caballe was never an actress, though her vocal expression is exceptionally touching... i almost burst in tears when she says ''...ma... punir-lo...'' beautiful
Now listen! Even if you hear the short except between the Casta Diva and the Cabaletta, Fine Al Rito, this would be enough to prove her greatness in itself, and particularly in that role! I love the comment on her aerodynamics!
Caballe was one of the great Normas (other than Callas; in fact you might say she replaced Calla's Norma)...her big beautiful voice had everything just right for Norma....this was her greatest success
Caballé is the finest performer of this aria. Nobody can control de voice as she does. Said with all respect to great divas like Callas and Sutherland.
Thank you, Onegin, for adding this. Your archives must be inexhaustible.
I don´t get the bitching about "not being the perfect voice...", this is simply magnificent. I wish I were lucky enough to EVER come across a Norma like her live on stage.
I think Montserrat is the voice that will be remebered for centuries. I have to agree that the best soprano is Callas but Callas was a great artist and only Montserrat is the greatest singer.Great Montserrat, and this aria with her voice is amazing, the best version, the best control of the voice.
I can't imagine a soprano that can sing this aria better than Montserrat; her voice is wonderfull and her technique is example for other singers.
Es admirable la cantidad de material que expones, soy de Argentina y me gustaria intercambiar mails ya que dia a dia me sumerjo mas en el mundo de la lirica, y veo que tu eres un apasionado tambien.
May be its not a compliment, but Caballe is so far from mezzo as Netrebko from good singing. Can u imagine Caballe as Carmen??? Ridiculous! Even though Carmen is a soprano, but the closest one to mezzo, right?
Onegin65 eres fantastico!!!! sin duda youtube no sería lo mismo sin ti... todo esto que nos ofreces es increible... me paso horas con tus videos!!! Gracias y gracias
Well, yes, nobody says so, It's just that I'm used to have in my mind the light soprano color, see? I think the real soprano color is very much lighter than dramatic sopranos who all sound mezzo to me: Caballé it's considered leggero-dramatico soprano, so, she can sing deep and light as well, and that's what I wanted to say, nothing else, that compared to other sopranos, she can be very dramatic, that's something that Popp or Cotrubas couldn't do, is not so?
I said, SOMETIMES she sounds EVEN like... and with sometimes I mean not often at all, don't misunderstand, she's the greatest soprano... many sopranos sound like mezzo sometimes (Callas, Dimitrova, Price, Fleming), and meny mezzos sound like soprano sometimes too(Berganza, Bartoli, Kozena), because of an specific moment of interpretation for example or a musical piece that demands it, and that's a truth isn't it? it isn't a barbarism at all...
to say that a soprano sounds like a mezzo is one of the greatest compliments a soprano can recieve because it means she has beautifuly developed middle voice. And yes Montsi had a beautiful and well developed middle.
Well you can hold your breath and wait, but it's already been sung "out of this world" by Ponselle, Callas, Caballe, and Sutherland. By the way, Caballe's voice is probably the furthest thing away from "dark" that you can possibly get. I have a feeling you're not a well person.
yes, I love their versions, I just say ther is going to be even better ones. Don't take personally what I say, is not about you, not even about caballé. What I ment using the word "dark" is that she has a deep voice that sometimes sound even like a mezzo and I prefer light sopranos like dessay or kirkby.
you didn't pay attention that I said I like it very much or the fact that I didn't say anything aganist anybody unlike you who are very disrespective to me even that you don't know me, you just saw what you wanted to see and assumed that I'm not able to comment and that I'm not a well person... mmmmmm, would you make me a favor and think about it please? this is not right at all...
This is not her best one, I'm not a big fan of dark sopranos, but this is not bad at all, in fact, is very good. I'll say it over and over again, the person who can sing this "out of this world" music is not known yet, someday the casta diva will be singed has it takes to be singed...
If your selection of favorites is any indication of your knowledge of music, you've really got no business commenting on anything even remotely related to Opera--and you're 18.
And I suppose that you, and only you, will be the one to finally verify that that angelic soprano has finally come along? WHAT PRETENTIOUS CRAP... at least now I know where the opera queens go to die.
Yes, operamagnus, it is you! The only thing "off", here, is your comment. For those of us who teach vocal education it is truly painful to read or listen to a cheap criticism like "not the best voice in itself." The truth is that when a person has the voice of Mrs. Caballé, it takes someone like Bellini himself to produce a critique that makes sense.
Ehem, well, nice to see we have some maturity here. Here voice was never the best, neither was Joan Sutherland's, Victoria de los Angeles', Birgit Nilsson's and so on. What made them so great was the use of what they had. But okay, you can keep your straight forward way of thinking to yourself, people are obviously unable to detect a single flaw in their favourite singers.
Now you've just been moved to the moron category. Anyone, anyone, who is stupid enough to say that Sutherland and Nilsson's voice were "never the best" has no business being here commenting, or listening to Opera. You are truly a senseless imbecile.
Would you people please try to look away from the "a perfect voice exsists" way of thinking? I LOVE Caballe, Sutherland, Nilsson and all of the other singers, probably just as much as you do, but the point is they were never perfect. Perfection does not exsist, it's as simple as that.
hehehe, yes, is a fact that people is obviously unable to detect a single flaw in their favourite singers, though, I think that what these ones you cite had, was not bad at all, is not supernatural but is very very good, plus the use they gave to their voices... thanks for saying that people is blindfold in love with their singers enough like to not want to hear the truth of their flaws, even that a flaw is not a bad thing, it's what makes us human...
I did say she knew how to work wonders with her voice, didn't I? So please, keep your vocal "education-ness" to yourself and start reading what you see, and listening, trying to understand something. Thank you.
beautiful! i thought bartoli's version was the best. but i'm thinking of revising my earlier stance. beautiful emotional and clean rendition of casta diva
Anyways, she's wonderful! Not the best voice in itself, but the use of it..! It's magic - she knew what she could accomplish with her voice, and created wonders so many times!
It is you. You are interested and that is fine. But, untill you are taught how to listen stick to ...oh I don't know what...follow the lighting, the sets, the staging. If you would like a little action in your life; go back stage after an opera and drop one of your typical comments on a stage manager or a set designer no, no, better yet find an production with a choreographer.
Oh my, a mature one. I still don't like how she seems off beat in the coloratura between the verses, and if you have a problem with that, keep it to yourself.
