  • I love their outfits :)

  • I love that they're all hippies. it makes me wish I could do the same thing with my friends :)

  • love this movie!!! loved it when i was only 2!!

  • Is that Googi from the black cauldron

  • I love this movie, I love that this movie does speak to us about His Word in a simple, fun way! Who cares what folks are wearing! HE wouldn't !

  • i absolutely love the music in this music! The costumes were just created to fit the period it was produced (the 70's) As for the comedy, it can be a bit annoying, but they are trying to draw in an audience farther than the christian public. And that it did when it came to broadway

  • And why did John the Baptist become judas? Was it because John was a prophet and the Jews (writers of this movie)thought all prophets were crazy, so they casted him as Jesus betrayer

  • 1:50 Zippedy doo! LOL!

  • The youth group at my home church in San Angelo, Texas has performed this around the country every summer for 15 years (i was in it for 3). You can hardly believe the impact it has on these kids as well as the churches we visit and perform for. It really gives them a sense of God and a deeper faith whether they are a performer or someone in the crowd.

  • Best moment 7:05 through 7:23

  • I love this musical! It shows the gospel so bluntly that its impossible not to understand, and its just about a group of friends having fun and talking about god!

  • am i the only one who wonders why they are the only people in the city ?

  • @SNB222 they make their own community. to them, the only thing exists, is Jesus and his teachings.

  • @SNB222 Good point. I guess they didn't feel like trying to get the extras.

  • 589 COMON!

  • Godspell and JC Superstar as one show = disjointed epicness.

  • While not my favorite song from the movie, I still probably remember this one the best to this 'day.'

Lead singer - Robin I believe - has a great voice that was made for this song. It's not over-powering but is solid, and conveys the message of the song beautifully.

....On 'Godspell' in general - this was the 'Jesus' I was raised on in the 70's and 80's - an all encompassing one who would really, truly be one of us - clown feet and all! :-)

  • Who cares if they are hippies what's so wrong with loving nature, not starting wars and loving peace? Hippies get a bad rap, for what? The previously mentioned traits are how Jesus would want us to be.

  • @ImTheFaceTutorials Gotta agree there, in retrospect they did have some good ideas on how to live, in other regards though, not so much in my opinion.

  • I feel like this would make a whole lot more sense on stage...but on film it just seems...so bizzare.

  • DAY BY DAY 5:30

  • I love the plant scene

  • 4:17 - 4:20 SO funny.

  • 2:37 - 3:30 I LOVE this, it's one of my favorite parts from the movie, I can recite this whole scene in a moment's notice.

  • LOL in church today we were discussing the man at the tax collector's booth in Matthew and I immediately thought about this part with the Pharisee and the tax gatherer.

  • This movie makes me want to invent a time machine, travel back in time to the early 1970's and visit NYC.

  • @Colddeed Indeeeed.

  • @Colddeed I think NYC is an amazing city, but NYC of the 70's was . . . um . . . filthy and run down (think Cleopatra with super-acne . . . and warts). It took me several days to look past all the trash, porn, and drugs and see what was there . Giuliani cleaned up the city. I wanted to go to NYC 'cuz that's where Spider-Man was (I understand, Spidey's fictional, but the setting was real). I was crushed by the reality, but I got over it . . . eventually & I ♥ NYC.

  • i like this movie but even from the beginning, i didn't get what was going on. like why did they randomly feel like jumping ina fountain with a stranger, and why did they go there and they were so happy about it? can someone please explain what this movies really about and whats happening? i'm confused

  • @yankeegirls29 This movie portrays the Gospel According to Matthew in a "modern" (for the time it was written) sense. The man gathering the Apostles represents John the Baptist in the first part of the movie and Judas Iscariot in the later part. When they follow him into the fountain it represents Baptism. It's all very symbolic. To truly understand what is happening I suggest you read Matthew in the Bible =D

  • @yankeegirls29 It is a depiction of the Gospel of Matthew, focussing on true core of Jesus' teaching: the Sermon on the Mount & Beatitudes. Stylistic considerations aside, the child-like manner of the 'apostles' here can be understood in what Christ taught:

To be of the Kingdom of Heaven we must become as little children. Eager to love with complete sinceritty, putting aside all pretense. The 'apostles' here learn the lesson of the Gospel in guileless joy.

