Turner Movie Classics just showed the film this morning, (May 14th 2011), it is a very softly beautiful film, somewhat quiet and distant, but very moving, very kind to its characters. There are no villians in this film, no violence, no real sex....just a study of people "trying" (a very important word in this film). It is sensitive and beautiful to watch, a great tour of So Cal circa 1969, and a great tour of the human heart. Wonderfully done, why are the Europeans so good at this?
I rented this from Netflix a few months back as I'm a Spirit fan and a former Angelian.
The cinematography is breathtaking, really. I was mesmerized the entire way through. I'd never seen such extensive footage of the city, particularly Venice, and the once conspicuous pump jacks that peppered the region. They are still hidden in and about LA - there's one of the property of the Beverly Center still, concealed behind high concrete walls and canvased chain-linked fencing.
