I love how his solo totally transcends all the theoretical bull shit they teach you in school. His first lick is a Db minor pentatonic blues lick and it's over a Dmaj 7. In school they would tell you thats wrong, but it sounds great to me. This is a guy who really hears and feels what he plays. I wish there were more guys like this playing around.
love this guys playing. and i think its super cool that he looks like he could be teaching your high school english class but happens to also be one of the greatest jazz guitarists!
thanks MOGLIDER for posting this. I have had the honour of playing with Louis a couple of times when he guested with our Sunday band. Singularly the greatest musician I could ever wish to play with :)
Do you mean the Sunday band at the Globe? That's where I started out finding the bands I wanted to book at Mezzanine--is this that Tom? This is Jamie by the way, worked as a manager at Mezz for about a year, five or six years ago..
hi would anyone hav footage of john murray,he was a drummer in dublin, ownedd the dublin drum centre,i am his son and would love to find footage of him cheers all
I think every aspiring guitarist should listen to you at least once a day to learn how to swing. Man you know how! I have been playing for 30 years and know how to swing but, when I really want to swing I listen to you first!!! Thanks.
Louie is one of the truly great musicians of our time, the guy can play his ass off! I`ve been watching Louie for 30 years now and played with him several times, there is No great guitar player.
This is crazy to watch, I just watched Louis getting schooled on how to vamp the ending of this tune with Benny Goodman, now here he is schooling Steve at the end! The student had become the master! Once again...jazz school is not like this anymore!
It's difficult to pick and choose, but this is certainly among the very best videos of Louis that I've yet seen... just magnificent stuff. Thanks as always, MOGLIDER.
Derry, Northern Ireland, I believe. October 1982, in the aftermath of Steve's visit (also the great drummer Bobby Rosengarden) to the Cork Festival playing Louis' suite "JoyceNotes". This is a BBC TV b'cast.
My apologies for the double comment. I was having problems with my broadband connection and the first comment did not seem to register, although my sentiments were all true. Happy Christmas viewing to all.
Wow, Thank you for this great clip from Louis. What a truly great Player he is. Wonderful to see the quite awesome Steve Laspina too, it is an extra treat to see the late Pete Ainscough in better health, R.I.P
Thank you for this clip. Steve originally came for the Cork Jazz Festival as part of the Band For Louis's Joycenotes Suite, and stayed around for this gig. Lovely to see the late Pete Ainscough also,RIP
Here is Downbeat Magazine writing of Louis Stewart:"Extraordinary high levels of focused creative playing..,he must be considered one of the instrument's world class players"
Steve LaSpina has played festivals with Benny Carter; Stan Getz; PhilWoods;Clark Terry;Chet Baker; Randy Brecker; Pat Martino;Joe Williams; Mark Murphy & Recorded with Jim McNeely& Fred Hirsch.
