I actually like this version better than Pulp's. Shatner brings more anti-upper-class anger than you hear in the original. Ben and Joe supply the exclamation points.
There is little point in comparing an original creation to a copy. They are completely different things.
If this song means something to you - you have Jarvis to thank for that - and nobody else can ever change that fact If the song doesn't mean anything to you - then what's the point in getting upset about it ?
No Klingons on Jarvis - he's got a very sharp sense of humour .
Great song, great video! By the way, last week, William Shatner received an honorary degree from his alma mater, McGill University in Montreal, Canada! Congratulations, Shatner, and as Mr. Spock says on "Star Trek," "live long and prosper!"
The entire album is wonderful and, yes, ironic as hell. Long live The Shat!

@DonH9992 Exactly... he's got the sneering contempt for the fatuous pretenders down.

love pulp and i love shatners tongue in cheek versions of songs.

This version is better because Joe Jackson sings the heck out of the backing vocals, Shatner is great too, but without Jackson, it is just OK.

@cheaptrickcharlie Joe Jackson adds the "oomph" that complements Shatner's street voice (which is awesome!)!!!!

I love both this one an Pulp's original. This is a great album for Shatner, and Joe Jackson is awesome, as usual, in this version.

Oh dear God. Blasphemy against Pulp! This is the reason that the EU will nuke Canada!

This is absolutely shit compared to Pulp's brilliant original.

@Chlodder This won the Grammy. Two of them. Jarvis Cocker even performed it live with him.

@BlackKnightJedekai REALLY? Woah. I'm genuinely surprised.
