One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite pianists. Meldhau is more than a great jazz artist - he is the voice of this and many past and future generations.
love. my only complaint was the piano fade out at the end... after a bitchin' solo like that, i was yearning for the bass and drums to kick back in for another round and end on some beautiful chord. that said, even with a cliche fade-out, this was beautiful
@ronniepage To each his own. IMO, it's perfect. He clearly respects the original while he makes it own. I've seen Mehldau six times in the Boston area and, wow, "holding back" is so opposite what I've witnessed. The man is a great artist and monumental pianist.
@ronniepage there's this bill evan's interview that to me describes a lot of what brad tries to do. a lot of jazz players get caught up playing really used up riffs and to avoid that you have generate your own ideas. brad throws down an idea and then develops it, kind of like motivic development but maybe not as obvious as in a beethoven sonata or something like that. he really avoids extraneous playing and uses straight musicality. i think that makes him sound like hes "holding back" sometimes
Definition: n. Someone who has clearly spent a lot of time listening to Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, and Herbie Hancock to name a few and drawn all of the right lessons while adding their own unique voice to the jazz vernacular. Sort of the Tarantino of the art form. Kind of looks like Tarantino too.
This piece brings such joy to me every time i listen to it!!! All kinds of emotions arise when i listen to it. Anyone else feel this way??? lol I lovelovelove this song!
love that upbeat lick at the end, sooooo SICK
