Depending at what time of day Steve was measured when his doctor told him he grew recently, he would definitely appear taller in terms of temporary. TFor example the difference between a 9AM appointment and a 4PM appointment could be a half inch to an inch depending on how much he was on his feet, so if that's the case it'd explain it. Just about everyone is slightly taller when they wake up.
