What's freaking your chidren is Daddy is not taking control. Show them you are the master, take the bird, break its neck and stick it in the pot. I think it is a crow looking at its beak, although blackbirds are similar and I know to be relatively unspooked by humans if nested in the vicinity. I still think it's a crow.
