I can't even begin to imagine what it must've been like living 30 years without being able to communicate properly with another person. Wow. You're very strong.
I know this is an old video but if you still respond here, do you find it easier to write on a typewriter or on a keyboard (computer or communicator) that takes less physical pressure to type?
so how do we get into all the group homes across the world to find out if many of the people their can communicate? i deliver items to 16 group homes and i know that two of those people (jeremy and grace) can communicate if given the chance. should i buy them a typewriter? seriously, how do we free these people? They are like convicts in jail who commited no crimes.
these two people are special to me and i buy jeremy a toy truck and when i pull up he comes out and roots through my van taking all my spare change and finds his truck. grace asks about my son whom she has met. i talk to them and while they dont really respond i can see in their eyes that they know exactly what im saying. its frustrating.
I have no idea if a typewriter would help them. We're all individuals and all different. I very nearly took the one apart instead of typing on it. Other staff were worried about leaving me to look at it but the staff who brought it (to do his studies on I think) said leave me be if it was keeping me out of trouble.
it is stories like yours that inspire me and awes me. Having a child recently diagnosed with autism, and seeing non verbal adults with autism find their voice by typing has blown my mind. What our society teaches us about what is "normal" molds us all into some very ignorant thinking, to which I sadly was part of.
Thank you for helping to make people aware of what autism really is.
I hope to see more videos...
