  • This song sad the story behind it but fav song:)

  • this was my highschool anthem time flys children

  • 90's music and the bands, some are gone but the music still lives on savour each song

  • The radio DJs in my city once said it was about a girl that the had a threesome with the lead singer and his best friend. Then, she committed suicide. Not sure if it's true, of course. Love the song, no matter the meaning. :)

  • @paperkite03 Its not a love song. Its a loss song.

  • @paperkite03 if u look up the meaning on google u can find the meaning. basically he goes out with this girl and she commits suicide because her baby was lost before child hood. and the singer is saying that he cant b held resposible we were so young.

not really what u wanna here 4 such a good song...but thats what it means

  • Thay played at my church last week :)

  • I cant ever hear this song enough

  • Damn this takes me back. It's still as powerful now, as it was then.

  • so when did this come out?

  • @tntimmy1996 It came out in 92 and then redone by the verve pipe in 95 and again by a different producer in 96. They remade the same 3 different times according to wiki

  • One of the great 90s tunes. The soothing/dramatic background bass guitar is one of the best!!

  • I ave been looking for this song for the past 12-15 years. yay!!! I could not remember it. Wow, thanks!!!! It was played at my High School when someone died in a car crash.

  • This is sooo flippin beatiful

  • do you have the karaoke version "non vocal"... music only...

  • @nodashesjustdots um no. i think thats just you. but i could be wrong

  • okay this song is not about cheating or killing a baby its about his gf over doesing

  • @mkaylady76 This song is about his girlfriend getting an abortion and then over dosing

  • 8 people have no souls

  • Comment removed

  • 8 people must have never been 13

  • @88CRXa6 That is a silly comment, and I was 11yrs when this came out AND it was one of my FAVORITE songs when it came out! Still remains a favorite from the 90's. :)

    God Bless ~Amy

  • This song makes me sad. I was just coming of age (21) when this song came out. It brings back some very painful memories. Love the song though.

  • Its not until years later that you realise what you did not know when you were young, by then its too late. Much older now, but back then we were only freshmen.. Cool song..

  • I always picture her getting pregnant because of a one night stand. That's the story I get.

  • 8 people took a weeks worth of Valium and slept.

  • to:who ever the fuck pushed that dislike button... im gonna hunt you down and kill you

  • anybody kno wat this song is about

  • love this song!!

  • With all our advancements towards womens rights, we have trampeled mens rights. He gets a woman pregnant and has no say if his baby lives or dies, that is up to the mother.Even if he wants the baby, we look at it as the womans choice even though he had a part.Nobody seems to think maybe fathers feel loss too or should at least have an imput on the decison of abortion.

  • @mydoggeez So your solution is to force a woman for months to carry a baby (and all the "fun" of it) she does not want, for a man cause he was able to fertilize an egg inside her? The carrying around of a baby for many months is a burden. Many if not most women take on this burden because they like the end result. If you want a kid try planning it with a woman that also wants one! Pumping your seed into a woman is not a burden. (this is from a male)

  • @hellasow However, the mother could want one, then halfway along decide not to, even if the father still does. This is an arguement that never gets solved, unfortunately. If you don't like it, don't do it. I personally see it as murder. My honest view. If they have it, it should be within the first phases, because now one can have an abortion in the 3rd trimester. It's obvious the baby has rights, because if a doctor hurts the baby on delivery, he or she gets sued. But, WHEN do they have rights.

  • @Skabur123 You say ..."However, the mother could want one, then halfway along decide not to, even if the father still does" Yes the woman at anytime while carrying it should have the right to end it cause it is her body and she has to deal with it...If the guy changes his mind he does not want it, too bad its not his body. "Rights" is an over used word.."rights" are what is giving to someone. You have a "right" to live because people will protect that right.

  • @Skabur123 Almost everyone will accept the "right" of the "born child" to live. The unborn baby "right" is only supported by a fringe and too many of them are borderline crazy. I am not going to put women on trial for having late term abortion for murder or anything else...count me out on any support of that...When the kid is born i will give him rights!

