I have some question I have a 1977 f150 custom Cab with a 400. Recently lost compression in the driver rear cylinder. Milky oil. And such. I thot blow head gasket but when I removed the heads gasket was ok butpistons. It's black like burnt is that ok?? How hard is it to pull the rest of the way to replace seal between trany and motor? Burnt valvs cause los of compression and ratteln sound when driving and no power? Please everyday driver!

yes that is normal for the pistons to be black with lower gas if you had a engine requiring race fuel they wouldn't be black. Why are you wanting to replace the rear main seal? go to a machine shop and have you heads check there might be a possiblity that its cracked get it sonic tested

I'm not sure dixitraditions77, I would find out if the bumpers had the same dimentions and the frame spacing was the same. Or better yet, find a company that sells 'bullbars' and see if the item #'s are the same for those two years. i.e.- "large black bullbar- fits 70-79 F100-F150" verify it with another company's listings and Then you'll know.

Hey ethanjags92, That was on there when I got it years ago. I saw some that looked exactly like it on ford dealer brochures, so it may have been a dealer installed original. I haven't seen any others like it in person, and it has very old sun baked paint on it, no badging, and fully welded. Good luck.

I think it was a dealer installed item from when it was new. I saw a few factory manuals showing fords with them and I have not seen any aftermarket ones that match.

It is very hard to reverse the rusting process, that's why they call it "cancer". If it is possible, find a truck with little rust but needs mechanical work instead. Or get a good rust free carcus from out west. In the end, a truck with little or no rust is much cheaper than one you fix the rot on, but got for cheap.

lol that was pretty sick the 460 is a pretty nuttsy motor but it dosnt have much bottom end torqe like a 351 winsor 400 modified came stock with 300 horse and 400 lbs of torqe all i had to do to make my 95 f150 with the 400 winsor push 500 was swap the cam and exaust system and i was running 11s on the quarter in a 4x4 truck ive got a dodge with a 360 now that i plan on putting an electric supercharger onto to get it pushing 500
