What's the trick to making those lower strings sound clear with plenty of note definition? Is it about your amp settings and/or the type of pickups you're using?
The jargon is, "there is so much unexplored musical territory on a 4-string bass." I think I can safely say that, "there is SO MUCH MORE unexplored territory on ERB's." Simply breathtaking Eric!
So beautiful-- like a bowed instrument in places-- wow, I can't figure that out except maybe for the pickups but they're like no pickups I've ever heard!!!
@PlayTheVideoAlready The sound, and having to put your fingers on the "frets" instead of just behind them, and being able to have a more in-depth vibrato technique.
@PlayTheVideoAlready it hasn't any fret on it, they're painted, just markers, because intonation is much harder and way more complex than in a fretted instrument. It hasn't the same percussive approach but more melodic, as you can hear (you do, right?) the sound is way softer and pretty much like a cello or a doublebass. its language is different because of its melodic and expressive possibilities it kind of gets a more melodically-relevant role within a musical piece.
@SiantDread It can be lower or higher: the heaviest gauge stock strings to come with my Conklin GT-7 were .127. This suits the B0 pretty well; I would not recommend tuning lower at that gauge. Conklin DO offer low C# strings .194 gauge and .165 gauge low F# strings but the tuning on the bass when it arrived was B0 E1 A1 D2 G2 C3 F3.
eric..le tue melodie entrano nel sangue e riaffiorano dalla pelle increspata! sei unico e grande..riesci a toccare le corde del basso e le corde del cuore...magnifico
wow awesome. I have the Conklin groove tools 7 string and this looks like the fretless version. that is some great sound you got there, nice phrasing. 10/10
Those are just lines on the fingerboard, not frets, and he's hitting the harmonics so that they don't sound all the way to get that octave effect. That's a legit vid man, fretless bass rules. Especially ones by Conklin.
And he doesn't hit his harmoics all the time. When he plays the theme for the 2nd time, you can clearly hear there's the same note on a lower octave added to the one he's actually playing.
Not saying the vid isn't legit, just that it's not just the bass, there's plenty of effects on it... not htat's it's a bad thing
Well, just from the dimensions of the bass guitar, it is going to make that synth type sound. They all sound like that give or take some. The frets really do change the song.
This isn't a super-hard piece, but damn he makes it sound good. His harmonic technique is first-rate; it is so hard to get a harmonic ring like that without bumping the string and making it stop. Fricking awesome. I have played for over 25 years and Eric is one of the most versatile bassist that I have ever seen! Those that have seem this should look at his other videos. I am just fucking amazed! And, if one more person asked if it is a fretless because they see the lines, I will choke you!
"4 strings does just fine?"...sure it does, as does 5, 6, whatever's right for the music you're playing. Stop being so insecure and go practice (your 4 string, 5 string, or whatever's right for your music)...don't be intimidated by other's musicality.
