There is incredible good from the Catholic Church - Hospitals, orphanages, the scientific method and other scientific discoveries, founding the college system, the largest charitable organization on the planet...

Also, most people won't come forward after they were abused, so the real number would be staggering. The church covered it up well though, moving the abusers around and obstructing investigations. Remember it is about power. Mahoney and these priests and other bishops agreed to serve the Church, but somewhere preferred power. Molesting a child and getting away with it is a proof of power. Even some church officials have noted the fact that the problem is so vast it could wipe out the catholic church, and every priest has looked the other way and refused to turn in the predators to protect the church.
