I actually won an iPad 2 on this yesterday.. the manager said they needed to recalibrate it since 5 people won this week.. and then I watched him turn it off.. (this was at Gameworks in Ybor City - Tampa, FL)
There is a way to beat the system, but they do patch these machines to stop actual skill-winning. These machines are all anti-skill machines. They only LET you win by skill, if they have reached a pay-out level. But you can win before that time. (But they don't tell the owners that. lol.)
How does it work? If you are in a CUT-ZONE, it forces a long-drift past the "ideal cut zone". If you are just before the CUT-ZONE, it stops short. They are NOT skill machines. They are pre-set CHANCE.
@JDMortal If you won a $300 prize it was because $600 was made from the people before you, who lost. Unlike a slot-machine... Your chances actually do improve, the more people loose. The machine won't DRIFT, and will CUT with FULL FORCE, when a payout is due. It needs to, in order to produce winners. Losers rarely ever brag about loosing, while winners rant for months, creating more losers for the game along the way.

You can find a link to the Namco Manual if you look. Basically its set to over or under shoot the string.
Heres a little excerpt: "For a 12.5% payout with $100 mix and $1 game fee (default), a prize should be dispensed after 800 plays. For this setting, adjust all three rotary switches to “E,” then press the reset button. This is done with the power ON. Refer to page 9 of the manual for more payout options"
@HaloHamstur It was a poorly calibrated machine, there are 3 zones on it and it programmed to miss x amount of times by a default of 12mm, I was just lucky a newbe had the machine
They have this in the disneyland arcade and usually you see a bunch of tourists with money playing this game trying to win. Sometimes i see winners but sometimes i see people crying lol The good thing is that they restock that machine day by day if anybody won anything.
When the machine is not ready to payoff and you get off the forward movement button as the rope enters between the scissors, the unit continues moving forward ever so slightly and stops with the rope just behind the scissors. And if you get off the button before the rope enters between the sciessors, the unit stops immediately.
The movement to the right is not difficult to get down. I got the rope where it could pass between the scissors 9 out of 10 times, having missed on the first try. Just line up the black rubber belt over the round nut that's above the rope. The forward movement is the difficult part and I believe rigged.
