleming fight someone else to win the European championship? Can u please elaborate....
...it seems that boxing history is as 'wiry' and complex as 'tennis'. From my understanding Louis was also holding 'a title'(in 1937) after beating Braddock- i.e at the same time as Schmeling won the European championship in 1939-correct?
Louis was the World Champion. The European Championship was a lesser crown.
It would be like the World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies batting it out with the Minor League champs for the Minor League championship. Would that make any sense?

1# this is not a championship
2# Joe destroyed him in the rematch, so much so, no one could ever say Max in in the same calibur of a Joe Louis.

Schmeling gets all the credit in the world for pulling off the victory against the mighty Joe Louis.
These 2 legends epitomize the word "class".

btw...I have an off the topic question... is it true that Galento (1939) beat Nova? ...was it by points?

Why didin't Louis have any appeal or chance to win the European championship as well-was it because he wasn't 'european' boxer ?
