this people believe that by doing this, they get rid of their sin, and some do it as a devotion because some miracle happen to them like being cured of incurable disease. this practice is not condoned by the church and only handful of people do this in a small community in central philippines which become an attraction to tourist during holy week.
just so everyone's clear, this isn't approved by the Catholic church. In fact the church is against it, it's an entirely local thing that people do, and while I greatly admire the feeling behind it, I do think they are very, very wrong.
I'm not questioning their faith, I'm questioning their practice. I think I made that pretty clear. I admire the spirit that causes them to do this, but the way they choose to express it detracts from their pious prayer and pulls them away from the true spirit of repentance.
I agree with your analysis of this behavior - I remember seeing the Holy Week flagellations during the spring of 1975 while living at Clark AFB and thinking it to be so sad that the price has already been paid for their sins and yet they beat themselves as though this were not the truth.

it's tradition. all of catholic world in mediaval age practiced this. maybe in contemparary Europe it's not likely that there still could be the people willing to do. but Latin America(maybe Mexico?) snd Philippines stil preserve it. i think that this is so wonderful, because it show us the way Christianity existed before Reformation. a living fossil.....

I live in this place, San Fernando. this culture is great and during holy week it is a tourist attraction specially in Cutud (the place where crucifixion is done). When one of these penitents pass beside your car, your car will be sprinkled with blood, and the road is full of blood. every year I watch this even if it is extremely gore.

Well I am sayign it is not exact he is born on December 25th. The celebration of his birth is based on the Winter Solstice or with a Roman Festival. Well I am a Catholic and in doubt with the celebrations. I am thinking that these celebrations are done to honor and the dates are not exact and not right. Papacy was mentioned before Jesus' ascension. He is the head of the Catholic church. The first pope was Peter. Jesus may be the head of the Church but the Pope may be the human representative on Earth. I am admitting and shocked that some POPES died during SEX whahahaah and that's trivia.

this people believe that by doing this, they get rid of their sin, and some do it as a devotion because some miracle happen to them like being cured of incurable disease. this practice is not condoned by the church and only handful of people do this in a small community in central philippines which become an attraction to tourist during holy week.

just so everyone's clear, this isn't approved by the Catholic church. In fact the church is against it, it's an entirely local thing that people do, and while I greatly admire the feeling behind it, I do think they are very, very wrong.

I'm not questioning their faith, I'm questioning their practice. I think I made that pretty clear. I admire the spirit that causes them to do this, but the way they choose to express it detracts from their pious prayer and pulls them away from the true spirit of repentance.

I agree with your analysis of this behavior - I remember seeing the Holy Week flagellations during the spring of 1975 while living at Clark AFB and thinking it to be so sad that the price has already been paid for their sins and yet they beat themselves as though this were not the truth.

yes I appreciated your work but only Jesus can do this kind of ..... but not a normal person. the bible says once you confess your sin he is just and faithful to forgive you so you dont need to sacrifice this kind of????? just accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and confess w/ your mouth that you are a sinner thats enought.