  • See I think the difference is that if this when down in the 1970s people would just excuse it as really good acid.

  • @ 7:54 that has got to be the most cutest smile ever

  • When I was a kid, I used to call the guy with the mustache Mario XD. This movie is fantastic.

  • @enemyofbohemia *mustache and pink overalls.

  • This movie portrays the parables in a fun way - that is, an easy way to understand - MHO

  • about a min into the video i get no sound

  • Comment removed

  • @Pengykinns he's the guy with the Afro and the superman t-shirt... ye I was confused at the start too... good play though

  • Okay, wait. Which one is Jesus? The afro man or the one that looks like Jesus? O_o

  • What I love about the scene when they sing Day by Day, is the way they play like innocnt children. "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." Mark 10: 14,15

  • omg a black man clapping on 1 & 3. forgive them, they know not what they do!

  • 7:04 - 7:31 is the best part in the movie!!!!

  • 7:04 - 7:31 is the best part in the movie!!

  • 2:56-5:35 was saying in Matthew 18:21-35

  • Day By Day is my favorite song in this whole movie!

  • @NumOneJoeJonasLuver mine too.

  • Merrell is great "rapping". This is a really early example of rap--in 1972. Merrell has a great rapping voice!

  • LOL at 4:18

  • How could I have forgotten about that car?

  • I have a bad feeling this isn't gona be a happy ending lol.

  • can you imaging this as a video game? :)

    or maybe a singing game....

  • I've never thought He , our Lord, was portrayed as a "clown" in this movie. Superman came to my mind when I 1st saw it, and that was when it 1st came out in the 70's :)

  • I love the message of the Gospel presented so clearly and simply.

And Jesus as a clown at first offended me until I realized that the Apostle Paul says the Gospel is foolish to those who do not believe. SUCH A GREAT MUSICAL! (the crucifixion scene makes me cry every time)

  • @lawchic10 Huh. I thought it was just for fun. I don't necessarily believe, but this movie is far from foolish to me. It's one of the most enjoyable and fun movies I've seen. And yes, the crucifixion is rather touching. I love the harmony that do following that scene.

  • @lawchic10 Oddly enough I never saw it as them, even Jesus, looking like clowns. I saw it more as a this is the 70s and this is an experimental theatrical thing, I liked it. And I also took it to serve a point that you don't have to look so serious and somber to be able to preach the word of God, that you can believe in God and be light hearted and colorful in life as well.

  • @lawchic10 I did too at first - I saw this when it first came out - but since then I've learned what a great Gospel too this is - love it!!!

  • I meant tool :)

  • Robin is absolutely awesome.

    WHAT??

    WHOAAAAA!!!

  • ohh...that one guy with the pan on his head (forgive me if I can't point out his name...never seen this movie before...just kinda got curious and checked it out) sounds just like Gerdy (or was it Gurdy...) from the black cauldron (Disney) when he's begging. He did happen to actually do Ge/urdy's voice, did he? (Anyone know?)

  • I love how this is all impromptu and yet they're all in synch with each other.

  • It's called a musical oh smart one

  • It's called a joke, oh sarcastic one

  • lol I love how you're watching Gospell and your name is Antichrist616

  • Actually it's one of my favorites. The username comes from an old school nickname.

  • if you're not willing to suspend logic and disbelief for at least an hour and a half then you probably don't have much business attempting to enjoy a theatrical production. Go read a science book.

