WELL, WILLIAM MARSHAL IS RECORDED TO HAVE SCALED A CASTLE WALL UNDER FIRE 'ON A LADDER' AND CLEARED THE RAMPART WITH HIS SWORD! AT THE TIME HE WAS IN HIS 50S, IT WAS THOUGHT AN AMAZING FEAT TO ALL WHO SAW IT.
By the time he'd manage to climb the axes there would of been a small army waiting in the portcullis. And the lever is normally located in the middle of the room with guards locked in on the inside...
Now, I can't say that I know if this would work or not, but there've been a few times when I've been out in the woods and I've used my SOG Tomahawk as a step to get up trees to fell dead limbs. Not with the cutting edge, but there's a spike on back that's just right for that sort of thing, and when dug in it's surprisingly solid.
@cheapestPCrepair Throwing axe ladder would be almost imposible to preforme. It would be possbile if there werent any enemies throwing all kinds of things at those who would climbe on axes that means they would have to do it silently out of enemies sight. In history there was never any recorded axe ladder siege of castles or forts.
@koricory But can it withstand a full grown man, wearing some armor, jumping over a small chasm and landing on it. I really wish that mythbusters would have this as one of their tv myths. thanks for the info. do you throw axes? could you upload a video if you do?
I'm a history buff and when the Danes invaded England (Alfred the great was king of Wessex, the southern part of England), and if they had to assault a palisade they would use axes but they wouldn't have thrown them.
There is a part in one of the Sagas that mentions the "beard" of an axe being used to hook into the top of a rampart and climb it, but I seriously doubt this is possible hahaha.

Why didn't anyone wait where the hole he was climbing into and shot him in the face when if he climbed in. Why was there a hole there anyways?

a two handed wood chopping axe can be thrown into a tree at 6 steps that is stuck in hard enough to climb on.

could this be done? who knows (rhetorically)? but it reminds me a bit of the Bangalore Torpedo scene from Big Red One.

The saxons didn't build stone castles like this. Good film though.

@MoveOnSoulClub True, the castle is French (castle Fort-La-Latte or La Roche Goyon), from the 14th century.

Or, why it's important to....
1) Have a crossbowman in the winch room.
2) Have a locking-clasp on your draw-bridge.

I once climbed a tree with two hatchets, so this seems like it would be possible.

This movie is so laughable. Kirk Douglas, a runty little Jew, playing a Norseman! Hollyweird at its finest.
