@viperdude281 I was also suprised, i expected 2:30. A man with this physical condition --> and than 3:00 was not a good time.Seems totally different bicycle racing and running.
I think what people don't realize is that before he really got into cycling and competing in the Tour De France he was a marathon runner as well as a triathlete and he even won some awards for best young triathlete.
Maybe Lance would have won Ironman but without EPO and/or blood transfusion he would never be able to climb mountain with real climber, so he would never have won a single TDF. Of course he would have continued to do well on classics or on race without high mountain.
too bengals above an ironman is something you have to be quality all round your not going too accomplish by being good at a bike its a start but it doesnt get you through the 3 mile swim and the marathon after a hundred mile cycle!
no matter what condition he was in, running a sub 3 in a marathon is amazing, that is running a 7:00 mile... 26 times... he is one of the best althetes of our time and maybe the best
It's funny, I was talking to my cross country coach about Lance's marathon. I guess he looked real awkward running, because he's a bicyclist so his quads were huge lol. He was quoted saying that was the most pain he'd been in during a race but he just said he had to finish it. But yes he definitely is one of the best athletes of this generation.
I'm on my bike trainign 5 days a week, and whenever I transition into running its horrible. The body you build as a cyclist is much different than one needed to run marathons. I hate running..
ecemaml you are an really stupid idiot! It seems that you have no idea of cycling and running! That is so different! And hey you could say many things about how great you can run! But thats only words! Lance is a legend and you are an little freak!!!!
Good Lord. There isnt a single elite marathoner that could finish a single stage of the Tour. I promise you, not a single stage, let alone win the whoel thing. 7 times. Ecemami, you're an idiot.
hey there is a difference between cyclist and runners. He has a lot more muscle mass than most runners, and its just for a good cause who cares if he ran 23.2 miles in just under 3 miles. To me thats amazing.
Also, the way I know you have never run a marathon is the way you would talk like that and not respect the effort or feel excited by someone with Lance's notoriety taking the time to run in the largest, most public race in the world. Go read his post race interviews, they were so humble and made me as a runner respect him even more. I hope he runs it again next year!
Umm no way he did awesome especially for the training he was able to get in. the longest he had ever run was 16 miles yet he completed the marathon in under 3 hours. In addition, the fact that he is an elite cyclist means that he doesn't have a runners body, and your body type means a lot in a race that is that long.
Loser! So many legends as pacemakers, not taking the drinks himself and just 3 hours... Pretty poor for an elite cyclist. I'm only an amateur runner but I'm better than him and that without any help.
Loser? Never having run the distance in his life, even with pace-makers, sub-three is a massive effort. I compete in cycle races and marathons, and believe me, all the cycling in the world doesn't help your marathon time. In fact, the more time I spend training for cycle events, the harder it is to run. The guy is a legend. Who are you to throw words like 'loser' at him? Fool.
Lance is a better runner than you are a cyclist.. Hell in triathlons, he can easily run a sub 6 pace per mile. So you really cant compare yourself to him..
I think his fastest is like 2:46

Hmm I would think he would finish with a better time.

Wow, kudos to him. He looked like he was in some serious pain there. Running's not as nice to the bones as cycling.

When i was younger he was a triathlon champ ccompeting against guys much older than him. He was to young so he had to doctor his birth certificate.

after seeing this( a sub 3 marahton) it really makes you wonder if Lance could have won an ironman competition. You know he would dominate the bike.

Agreed. I'm a cyclist at a national competitve level, and whenever I have to run (for a bus normally) it is horrible!

I concur. Running is so different, 3 hours in my book is pretty damn good anyway! I couldn't do it and I consider myself to be pretty fit.
