Exactly my point. Modern warfare/ gaming technology is ensuring soldiers won't NEED to be so well prepared for bloody warfare and that they'll already be familiar and skilled in the techniques (and mindset) needed to kill others in 'game-like' virtual simulations. In fact I've read some games are *already* direct equivalents of remote drone piloting software used by military.
It used to be contact sports which trained boys to fight in trenches, now it's gaming teaching boys to pilot RPVs...
I agree that games could help develope the skills needed to use these drones (I wouldn't know for sure, since I've never used one :P)
But what I'm trying to get at is that playing games won't make you into some kind of killer or make the idea of killing sombody any more acceptable. It just doesn't work that way.

It's not just skills it's more subtle yet profound - it's social acceptance and a 'predictive programming'.

Meanwhile, kids now have access to phones, computers, credit cards, and many go around carrying knives and guns.
- For example can you imagine a grown up from the mid 80's taking their old fashioned analog home phone with them on the bus (with a very long extendable lead presumably!) and sitting there painting it different colours, or fitting different ringer bells bought from the local corner shop the day before to make 'trendy' new 'brring, brring' noises, or turning the phone upside down and playing some kind of ball bearing game fitted to the underneath. OK a ridiculous example but d'you see my point?
While I do see your point about adults behaving in what you'd consider a more "child-like" way, I still don't see why you think gaming itself is a form of childish entertainment.

So all I'm saying is that for grown ups to be obsessively playing games all the time, if you take away the actual games and their endless marketing which has helped them become social accepted, all you are really just left with a kind of useless mental illness regression type behaviour at best ....

if there were no benefits, the military would not use video games to train their soldiers. Video games are an "escape", just like reading a book. It DOES benefit the gamer to develop creativity and encounter new virtual environments. People should ALWAYS be growing. To say video games are a regression simply ignores the complex programming and art that goes into them. Show me a child that can make a next-gen video game.
(Oh yeah, missed out part of my answer to your question: gaming kind of allows vulnerable kids to explore virtual versions of the real world while remaining safely at home.
But adults should really be 'playing games for real' -in their real lives, exploring the real world, and interacting with real people. And many people do this instead of gaming!

I've played Mohaa: Spearhead and CS: Source as a "semi-pro". I was the tactical leader of my clans, and it is fun when everyone enjoys good gaming. I only did like 1 training every month, and a couple of wars, it's not like I spend my life playing this :D
I actually won 3 times in a row the 2on2 International League of MOH:SH and we did well playing on casual clan wars. We didn't play in 5on5 leagues because we didn't want to turn the clan into something ultra competitive, taking all the fun out (that's something I leave to geeks and pro gamers).
But I wouldn't call my clans and the clans I played in "newb clans". Far from it, but we didn't play "for real", we were just having fun and just had like 3 or 4 clan wars a month (we do have a life).

Hardly...the only reason that next gen video games get seen as childish is because dumb parents buy them for their kids. Games rated M for mature have adult content, and are for adults. I just know that for me personally, I'll play games during the day and then go out at night. Video games actually become a good conversation starter!

If someone spends 1 hr in evening gaming + 5 hrs at the w/e = 10 hrs per week (many people play way more than that)
Whatever their attitude is they're still giving up 10 precious hrs a week of real life for gaming. (then add TV, webtainment etc).
It's only social acceptance (through advertising!) which makes 10 hrs of gaming seem different to 10 hrs of 'fidgeting' or whatever!

I highly doubt that playing games can ever prepare you for actually killing another human being.
Even the most "realistic" looking games are still look like games. The people are obviously not real and you know that nobody is getting hurt.
The point I'm making is that games don't change your moral views on war or killing. I can see why people from an outside perspective might believe that, but since they don't even play games, they're just talking out their asses.

Exactly my point. Modern warfare/ gaming technology is ensuring soldiers won't NEED to be so well prepared for bloody warfare and that they'll already be familiar and skilled in the techniques (and mindset) needed to kill others in 'game-like' virtual simulations. In fact I've read some games are *already* direct equivalents of remote drone piloting software used by military.
It used to be contact sports which trained boys to fight in trenches, now it's gaming teaching boys to pilot RPVs...

I agree that games could help develope the skills needed to use these drones (I wouldn't know for sure, since I've never used one :P)
But what I'm trying to get at is that playing games won't make you into some kind of killer or make the idea of killing sombody any more acceptable. It just doesn't work that way.
I'm not sure if you disagree with that point or not (tbh I don''t even know what we're argueing about anymore lol :)) but I'm just sayin'.

It's not just skills it's more subtle yet profound - it's social acceptance and a 'predictive programming'.
eg everyone loves cool new military jet fighters at airshows, in Top Gun type movies and in simulation games. But their main reason for existence is to destroy, kill people, or blow people's arms and legs off.
Without airshows and 'positive programming' etc when we saw a fighter fly overhead we would ALL think (and feel) 'Shit- look! a scary advanced flying killing machine'.

