A lovely artist, so passionate, heart on sleeve - I saw him once, in DC - maybe 1983 - a small club on Connecticut Avenue - his final song of the evening I didn't recognize but it was such a carefree happy little tune that half the audience spontaneously began to whistle along -
I only found John Martyn after a dear friend introduced me to his genius shortly after his passing what a absolute genius who has truly touched my heart and that of others RIP gone but never forgotten an underrated star.
Thanks to my brother Luca, later a musical Idol in Argentina, I was introduced to john martyn...
Simplicity at its best.
And Germans DO have Rockpalast to be proud of! SO much good music brought to audiences... I remember seein Wire on this programme... and XTC too, i believe...
First saw John Martyn on BBC4's Guitar Heroes on the BBC (something like that) earlier this year. He was playing Dealer & from hearing that song & his performance i knew i was listening to genius. Certain Suprise is only the 2nd song i've heard of his, so i've still yet to explore more of his music , bet i won't be dissapointed.
Oh, with one click I did something correct, I found the song I lost. I weep with JOY. This man has tounched my heart since a Dear Dear Soul shared this wonderful beings talent with me. I can never thank this Being enough. I share it with this precious soul now ; -) "This is a message to YOU from ABOVE." A whisper in my ear to send it to you. : -))message from that ONE that loves you from above, says to tell you "I Love you Son." Peace and Love to ALL That come to hear Dear John Martyn. :)
This is probably my favourite JM performance. He turns up drunk and proceeds to polish off another half dozen beers throughout the show while playing some of the best guitar ive ever seen. The clouds of ganja smoke in the crowd add to the atmosphere of a slightly bemused German audience all captivated by the great man. This is certainly one of those 'wish i was there' concerts and unfortunately I will never get to witness the big man live again - he will be sadly missed by all.
im 16 and ive being brought up on john martyn never saw him live and cant stop thinking about his death just so saddening that he wasnt more in the public eye id rather have john martyn than kylie fucking minogue debbie harry or any other famous artists that have being or are in the chart
I totally agree...I was brought up with his music and a lot of music of that era and I know what you mean....the ones whom deserve the recognition the most very seldom get it....
I´am very sorry about John Martyns death. I saw him on the shaggy stage in a club called Roschinsky near Hamburg, Germany. His music was so beautiful, I cried a lot in this concert. Listen to him...
Thanks John for your beautiful music...a true artist...gifted and a real entertainer...you'll have left a lot of hurt people behind you mate....but happy to have found you and your music...aye..may you rest in peace now...
yeah he had a bit of a mix of bristol and cockney accent, because of the amount of time he spent there. genius best acoustic guitarist ever in my opinion, so much amazing emotion, recommend buying this dvd.
Mr Martyn is always superb, and his ease of playing and singing is never better shown than in this song. Pity about that slightly 'mockey' accent in the intro: the man is from Glasgow!!
Martyn was born in New Malden, Surrey, England. Martyn's parents, a pair of opera singers, divorced when he was five and he spent his childhood alternating between England and Scotland. Much of this was spent in the care of his grandmother. His strongest ties are in Glasgow, and he attended Shawlands Academy there.
Meet him in the Back room bar(Ireland),had a beer and some herb.Amazing down to earth man.....Thanks for the music.......Miss you big time....

John Martyn was the best Musician of
our Generation!....I met him in Bristol &
told him of the Joy he had given us as students......A Tear came to his Eye!
He was quite simply a lovely Guy & I am
devastated we have lost him...........
There is noone who could ever replace him. He lived Life to the Max & this has
what finally caught up with Him...........
Couldn't Love You more John!!
