Black metal is all about individuality, so therefore it is no "correct way" to do black metal vocals. If what you are trying to do hurt, then find another way to do your vocals, because your voice is obviously not intended for whatever you are trying.

I checked out an illnath song. Are you talking about pitch? Yes in this video I keep my vocals at the same pitch. I noticed illnath goes a little lower and then back up higher again, I am capable of doing that too, however the song I used doesn't really have any pitch changes in the vocals so i followed suit.

Children of Bodom is definitely not black metal... Search "Elgibbor" in the youtube search and watch the video for the song "Darkness will be like morning". That is a great example of black metal vocals. ( the vocals don't start until a little after two minutes into the song)

I also just want to add that I don't know much about the technical terms like "false chords" or "vocal fry"... So black metal vocals may be related to false chords, but I do not know.

Yes black metal vocals are high pitch, but generally, they are a little more shriek-like than Bodom's vocals are... Search for a few black metal bands and you'll see the difference.