  • For calderwis: What you should care about is the message given. It is the message of hope for all who believe. These represent those who dropped everything to follow Yeshua, the Son of God. By following Yeshua, they secured their eternity, rather than just worrying about this world.

  • I think it's lovely...glad to see the Twin Towers intact and whole

  • Well, booboo, it should be - this was done in the 70's! SO SAD they aren't HERE anymore :-(

  • The movie is a bit too silly for my taste at times, lol. But the songs are great and Victor Garber was incredible! :)

  • i love day by day...so pretty

  • Looks like they're going to break out into a few verses of "Grease Lightning" at 1:09

  • The song they're actually humming to is "Learn Your Lessons Well."

  • Like many of you I truly loved this movie and stage show starting as a child. Victor Garber is an amazing actor and vocalist and has gotten even better with age.

  • omg i watched this in my religion class in fifth grade!

  • WTF is going on? I realize they're portraying biblical figures recounting parables, but why? Why should I care about any of them?

Oh well, time to google Godspell...

  • It was an experiment to see what would happen if the SOHO district of NYC met the Gospel of St. Matthew and Luke. It was ironic in the post-Woodstock days that a group of "hippies" could interpret Bible parables in a day when "establishment" churches shunned the youth of the day who acted and dressed like the characters in this movie. On one hand you can just say its another adapted stage/screen play from a work of literature. On the other they say Jesus would have shunned today's churches.

  • Thanks for your reply! It's definitely not my favorite musical, but now at least I get it.

  • @KE5RHD AMEN!

  • I think David who plays John should have been Jesus...he looks a bit like him..

  • but really, what does Jesus look like? Or are you just going by the general image of him?

  • haha I'm going by general images such as the beard and long hair.

  • Hey wasn't that Greg Focker's prayer? 5:42

  • Fred Sanford is gonna get awfully pissed off when he finds these kids messing around his junk yard...

  • "Ya big bunch of dummies!"

  • I worked on the film the film version of Godspell ... you had to be there to appreciate everything that was happening. It was, at the very least ... magical!

  • @phoxphyer13 Thank you for your work, as you can see it will have a lasting affect on many.. tell us.. did they get how special this all would be at the time?

  • @rob5361 We had no idea when the movie first began filming .... as filming progressed, it was obvious that we were working on something different ... special. Like I said, you had to be there to experience it first hand .... I think the music is what actually started the "movement" in the film .... we worked on it first, then staging on location. Putting both together was unbelievable .... would like to get everyone back together but some have past away and some folks are not available ...

  • I sang the song (Day by Day) Iin the play of Godspell

  • I love the overall message- Jesus is basically a clown.

  • uh

4:56 what does Robin say? "will you not bout show your fellow servant the same pity i showed to you?" i dont understand

  • I think it's "Were you not bound to show your fellow servant . . ."

  • Day by Day is such a beautiful song. That woman, Robin Lamont I think is her name, such a pretty voice.

  • The play was better.

  • joanne ad merrel have a thing nthis movie, right?

  • What a wonderful uplifting movie :)

  • her voice bugs me

  • i actually liked my schools production of this better :P not that this isnt done well XD

    YA DenisMorris!!

  • Which on of you is this! :D

    this is emily williamss ;)

  • hey emily this is Vanessa, Anna's friend.

i see you in the caf almost every day :P

  • oh right, you mentioned seeing me here :)

  • Jesus christ super star is better then this more passion

  • JC Superstar is much different from this. Andrew Lloyd Weber is a showman (showoff lol) who likes to got for the superlative. But he never got the point of the Gospel story.

Godspell communicates the key points of Jesus' teachings in a way that anyone of any age or religion (or no religion) can understand, without being 'preachy'.

In all seriousness it preaches the Gospel in the way it should be taught; not ramming it down your throat.....

...but gently - so even a child can understand.

  • @19lfm12 Superstar is the passion. It deals with that part of the gospel only, Godspell includes the passion, but has much more of the gospel.

