    I think Montserrat is the voice that will be remebered for centuries. I have to agree that the best soprano is Callas but Callas was a great artist and only Montserrat is the greatest singer.Great Montserrat, and this aria with her voice is amazing, the best version,the best control of the voice.

    I can't imagine a soprano that can sing this aria better than Montserrat; her voice is wonderfull and her technique is example for other singers.

  • May be its not a compliment, but Caballe is so far from mezzo as Netrebko from good singing. Can u imagine Caballe as Carmen??? Ridiculous! Even though Carmen is a soprano, but the closest one to mezzo, right?

  • Well, yes, nobody says so, It's just that I'm used to have in my mind the light soprano color, see? I think the real soprano color is very much lighter than dramatic sopranos who all sound mezzo to me: Caballé it's considered leggero-dramatico soprano, so, she can sing deep and light as well, and that's what I wanted to say, nothing else, that compared to other sopranos, she can be very dramatic, that's something that Popp or Cotrubas couldn't do, is not so?

  • I said, SOMETIMES she sounds EVEN like... and with sometimes I mean not often at all, don't misunderstand, she's the greatest soprano... many sopranos sound like mezzo sometimes (Callas, Dimitrova, Price, Fleming), and meny mezzos sound like soprano sometimes too(Berganza, Bartoli, Kozena), because of an specific moment of interpretation for example or a musical piece that demands it, and that's a truth isn't it? it isn't a barbarism at all...

  • to say that a soprano sounds like a mezzo is one of the greatest compliments a soprano can recieve because it means she has beautifuly developed middle voice. And yes Montsi had a beautiful and well developed middle.

  • Well you can hold your breath and wait, but it's already been sung "out of this world" by Ponselle, Callas, Caballe, and Sutherland. By the way, Caballe's voice is probably the furthest thing away from "dark" that you can possibly get. I have a feeling you're not a well person.

  • yes, I love their versions, I just say ther is going to be even better ones. Don't take personally what I say, is not about you, not even about caballé. What I ment using the word "dark" is that she has a deep voice that sometimes sound even like a mezzo and I prefer light sopranos like dessay or kirkby.

For those of us who teach vocal education it is truly painful to read or listen to a cheap criticism like "not the best voice in itself." The truth is that when a person has the voice of Mrs. Caballé, it takes someone like Bellini himself to produce a critique that makes sense.

What made them so great was the use of what they had.     Anyways, she's wonderful! Not the best voice in itself, but the use of it..! It's magic - she knew what she could accomplish with her voice, and created wonders so many times!

  • It is you. You are interested and that is fine. But, untill you are taught how to listen stick to ...oh I don't know what...follow the lighting, the sets, the staging. If you would like a little action in your life; go back stage after an opera and drop one of your typical comments on a stage manager or a set designer no, no, better yet find an production with a choreographer.