  • @hellasow Im not arguing your point, Im just stating both sides that are argued. Sad, really. Won't ever be solved. Whats the difference between a late term baby, and a baby that has JUST popped his or her head/legs out? Just being inside?

  • @Skabur123 It would simplify everything if it was born or not born. No forcing a women to do something she does not want to with her body. This is my last comment on this subject i don't want to continue to fill the comment section with this............This is GREAT SONG

  • @hellasow Im not arguing your point, Im just stating both sides that are argued. Sad, really. Won't ever be solved. Whats the difference between a late term baby, and a baby that has JUST popped his or her head/legs out? Just being inside? All the anti-abortion people who argue adoption, need to be fighting to improve the adoption agencies

  • dear youtube,

delete the dislike button on this song and replace it with a X5 replay button

  • this song has a really special meaning to me.. and always will. <3

  • i think is a song tht means something different to everyone tht hears it, you kno

  • According to the Verve Pipes' FAQ, guitarist and lead singer Brian Vander Ark wrote the song in 1991 about the guilt he felt from his ex-girlfriend committing suicide. According to an external interview site, the girl in the song is based on Vander Ark's girlfriend who really had an abortion. However, she didn't actually commit suicide like in the song, which Vander Ark said was poetic license.

  • The lead singer slept with the girl. She was dating a different band member. She got pregnant and killed herself.

  • i think that its just better to not think of the story behind it. its good to know it but then just let it go. its kinda easier to handle listening to the song that way too.

  • One correction if I may. It's "stomp a baby's breath."

As in the flower, if that seems abstract. :)

  • @dmurphman20 It was freshmen year of college :p

  • When I hear this song, the tears come on their own.

  • i love this song. i relate it more to my highschool freshman year though.

  • this song is actually about his and his best freinds freshman year of college and they met a girl and they both were fking her and she got pregnant and they stoped fking wit her and she killed herself

  • @dmurphman20 it was their freshman year of high school

  • @hurlock6426 oh..

  • @dmurphman20 lol

  • shoe full of rice, no is saying that there was no wedding. Stop a baby's breath is becuase the girl got an abortion. and fetuses do breathe and cry and hiccup and sneeze.

  • Best Song In The World <3

  • My freshmen year was alot like that last year.

  • love this song sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much

  • Whatever it actually meant for the lead singer, we are just glad we belong to the era when the song came out. Not to over analyse the lyrics, we just decided to play it, every line just takes you back,..FRIENDS... enjoy this video response from us and savour each memory.. :)

  • @bloodyforeigner29 he said he wrote it about his high school girlfriend, who had an abortion "Stop a babys breath and a shoe full of rice." and about his friend "his girl took a weeks worth of valium and slept and now he's guilt-stricken, sobbing with his head on the floor". And sometimes it helps to know the meaning of a song, it's all about regret and heartache, and what might have been.

I think everybody has felt those things.

  • @bloodyforeigner29 i like this video..so who carez wat MixxedMusic said lol

  • I just googled this song and the lead singer, who wrote the song, said he wrote it about when he was a freshman in college and his girlfriend got an abortion. He said all of the song is true except for the part about her taking valium to commit suicide. He also said that the "I" and the "his" in the song are confusing, but they both refer to himself.

  • @sunshiner13 wow. thats great. I understand wanting to know the inspiration of a song, but just feel it. feel it

  • songfacts(doht)com/detail(dojt)php?id=2474 will tell you

  • does any1 know what this song is actually about, seems to me that everyone has there own "idea"

  • the song is about how a girl wuz dating the lead singer and cheated on him with one of the other band members. she couldnt choose between the 2 so she killed herself and when they found out insteat of being mad at each other they decided to write this song to help with the pain and everything instead

  • @marissa2011ify did u even listen to the song...?

  • This song makes me so sad!

  • What crap lyrics - I can't be held responsible, she was touching her face'...Hahahaha! Typical Yank shite!

  • another good abortion-rock song of the era was Brick by the Ben Folds Five.

  • good job on the lyrics, though the correct song title is The Freshman. Brings a poetic vibe. Very good song at the time. Good times, great oldies.

