NO sheep is ever harmed in felt making process. If the herders don't take out the sheep's wool once a year in the summer, the sheep would be pretty uncomfortable and actually might die from overheating. How would you feel wearing your winter coat (designed to keep warm in -30C) in +30C of Mongolian summers?
Other countries use heavu stuffs like stone, sand, wood, cement etc to biuld their home, but Mongolian nomads use their sheep wool to biuld their warm homes called a Ger, and it's very easy to carry around, just fold it and its warm ind the winter and cool in the summer, very healthy breathable organic material to cover their home. By the way Mongolian weather is very extreme, -40 in the winter, +40 in the summer
@default1337 From an older felt, I would imagine! The real question is- how in the world did they ever make the first one? Granted, that probably happened thousands of years ago, but still- intruiging!
Bloody hell that's ingenious, I would never have thought to made cloth that way. Despite all the Wests fancy technology and specialist brainiacs I think we have a lot to learn from these people
@VonKlitzing As ingenious as that is, and as much as I agree with most people on these videos that living "wild" has so much more to offer than a metropolitan, "easy" life... technology isn't all bad!
The problem at the moment is it all revolves around money, rather than everyone giving their 2 cents and living a richer, fulfilling life - with or without technology. Electricity has so many uses, as do synthetic fibers etc, we just -don't- respect our roots or the creatures we shared it with.
wow i wish i lived an area like that i mean living in the city is cool but so fucking gay if u ask me like they tear down farms so ppl could live theyre and do nothing but shop and work for wat so they get money which they use to pay for bills i mean if u lived on that amazing landscape u have peace and hapiness not struggling to pay bills and b jealous of rich ppl
Its so natural, we save the sheep as we took off their burden, and they will be able to provide us with the warmth we need and we are NOT killing them ! interesting. :)
Imagine, if we dun took their burden off, when they see a tiger or a lion, how would they able to react faster when they have heavy burden of wool on them!! Its natural. I love FELTS!! :PP
"Cannibalism"? Eating animal protein to survive is "bad"? CIinging on words and "morals" is fine when you're in a house, safe from the weather and with a market in range. Your point of view on what it takes to live is what will get you killed. Any source of food has to be considered, unless you're suicidal. You can't count on your precious "society" to shield you forever.
@RoyMach1ne I think they just need something to keep the new felt from sticking together. Perhaps they used something different the first time. A grass or reed mat, for example, might work all right to keep the new felt from sticking together but a mother felt would probably last a lot longer than a grass mat.
I'm vegetarian, I don't eat animals cause it sounds like cannibalism for me. But if I had to eat meat or kill other animal to survive, I would do it with no sense of guilt. I don't blame traditional peole for the way they live, if they eat animals or whatever, that's their way to survive, to live, to be happy, to have quality of life. Since I'm immersed in this society, I can live without meet and still eat good and delicious food, therefore I do it. But some people don't live here.
@fulanaarvore well you just threw up a coin, and there's two sides to one of them. Some people might take this for meaning that "these people" are underprivileged and that if there was a "mcdonalds" and "stop and shop" on every corner they could have the same choice you have of living without meat, and still eating good. So which are you trying to say, who would you be to push an entire way of life out of it's place of existence? our society has done it before, our religions have done it too.
@fulanaarvore Just wondering...How is it anywhere remotely near cannibalism? Cannibalism is where you eat a member of your own species...So unless you're eating some of the great apes, eating animals isn't cannibalism.
@NohbdyThere He said 'like cannibalism for me'. I can see his point.
Why is there a difference between eating meat of one species to eating that of another? For example, why do people find it so distasteful to think of eating dog, cat or human, rather than cow, sheep or pig?
People are animals too. Or, to put it another way, animals are people too.
@mtdnelson This is what makes us human, the ability to abstract moral judgments and value things in degrees. You obviously lack that grand human quality if , you cannot tell the difference! You should try becoming the ultimate recycler and just scavenge manure on the ground!:) Dining on prey is normal, Eating/ hunting our fellow predictors is barbaric,