Spending all day playing games mimicking and trivializing modern warfare while at the same time apathetically accepting illegal wars (genocide) in the ME with innocent men, women and children being slaughtered or limbs blown off, having deformed radiation babies is not so different than murderous intent TO THOSE AFFECTED.
You'd all feel the same if it was you. It's pretty sick you've got to admit.

And don't forget in the US Obama is now introducing conscription. It's not unreasonable to imagine kids in school now being forced to serve in the military soon (or face jail) and possibly being forced to serve abroad in those 'neverending wars' the ME what with so many dead US soldiers already and military stretched to breaking point.
So these kids might soon be using their gaming skills to remotely pilot drones over Afghanistan or Iraq (or maybe at home) spying on or killing folk.

Yes!
I'm not saying games now aren't being marketed at and played by grown ups, just that they're still essentially a childish entertainment.
Today adults are behaving more like children, playing with games or gadget toys, acting in hedonistic, childish, irresponsible ways (think Bridget Jones, Sex in the City, Friends, reading Harry Potter or just look at 90% of adults' blogs).
Meanwhile, kids now have access to phones, computers, credit cards, and many go around carrying knives and guns.

- For example can you imagine a grown up from the mid 80's taking their old fashioned analog home phone with them on the bus (with a very long extendable lead presumably!) and sitting there painting it different colours, or fitting different ringer bells bought from the local corner shop the day before to make 'trendy' new 'brring, brring' noises, or turning the phone upside down and playing some kind of ball bearing game fitted to the underneath. I'd have to say because beyond the age where hand/ eye coordination and the most basic problem solving skills are being developed (and enjoyed) gaming has little or no connection to real life, the real world, real people - nor does it benefit the gamer (except to give skills for more gaming).
But worse it locks the gamer's perception, mind, thoughts and time into a mode suitable for gaming to the point where you could almost say the game (or programmer) is gaming with the human gamer.... cont>

if there were no benefits, the military would not use video games to train their soldiers. Video games are an "escape", just like reading a book. It DOES benefit the gamer to develop creativity and encounter new virtual environments. People should ALWAYS be growing. To say video games are a regression simply ignores the complex programming and art that goes into them. Show me a child that can make a next-gen video game.

(Oh yeah, missed out part of my answer to your question: gaming kind of allows vulnerable kids to explore virtual versions of the real world while remaining safely at home.
But adults should really be 'playing games for real' -in their real lives, exploring the real world, and interacting with real people. And many people do this instead of gaming!
Every hour spent gaming is an hour less of civilization interacting - and the western world desperately needs MORE real interaction, not less!)

Honestly, most adults who play games do it as a way to kill time when they're bored. They still socialise and live normal lives.
You seem to have this idea that playing games turns you into a social retard but really it's just the same as watching TV, or reading or any other form of entertainment (only WAY more fun, and less educational :))

I've played Mohaa: Spearhead and CS: Source as a "semi-pro". I was the tactical leader of my clans, and it is fun when everyone enjoys good gaming. I only did like 1 training every month, and a couple of wars, it's not like I spend my life playing this :D

I actually won 3 times in a row the 2on2 International League of MOH:SH and we did well playing on casual clan wars. We didn't play in 5on5 leagues because we didn't want to turn the clan into something ultra competitive, taking all the fun out (that's something I leave to geeks and pro gamers).
But I wouldn't call my clans and the clans I played in "newb clans". Far from it, but we didn't play "for real", we were just having fun and just had like 3 or 4 clan wars a month (we do have a life).

your definition of a "child" vs. an adult is subjective...grand theft auto = "childish entertainment"? Hardly...the only reason that next gen video games get seen as childish is because dumb parents buy them for their kids. Games rated M for mature have adult content, and are for adults. To say any form of "entertainment" is childish is ignorant. So is playing drums childish? I know taking a stick and beating something SOUNDS childish when you say it like that...

I wouldn't disagree with everything that you had to say, but I do believe your statements to be inaccurate. I don't see how gaming is any less socially interactive than interacting online, yet here you are making your voice heard via youtube. If anything, usually you have to work together in games whereas often people go trolling on teh interwebs.
I just know that for me personally, I'll play games during the day and then go out at night. Video games actually become a good conversation starter!

feistylilasian - yes I'll admit I generalized, a bit like saying 'fast food is killing the US population' whereas in reality many people eat hamburgers and still stay fit. But then again millions more really are chronically obese and facing health problems and an early death from eating FF. I see gaming as similar.
People have defended gaming as being no different to TV etc - yes! I think TV rots the brain too!
As for the net- it's a wonderful place or a shithole depending where you click :)
