seeing that music is a universal means of communication it should be saying something relative to the times that inspires and causes people to think and rethink; Curtis was one of the poets who accomplished that in his music. Somebody's sold out!
The greatest artist musician and everything else ever i mean ever this is my favorite of all time. this is what all black men should strive to be like one
Curtis was so influential... you know you did something right when Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix are among the musicians that borrowed your music & spirit.
without Curtis...Soul, (or Reggae), wouldn't be the music it is today. LEGEND and GENIUS. Rest In Peace in the knowledge that your songs will always be an inspiration.
Seriously, no one brought it like Curtis Mayfield. He was maybe the most important musician in the 1971-73 era. Unbelievable personal strength in a man that spoke only about people empowering themselves. Sure, he spoke to the black audience but his message was colorblind. And his band was serious, fierce and funky. Surreal combination. This man WAS Bob Dylan for about 18 months in the early Seventies. RIP.
@jackrabitcafe Curtis Live! at the bitter end is the best cd I have, along perhaps with Viola Wills' "Soft Centers" (now that's seriously under-rated!)...I love every track on the Bitter End album. Found a review on Rolling Stone magazine that slated it for dabbling in politics etc fucking moron music journos never changes! What a band, great feeling great mix of old and newer material....what I'd give to have been there!
@jackrabitcafe Bitter End Lp always rewarding, love it. Every track, great feeling, superb band, nice mix of older and newer material. Rolling Stone magazine slated it for dabbling in politics, just shows their agenda and ignorance for what it is. Another seriously under-rated album from that era is Viola Wills' "Soft Centers" check it if you get the chance.
curtis was blessed indeed with great insight and musicianship. he really wanted a world that was peaceful, like we all should. may THE LORD AHAYAH REST HIS BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!!!!
"high yellow girl, can't you tell, your'e just the surface of our dark deep well, if your mind could really see, you know your color the same as me."-written by a true poet and a LEGEND. Rest easy Curtis, God bless u brotha.
No one could paint the picture of ghetto life quite like Curtis Mayfield. A poet, a minstrel, a man whose music appealed to the conscience of the human race. Thanks for keeping it real brother Mayfield.
@fretdoctor7 I so agree Doc...there hasn't been any emotion or situation in the ghetto, in life in general that he couldn't put there to touch all. Make you go hmmmmmmm....what a clear picture.
@fretdoctor7@fretdoctor7 I so agree Doc...there hasn't been any emotion or situation in the ghetto, in life in general that he couldn't put out there to touch all. Make you go hmmmmmmm....what a clear picture.
Incomparable, he was the man, the soul brother. Look on this and learn children for there are few among us today as gifted or as beautiful as Curtis, Hear him and take heart.
Yep! I have that whole performance. I believe it was for Push/Excel concert here in Chicago back in '71. A whole lotta good artists was on that bill. The Jackson 5, Bill Withers, The Chi Lites, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, oh man too many to list.
We are looking at the late legendary&soulful Curtis Mayfield. And looking at this video and reminissing about the 70's, and holding back tears if your 30 something or older. What in the HELL could justin timberlake possibly have to do with this?!
Its not fair to compare justin with curtis. he not even in the same stratosphere with curtis. let the kid blossom, do a few movie scores, then you can even BEGIN TO THINK ABOUT COMPARING THE TWO!
Comparing Curtis Mayfield with Justin Timberlake is like comparing a T-Bone steak to a shit sandwich...you just don't. The guy who posted that is obviously attempting a joke, or has a mental disability. Does "Lake" even play an instrument?
amazing video. this is what youtube is about, posting videos which capture a moment, inspire etc.. curtis was such an incredible artist, doubt we'll see anything like him again
From 1971. A concert here in Chicago gave by Push/Excel I believe back in the day. I have a bootleg of it. Too many good artist on that bill to list. It must've been more than one day.
You talkin' about Justin Timber-FLAKE right? He ain't nothin' without TIMBALAND,thanks to him he crossed over from Suburban to urban. And U said it, performer not ARTIST like Mayfield.
you just hatin, you know mayfield ain't fuckin with timberlake, with or without timberland. he's just that good. also, where are u in nyc, holla at a brother, mayeb we can listen to and compare both together. :)
Timberlake ain't bad, but Curtis/Live is possibly THE greatest live album of all time and as far as performing goes, JT hasn't come close to that. I hear he does put on a good show, but Curtis was LEGENDARY. The Bach of Soul music, if you will, and he showed it on stage. JT hasn't reached that kind of territory yet even if he is the "savior" of white R&B.
i totally agree with you,BUT its johnny publics ignorance thats pushing for the qualilty of good singers, thats why there arent any today.theres no curtis's,no sam cookes,no jackie wilsons,no bobby womacks, because johnny public wants everyone to sound like usher!