  • This is an extremely deep and insightful song. The absolute, overwhelming arrogance of youth, finally realized and condemned with the venomous, self-loathing epithet "we were merely freshmen..."

    Amazingly spectacular writing.

  • i love this song cause it can mean so many things to different people and no one explanation is ever really "right". unless they released an official explanation, then just disregard this post lol

  • @joejoesasleepyhead they did...

  • @raijin57 no matter what it's really about, isn't a little severe to say they 'aren't men enough'? idk, just seems harsh for young ppl who dont know what to do in those situations. it just seems like something very unfortunate, but to place blame wont help anything. just a thought.

  • FOUND YOU...son of a .....

    Awesome song!

  • the worst thing is when you watch these things happen and there is nothing you can do about it.

  • This song makes me wanna cry...

  • The song's not about a girl getting pregnant then having an abortion, It's about how they couldn't commit to relationships and how immature they were and now realize it. One guy ran off from his wedding, and another guy just left his girl and tried to forget about her.

  • @hankk12345 Actually, abortion is what the song is about!! And the rest of what you stated too <3. Brad Vander Ark wrote this song. (the singer) about his girlfriend. It is all true except her suicide--which he stated "poetic license" in several interviews but does not talk about much. I am 21 but have loved this song for as long as I can remember. It is so intense and emotional. I recommend a simple Google search for the hell of it.

  • heard teh song on the OTH season 5 premiere eoisode endingLOVE HOW MOVING IT IS xxoo

  • i remember the first time i heard this song.. love it (:

  • im only 13 n iv known this song sins i waz 2

  • it's simple and a well known fact that this song is about ABORTION... do your research! thanx.

  • @ike1981s Haha I just wrote a note to someone about that. I think people are slightly naive and do not want to look at controversial topics, but remember art is for interpretation. WAY to have your research down. My English professor just said that an author that GIVES the meaning to his work is bad, he should only share the though process! Vander Ark gives the meaning in each line of his song--I think he is an exception among others.

  • i dedicate this song to katie le grand the whore that killed our family before it could even come to pass yes i still think about you and how you promised us our dreams then ruined your self spilling it all in the cracks of our flaws

  • This was on my mind all day and I just had to listen to it as soon as I got home.

It's one of those songs that's on the radio a lot but you don't remember the person who sings it, and it's timeless. I never listened to the lyrics before, it's so sad.

  • I know this song is about pregnancy...but it reminds me of my ex. I never got her pregnant but this song just reminds me of the pain we put each other through and how we can't even look at each other because the reminders of pain and suffering. Freshmen in college ironically so we're still young. I consider myself an adult but I still have moments of immaturity and I still don't know what the hell life is supposed to be about.

  • I wish I could hear you sing this one more time... RIP Greg.

  • This song is...... breathtaking.... my dad used to always listen to it around me

  • i looove this song soo much. the frist time i heard it, it was in a video someone made about the movie bully now everytime i hear it i think of that movie. you can look it up if you want (if you have ever seen the movie before) this song fits that video perfectly. look up larry clarkes bully the freshman :)

  • just wanted to post one see what i mean im no good with computers

  • my girlfriend is still my girlfriend but has feelings for her x im 300,000 mills away so i can only listen i love her and it sucks i cant get my point to her always remember communication is only 7 % spoken word 33 % auditory and 55% visual i know im off a little but by small numbers it really is 7% i know that 100% no matter what 80 % of attempts will fail or give the wrong idea

  • and it is all so so importnt you can say we do what we can but dont lie to yourself

if you have time to care about somthing you have abillity to help it aswell lol this was a lone long typing thing lol ill tell you y

  • mend our own lives its not easy getting back when you think you are down we just have to try as hard as we can the more you try the easier it becomes to make the right desissions but for this progress we need to use patients wait for the right time but dont let it pass dont freet if you miss it its never to late just dont try try try you have to get it pice of mind is a long path

  • i like the song in m o;pinnion its to sad about how ppl loose in life and cant get a brake considering it is to late but it is never ever to late we are man we can be week we loose our motivation to fix and

  • i love this song.. =)

  • everyone they came to my school to perform cause our school money today they rocked they did there family ambull

  • I love this song it reminds me of so much. <3 this song has what some songs dont have. Meaning. It means something. When they sing it they realize what they did. Thats why i love it. Its a song with meaning. Not like those new songs that mean nothing just something to listen too. <3

  • The singer gets his girl to have an abortion so he doesn't have to marry her.

