Anyone who doubts the faithfulness of the Irish Catholics can learn much from the words of this song. Our ancestors were punished, exiled, tortured and killed for their faith. They never gave it up. My Grandparents left Ireland when newlyweds to avoid financial persecution as my Grandpa wanted to provide for his family well. Within 5 years he was a self made man on the Brooklyn waterfront and not persecuted for his Faith. The perseuction has started here in the USA..with radical secularists.
in Isaiah(42:1) 1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
So there is no more obvious statement than this one. As God has clarified this truth that he is a slave of God and God has placed his spirit on him to support him like the other prophets.
An inspiring song to any (in particular) Irish person, dont have to be a bible basher (no disrespect meant) but it brings out the proud Catholic side of any Irish person so I think anyway............
Even though I'm not a very good practicing catholic this song has a special place in my heart because it was sung as my mother's coffin was being taken from the church, at my request, She had walked in the procession on the sunday even though very ill and was dead the next wednesday so I thought it relevant to her because she had a lot of faith in spite of all the scandals that emerged but I also know that she was very disappointed with all of it. Rest in peace Mum.
Great singer but by FAR the worst version or melody, compared to the more popular "Faith of our Fathers," that most folks know. I saw Frank in Concert in Fort Worth, in what I believe was his last (or one of his very last) Concerts he ever performed. It was magic! Wish he had of sung the more popular version of "Faith of our Fathers."
Not nearly as good as it was when bellowed by fifteen hundred coal miners and their families packed into the church at Cessnock, sadly the only good memories I have of my catholic upbringing is the Hyms and the latin mass
A truly inspiring song I used to love at school. But how many of my ancestors really did die for this utter shit? Dungeon, fire and sword, for a God that does not exist and a Pope who just wanted power
I know this hymn is set to another tune ... but, to me, this is the ONLY melody for this particular hymn. I'm listening to this on Holy Thursday night 2011 ... and Faith Of Our Fathers is invariably one of the hymns I sing softly to myself at our "watch night" vigil with Christ on this night. Even though I didn't make the vigil tonight, I am still having my own vigil here at home - with this hymn. Thank you for making this possible for me :) Happy and Blessed Easter.

When I have doubts, as I often do; I think of this hymn, in particular this version which I sang as a school child in the 1950s.
