It is a little hard to understand, but I think that Mimiko saved him because he helped her. (if not in real life, then at least in a vision)

but, she saved him with the very thing that he questioned. The jawbreaker that he knew was a sign of death became his sign of life...

Not quite. Have you seen the second movie? Yumi is still possesed, or atthe very least crazy. The police mention in the second movie how she killed him and then killed herself. And it wasn't just Mimiko killing people. At some point, a girl named Lily entered the picture. I really don't understand where Mimiko ended and Lily began, but that's what happens.

it was Mimiko again in the the 3rd. And the end of the first movie? Mimiko suffers from a need to be praised and given constant attention. In the vision Yamashita saves Mimiko so she thinks he may be the one who will stay with her forever, in death. So Mimiko kills him. Of course it didn't last since at the time she was using the image of Yumi, who Yamashita truly cared for. So once the truth was reveled the "relationship" ended leaving Mimi alone again

Lili was the original cause of the curse, but Mimiko modified it and caused her own variation. PAM, from the third movie, is also another variation of Lili's curse, but I think PAM's version stemmed from Mimiko's. I think the strong feelings of hatred and the fact they all were all "different" from the rest of their societies caused the curses to vary. In the second movie it says that the individual's own evil possessed Yumi and that one chick from the second movie to kill their loved ones.

Next both Mitsuko (wearing the appearance of Yumi) and Yamashita are in a place within the realm of Death. By accepting the candy Mitsuko believes Yamashita will stay with her fullifing her need for praise and attention....perhaps forever?

Well, I loved both "One missed call" and "Chakusin Ari", for a while, my ringtone was the "One missed call" ringtone of death, but when I saw "Chakusin Ari" and I was just impressed by this song....the corus being "Goodbye goodbye" I cried a lot, 'cause in the same evening I had a fight with my best friend, so I listened to it a lot...aniway, this song reminds me of my ex best friend that I was ver close of, so I almost cry now....aniway, sooper movies and song ;)

When I watched Chakushin Ari, I was under the impression that he did die and he was in his own personal heaven. She may have smiled, but I believe she was holding a knife and she gave him the candy.. so I guess Yamashita's heaven wasn't extremely good.

You're close. It is a personal heaven, Mitsuko's heaven. While wearing the appearance of Yumi, (who is also dead now) Mitsuko killed Yaashita with the knife, belieiving she found a companion who will satisfy her emotional need for attention and praise.

But it was not Yumi with the knife, it was Mitsuko, the dead little girl, the one who abused her little sister for praise from everyone who did not know better. Yumi was killed by Mitsuko before Yamashita got to her flat. So when Yamashita arrived it was Mitsuko possessing Yumi's body