And his friend apparently had a breakup with his girl and went away for a week to get over her...and she overdoses on drugs and dies.

And in the end, they can't believe they acted that way and expected no consequences from their actions and now are feeling the full effects later.

  • I like all the new music.. but I have to say.

    Best. Song. Ever. Made..

All Things considered. I'm a Freshman(: haha

    Ironic much? XD

  • I'm from Kalamazoo, and all these years later, I'm still very proud of this band. They had a #1 with this song. Love you, Brad and Brian V. The Dutch do rock.

  • valium is an antianxiety drug.. generic name is diazepam.

  • what does' she was touching her face mean'? and what is a freshman? and what does valium do?

  • all the song means was the guys friend broke up with his girlfriend and she was so in love with him she got to depressed and killed herself oh and she was also pregnant with his baby and she killed it

  • Actually the singer fell in love with his best friend's (the guitarist's) girlfriend and slept with her. He knocked her up. She aborted. Even so it wasn't enough for the guitarist and he got away to forget about her after breaking up with her. Abandoned by both of them, the girl becomes so completely heartbroken that she committed suicide. "I can't be held responsible." is him declaring it is not his fault -- we were merely freshmen. Since then, for the longest time they refused to date.

  • "touching her face" means doing cocaine

  • OOOOH... LOL.... I misinterpretted "touching her face"... now the "rice" part makes perfect sense. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • @AlexandraKass a freshman is someone in 9th grade or the first year of high school or collage

  • alexandra, it's relatively easy to overdose on Valium... and simple to surpass the "calm" wave it brings over you... and slip into a sleep that'll never wake you. a freshman is either a 9th grader, or a first year college student. not sure... I think she kept hiding her face is shame... the tears...

  • It's a nice idea...but the lyrics presented are not entirely correct.

  • This song brings back soooo many memories........<3 I love this song so much =']

  • this song is really intense. btw its not just about one couple people. its about two couples. the first verse the guy runs from weding. second verse his friend breaks up wit girl she kills hersle. rest of song is about how they arent men enough to admit partial fault at least due to immaturity

  • @raijin57 you may be right...however it's music...and it can mean different things to different people.

  • @raijin57 its actuly one cuple, his girl got pregnet, almost married but she got an abortion and the wedding was off, she later killed herself becouse if it,

  • @raijin57 Actually this song is about abortion... The singers girl got prego before they were freshen and she had an abortion...

  • @raijin57 thats not what its about, its about a couple that had a child but had it killed in the woom, sorry i cant remember the word, but it doesnt matter what the song is about as long as you get the message

  • great song!

  • a shoe full of rice is like something some people have at weddings its supossed to be good luck so when he says "stopped a babies breath and a shoe full of rice" he means aborted a baby and stopped a wedding...

  • babies breath is the white flower on a crousage. for a dress. I.E. stop the wedding and the rice for good luck.

  • at 0:35 what dos he mean when he says "shoe full of rice"?

  • this song is about his friends girl getting pregnant.. they talked her into getting an abortion because they thought it was the "smart" thing to do. It drove her to commit suicide by taking Valium and now they are older and realize how young and dumb they were...

  • @rush2252 so she killed herself, and now they're older? That makes sense. Bud it's about two different couples The first is true the singer had a girlfriend freshman year and she got pregnant and he talked her into having an abortion. The second verse was his best friend( this part isn't true ) he had a girlfriend he left her and went a away for a little bit and while he was gone she killed herself using valium. And now the two friends are older and regret what they did to the girls.

  • @rush2252 , they were dumb for taking valium. Kid those days...

  • @rush2252 i dont think so lol

  • @rush2252 wow thats tragic. is it true?

