This doesn't make me want to squat, but I think it gives the average person in the US (a person with regular internet access) a good idea of what it can mean to really live.. Most people would freak out without their electricity even
Yeah, totally. Thumbs up. A very well done squat documentary. I live in Philly myself, I never really came to encounter with squatters, but plenty of gutter punks. It's a shame that only so many people will get to see the different sides of Philly. Also, you did a great job in not exploiting them but bringing the viewer into their world.
I have to give kudos on having interviewed intelligent people with thought out ideas and views on their time squatting, instead of what i see in so many american docs on the subject, which is usually dumbs kids high on drugs blaming parents and society on why they live in complete filth. These guys were intelligent, philosophical, and not at all about towing the line. They actually criticized what deserved to be criticized instead of glancing over it. Great job!
Now that Ive become accustomed to having a normal house I dont think I could really do without my electricity-My guitar and Bass amps, even my fuckin computer seems a necessity
this is great a video for a man in my shoes. i've hitched around a bit, but noting compared to what is documented in this video. a lot of my friend ride frait and cruz the states as a life style. i just have not brought myself to that state. thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I have an art website which also hosts some mp3's of some of my bands and music projects. Youtube won't allow website addresses in comments, so I'll type out the web address with "dot" etc. --
triple double-u "Dot" justinduerr "dot" com
Click the link "audio files" - the band is Eulogy, there are two or three songs from the oil refinery album on there. I ought to post the whole album on there sometime!
Sucks. Sorry to hear that. Glad I never got drawn into that.... also had some friends who did, same outcome though I had a FEW friends who beat it and are still around.
Ha ha, OK! No, it just sounded like that to me! When I was a squatter I got most of my food from the trash - lots of uneaten food thrown away. I also would beg for change, though I hated doing that - it's a pain, as people can be such assholes. For water... I remember going to public places like train stations and filling up empty water jugs. Local convenience stores also used to give away 'complimentary' water, but stopped to crack down on the homeless.
@Traductus5972 Weird, since the rat would have been eating stuff that's way more disgusting (probably) than anything you'd pick out of the trash. My weirdest experience with this was on the local university campus, some frat kids had a pig roast in their front yard, and only ate a few bits..... so me and some friends ended up eating a bit portion of that pig, still on the spit. I felt disgusting after that.
@Traductus5972 you just have to know when different businesses throw out their daily product and some will just give it to you before it even goes in the trash
@Traductus5972 Dumbster diving is not that bad for you a lot of the time. Corperations will often throw out food that is still good to eat just because it hasn't been sold and they want to put fresher food on their shelves. I've never gotten sick from dumbstering;
@Traductus5972 are you kidding me? you'd sooner eat a shit-munching sewer rat than a clean, wrapped steak pulled from a grocery store dumpster? The food they chuck is still good for a few days, they plan the expiration dates that way so they never accidentally sell a spoiled product. I've been eating dumpster food since 1997 and never ever got sick as long as it was wrapped. i have found cases of eggs thrown out because a few got cracked, piles of steaks, chicken, fruit, etc.
grow it, kill it, dumpsterdive it, steal it, beg for it, stand in line at the soup kitchen for it...There's more than enough food and space in the universe 2 go around. The government wants 2 tell u the have nots can't have anything because there's not enough 2 go around but it's bullsh-t. They will use oxymorons like 'cost of living' when in reality life is free. Living existed before money. Capitalism is corrupt. Then they charge us with 'quality of life crimes'
@TheStreeetz Well, anyone thats ever worked in food service knows theres an absurd amount of food thrown away nightly.Seems like the nicer/more expensive the restaurant the more waste.
I cant wait to finish high school and squat around for a few years man. C squats where its at. But even if I cant get there I wouldnt mind squatting in New Orleans or Baton Rouge. Cool documentary. Real eye-opening.
C squat probably sucks, if it still exists. I don't know. From my experience the NYC squat scene seemed elitist and stupid, but that was also over 10 years ago now. Who knows. The idea of 'snobby' squatters always kind of blew my mind though. "Leftover Crack" etc., blagh.
It does suck. I was there. Once I was there and some guy bumped into me . I said sorry cause you know, I try to keep a positive attitude and he straight lobbed me right in the face the back of my head hit the wall. C Squat. Elitist and dickfaced indeed.
Yes all of those people in C are a bit elitist but you must understand that the police will infiltrate them by sending undercovers in and the cops brutality in NYC way worst then most city's, they even built a police station right across the street from C squat. but now C is a CO-OP.
C hasn't been a squat in almost 10 years. but the idea of squatting is to leave what they taught you behind. Listen kid if you think your gonna just get out of school and become some squatter then you have an eye opener coming for you.
Thanks! That's my old band Eulogy playing inside the tanks of an abandoned oil refinery. Send me a mailing address & I'll mail you a copy of the recording.
I love documentaries that take you into places most will never go. It is true what we need is so little in current system. I met a chayote on the border in Calexico he was at a baseball park cooking eggs and torso asked me if I would like some I a different type of transient a truck driver was interested in his stories. This man got by with a light bag on his back and change in his pocket and a joint with his breakfast. Alcohol stive can fit in your pocket some water you can travel very light.
Hmmm... it's been a while since I actually watched this, can't remember what part you're referring to. Who cares what style of hair people have? Not me, for starters.
