Isn't this "Par le Rang et par l'Opulence"? and not "Salut à la France"? "Salut à la France" is a different one. Thanks for posting this, though. This might be my favorite interpretation of it. It's so pretty! : )
I don't think Miss Battle's attitude was unfounded. She's a perfectionist, as evidenced by her work. She wasn't taken seriously, in part because of her color, but mainly because of her physical beauty. Anyone that beautiful was thought not to have true talent. Lot's of jealousy. Ms Battle's beauty of voice matches her physical beauty....at least. May God continue to bless her.
"in part because of her colour"? I find that utter nonsense: opera audiences judge on singing ability, not by skin colour. Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman and Barbara Hendricks (just to name a few) are well loved singers because of their voices and interpretation.
@stktrd I don't think anyone questions her talent but her attiutude is constantly criticised. Doubtless she was a perfectionist but that doesn't give anyone the right to be as insufferable as she apparently was. Having said which - I do find this piece utterly exquisite.
I adore Kathleen Battle and am skeptical of what those lurid journalists try to tell me about her attitude, but I think that what is unfounded is the assertion that a beautiful opera singer is automatically devalued. Why? Maria Callas, Anna Moffo, Kiri Te Kanawa, and many more of the most beloved sopranos have also been revered for their "physical beauty."
@stktrd All the contrary; due to her beauty and her fantastic singing, she was selling out all her shows extremely easily. When all the opera houses (starting with the MET) sacked her, they renounced an extremely secure source of revenue. Her attitude must have gotten to a point where it could not be supported anymore for the Met to take such an extreme action, especially when regarding the consequences.
Wow! This is really quite supurb. My favorite in this role will always be Dame Joan, but Battle is one heck of a singer, her tone is so pure, and her coloratura is ravishing. It's a shame she had to be such an arrogant...yeah...anyway, simply beautiful.
Beautiful indeed! I have a live recording from when she did Maria with San Francisco opera... I will post it when I learn how to make videos on Windows Movie Maker! LoL
that would be wonderful. I did not even know she got a chance to perform this opera. I knew she was working on it at the time of her dismissal. But knowing that there is live footage/recording of her in this role gives me chills. I cant wait for your upload!
splendid!

Check out a portuguese soprano called Ana Paula Russo. She´s amazing. This ária singed by KB is also very good.