  • @kellyloveswes09Not the suicide. Some say it was just a so the band could say that the song isn't the real event. Some say it means she was dead on the inside.

  • @Cocobunny911 Probably, it does leave you feeling dead inside.

  • @kellyloveswes09 or at least, that is what i've gathered from my "research." Wikipedia, various fan sights, and some supposed quotes.

  • @Cocobunny911 yeah that makes sence.. thanks :P

  • @kellyloveswes09 :p I spend waaayyyy too much time looking into these things. I've gotten the meaning of everything from the music video of "Never Too Late" by Three Days Grace to the phrase "Hail Eris."

  • @Cocobunny911 lol its good to have some knowlage about the songs u like :P

  • @chrisSo91 "Stopped a baby's breath" and the part where it opens up saying "When I was young I knew everything"

  • @tisvana18 Fetuses don't breathe? Baby's breath is a kind of flower, found at wedding, i'm pretty sure the line is "stomping babies breath", going with the wedding thing again. Idk, I suppose you could reach for the abortion interpretation, but that seems awfully heavy-handed for such a subtle, powerful song.

  • @chrisSo91 Fetuses do breathe. xD They breathe the fluid of the amniotic sac infused with oxygen in the womb. And in the earlier weeks of pregnancy fetuses have gills. Sooo.

But I agree with the lyrics, with the "stomping baby's breath," as it goes better with the "shoe full of rice," indicating a wedding. Abortion doesn't fit.

  • @tisvana18

The lyric is actually stomping baby's breath. Baby's breath and rice are used in wedding ceremonies so it's simply a line about marriage/commitment.

  • @rush2252 this song is actually about how the singer of this band was in love with a girl and she cheated on him with the gutairest and when she couldnt choose between the two of them she killed herself and instead of getting mad at each other they made a song about it. this song has a lot of meaning

  • @marissa2011ify no its not look at the lyrics, man.

  • @rush2252 ok so where does the shoe full of rice come into the equation?

  • @rush2252 it wasn't his friend's girlfriend, it was his own

  • we were merely juniors....

  • i really like this video, ever since i was a freshman in college... lyrics for superhuman by r. kelly pls. good day

  • well I say abortion is sad, killing a baby whom has not developed

  • Listen to Brick by Ben Folds Five and don't pass judgement on other people for their life decisions

  • The second verse is about a breakup and suicide.

  • stop a babys breath-aborting it

shoe full of rice-no wedding because the abortion

best firend part- intentional confusing bullshit filler

  • Not 100% about abortions...It is more about teen pregnancy in general

  • good job jake

  • I think he means that he got his best-friends girlfriend pregnant " baby's breath" and his bf broke up with her, so she committed suicide by taking meds. And she was in love with him but was suppose to wed his bf. I think. This song is really confusing.

  • and he says : " we never talked of our lack of relationship " because they couldn't date since she's with his friend.

  • And again no...Lack of relationships mean they were never with anyone else.

As far as the friend goes his girlfriend popped a bunch of pills to have a miscarriage.

  • To put it simply his friends girl killed herself.

  • Valium, to be specific. It's a sedative.

  • Comment removed

  • read my comments it will explain everything

  • I don't understand the best friend part. Did she sleep with his best friend too? or did his gf do the same thing? WTF!?

  • what a tremendously great song, especially for those of us who look back on past relationships in pain

  • Stomping baby's breath, ,the flowers at a wedding.

  • "Stop a baby's breath, and a shoe full of rice, no" - First of all, forget the NO. Stop a baby's breath is just that. Abort the baby. A shoe full of rice is a result of a wedding. So - stop a baby's breath AND then you stop a wedding. She's pregnant, get her to abort, and then there's no wedding

  • Ahhh.. now i get it..

  • Stomping baby's breath, as in the flowers in a bouquet!

  • Okay but why? lol what is that suppose 2 mean?

  • any idea what a shoe full of rice means?

  • it means a shoe full of rice duh

  • shoe full of rice refers to the wedding that they never had

  • thier's tear's in my eye's when

i listen to this music! i rember my Luv .........oh Darla i miss u

  • wow...jus wow.