  • @depsiua Godspell shows the teaching of the true core of the Gospel of Christ: the Sermon on the Mount & Beatitudes. The summation of ALL He taught. Learn & live this & you have found the Kingdom of God & are of it. It is that simple.

Thus the simplicity of the 'apostles' here: become as little children, learning of God with joy, & no pretense.

JC Superstar for all its bravado taught nothing of the Gospel.....

  • @19lfm12 Actually, Webber wasn't trying to teach "the point of the Gospel story". He was trying to portray Jesus as a man, not God. That's why Judas was the protagonist of the story, instead of Jesus.

  • @blithium JS Superstar showed the non-comprehension of Judas, Mary Magdalene & the Apostles. For all the time spent with Jesus, they often 'did not get it'. Did not comprehend that he was God; nor much of what He was teaching. This is true of most ppl - especially 'pious pew sitters'. Yes it showed much of the story from Judas' perspective...which was interesting.

But the point remains: Godspell actually teaches the Gospel in a simple manner that all can understand.

  • @19lfm12 That's the way I see it with this movie, my mother didn't like it though because she is heavily opposed to hippies (she's from that era) and thinks they're twisting the Gospel to fit their own agenda in this movie. Summaries describe the characters as hippies but I don't see how that's possible, they aren't hippies they were students, waitresses, cab drivers, etc., they just happen to be wearing funny colorful clothes.

  • @19lfm12 I have two responses to your comment. First, I think you're correct. Superstar is very showy and Andrew Lloyd Weber's style is VERY operatic and can be kinda inaccessible. Second, when you watch Superstar, you have to keep in mind that it was written from Judas' point of view. That really changes the viewing experience when you keep that in mind.

  • @KrysandJulianne Agreed. As a work of theater/art, Superstar is wonderful...but 'inaccessible'. Even to myself who knows quite a bit about thester, opera, etc. But that is Weber.... Indeed, it is fromJudas' perspective or non/dis-belief. He does not comprehend Jesus' teaching.

Godpell teaches the Gospel without 'preaching'; as it should be. By acting out the lessons in utter simplicity. As communication is reaching a common understanding, Godspell achieves this goal. It reaches ppl.

  • @19lfm12 Superstar is for fags.

  • @19lfm12 I really like JCS, so going from it to this is a mood wiplash to say the least. It honestly just seems kinda silly...

  • @19lfm12 Well, that is because Jesus Christ Superstar is...kinda blasphemous and meant to make a mockery of the bible.

Godspell is like what you said meant to portray Jesus' teachings

  • @staticfan1 I don't think that Superstar was written with the intent of being blasphemous. It & Godspell are completely different, both from theatrical AND theological standpoints:

Superstar shows what many if not most men REALLY think of Christ, as most truly do NOT believe in Him - pew sitters included!

Godspell is faithful in spirit to what Jesus REALLY taught.....which had nothing to do with establishing a global theocratic hegemony venerating Mammon. THAT is why many find it 'silly'.

  • I've found that the main reason I love this show is that it seems that the actor's truly seemed to have fun with this. They put their heart and souls into this. They all let it out, with all their energy and their abundant of talents. It's a shame not many of them went on after this accepts a few of them. They were ALL extremely talented actors that they should have had a chance to go farther.. RIP, Lynn, Jeffery, David & Merrill.

  • Godspell director David Greene and Godspell writor John-Michael Tebelak are dead as well.

  • Day by Day...what a beautiful song.

  • it's so nice to see Mr. Garber here... to think that his image these days is the father in ALIAS!

  • I said two!!

  • I like that Jesus is sitting in the cart, at the end of Day By Day. For some reason it makes me giggle.

  • Hee, Afros must be a pretty holy haircut; there are three main characters with them. xD I think I'll grow an afro.

  • 4:13 to 4:16 sounds like Butters from South Park when he was acting like smeagal.

  • time nazi here you mean that smeagal sounds like him considering this was made way way way before LOTR.

  • I know, I only noticed the comparison.

  • lol peace mobile.

  • "I said the good lord in heaven, child"

  • amen!

  • AMEN SISTA!

  • i love part 3 it's one of my favorite parts.

  • Thanks for posting this! I'm recognizing some of these young faces, slightly older :) in some recent shows and movies. It's fun to see how they looked when they were young!

  • is that afro real? or a wig?

  • It was probably real. You have to remember that this was 1973 and that was the style.

  • Which actress is the one who has the single skate, and uses her quick charm to get the matching skate from the guy?

That's such an adorable scene! (during the Day by Day song)

  • The actress was Katie Hanley.

  • My friend Ellie sang this song in our production of Godspell. She was great. Not quite as good as this though.

  • Jeffrey Mylett is my favorite actor in this movie. I absolutley love him! When i first saw this movie i was so happy! But then I think I cried when i found out her had died. I had this whole colage of the few picture i could find and everything..so sad. Victor Garber is also a brillant actor! love this movie! thanks for posting! :)

  • This is a cool play Im doin this at OCSA.

  • about halfway through the video, it freezes and say's youtubes "We're sorry, this video is no longer avaliable" I don't know if its only doing this for me or if a reposting is in order.

  • luv this song..i'm doin the play in church..opening nite is in 3 days

  • lol love this

  • oops I meant Robin

  • doesn't Gilmer look like Melissa Joan Hart?

  • Day by Day is one of my fave songs in the movie.

  • i said the good lord in heaven chlid! amen.

    so funny!

  • I love this song. Those three points help me each day.

  • I love this song. It has so much passion.

  • The interaction between Robin and Jesus during the song is very touching, especially 6:25-43. Sadly, he is normally portrayed as being "all business" and not particularly affectionate. But how can there be a message of love, kindness, and forgiveness without frequent doses of affection to make it real?

  • i couldn't agree more!

  • 5:16 looks like something from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

  • Yeah, except Jeffrey is actually kinda laughing towards the end of that sequence. (5:25)

  • This percussive stuff starting at around .20 reminds me of the percusson group Stomp. Gotta love this!!

  • 2:51

    LOOOVE

    "Get me outa here"

  • yea I do like day by day pretty awsome

  • Day by Day surely is one of the best songs in this movie! Yep :)

  • Day by Day is possibly the best song in the film.

  • Hehe. Stage show is always better but hey, still great. I love this show! Who'd have thought you'd get the captain from Titanic (Victor Garber)and the Chief from Where is Carmen San Diego in the same movie?

  • Not to mention Alias' Jack Bristow back in his afro-wearin' days!!!

  • hahaha Victor Garber in suspenders

  • i am 45 and this is bringing back my childhood .the lord is the man .god bles us all

  • Now honestly...how can anyone not just LOVE this! It makes me feel so happy!

  • are you sure he wasnt quoting the bible?

    lol

  • Day by day is such a beautiful song. Ben Stiller quoted it in Meet the Parents.

  • john 316

  • why does everyone like that one?

  • I seriously cannot believe that's the prim old guy from "titanic", Mr. Andrews

  • He has done quite a lot of things since this movie. He did take some years off after his Broadway days. Then he got back into acting.

  • thank you so much for uploading this. I'm King Narrator 1 [The rapper] in my church's production of Godspell! XD

  • I love Robin! She's so comical!

  • this version almost made me cry, she does it with such emotion !! absolutely amazing

  • Unfortunatly I can only find copies of region 1 dvd. If anyone knows where I can get a region 2 copy from, please let me know!!!

  • Fantastic............wish I could get hold of the dvd. Brings back memories. Thanks for taking the trouble to put it on YouTube!

  • Try looking at Borders Bookstore or Virgin megastore for the DVD. It does exist.

  • Thanks alot...will do!!!!