@fulanaarvore I didn't see them Killing any animals in this video did you? They reused animal fur that the sheep would die from with the heat. The horses are pets as well as tools.
@fulanaarvore I have to agree, also my main issue with eating meat is the way people go about it in western society. It cannot even by compared to the way hunter gathers would of killed and eaten meat.
A vegan, vegatarian or meat diet is not the answer in our society, none are going to 'save' the planet or save our health in the long term. Going back to our origins and eating with the seasons will do. Humans, domesticated animals, wild animals, plants, trees everyone is suffer because lazy
@fulanaarvore I'm a cannibal. I don't eat animals 'cause there's always enough people and they're way easier to catch. Also, I have no sense of guilt.
@fulanaarvore and good on you i say! you are not pushing your options on other people and i thank you for that, i think there's nothing wrong with eating other animals as long as you respect the animal you kill by one killing it in the most pain free way possibly and two eating it all! if you do live in the city or town then please try eat different types of meat, maby one day buy a full chicken not just the breast and legs and then once you have Eaton as much as you can you turn it into stock.
@fulanaarvore Agriculture and cultivation is the beginning of the trap which is the modern world of "I need more". Hunter gatherers don't "work", they "live". Try surviving in a cold climate on soy.
@fulanaarvore It's my understanding that the Mongolian nomads raise five kinds of animals and live almost exclusively off the products of those animals, from the milk of oxen, horses and goats (fermented and made into yogurt among other things) to their meat. They also use the wool, hair, hides and bones. They have a taboo against piercing the earth, which means no cultivation. They are herders.
@fatibel42 I should say "traditionally." These days they obviously have some access to more modern materials - that glass bottle - but not exactly a corner store.

That is simply not true Wuesterntropt. I hate the animal cruelty (to horses) exposed in this video.
Also, just because things are done in the Western world, it does not mean that they "pollute" the environment. At least in the UK there are plenty of craft people who make their own felt, also some factories follow strict regulations so that they do not pollute the environment (especially small industries)
My dear wake up: get some education. Let me ask you how many pair of shoes do you own? How many are made from leather? You may say it is not leather, but made from plastic - even worse on environment. Where do you see here animal cruelty?

Kokonutbaby, Youre the epitome of the word, Loser. The video was on how to make felt; yet you managed to turn it into a condemnation of an entire peoples spirituality. Self-righteous individuals such as yourself really need to consider opening up their minds. However, Im sure youre not entirely to blame; your parents most likely played a major role in brainwashing you throughout your childhood.
geelaka, u dont know me or my parents, am not a loser, nor do I attack your parents..it was just a comment, no need to attack my parents..I was not brainwashed as a kid, that is ridiculous..unless I offended u personally it's not your business..this is the internet for God's sake, dont take things so personally! People joke around of make comments because they are allowed to. Sheesh!
Man, you seem to be handling alot of unnessasary critisism here from Jaruul...I get you and I think he is being a little harsh so don't worry. I understand what you mean. You are saying that its a lifestyle that has been around for thousands of years and in that respect it appears primative compared to the advancements of modern culture and technology. Jaruul is also right to say that the Mongolian lifestyle still exists, so he sees it as a very current lifestyle, therefore not primative.
@gpaluk, yeah i guess i hurt his feelings but i didnt mean to..and i did apologize but guess he's not that forgiving so not much i can do about it..he took it too personally..it was just some silly comment that i cant even remember what i said in the first place & was probably just joking but they removed it..& u are exactly right on how I meant it.
For one thing I am not a "mate" or a "Phillistine" or even a guy...dont know what I said in my comment 2 mos ago that put u guys on edge as seems someone removed it but obviously it was something about primitives and something against worshipping false "sky gods"..but if u guys would like to live that way, im sure they will let u join up, lol..beat your felt and enjoy!
Hey if they want all my dryer lint they can have it and will save them all that hard work, lol...sky gods?? man, i did not know there were still primitive cultures on this earth...wonder what they thought of him whipping out his cell phone or a tv camera? lol
Plus most people in our type of culture think and prey to 'God' so wheres the differents there eh? And i'm sure they know that phones and tv cameras are really but like most 'primitive cultures' they choose to live the live they have now. I mean, they live long, get everything they need to survive by themselfs etc and have better diets.
How can you say that my culture is a primitive? and yours? do you even have a culture? We, Mongolian Nomads, are the most eco-friendly people on earth. You must lied on your profile loving gardening and so on. We have contributed a lot to world and have great history, culture, art, beautiful land and kind people. for that I always love my people and my country
Sorry didnt mean to offend anyone..was just joking around..but the word primitive is not a bad word, it just means primitive compared to industrialization or modern ways of doing things..arts such as basket weaving, etc are considered primitive also..nothing meant against your people..Im sure they are lovely & kind..u have come a long way from the Genghis Khan days Im sure.
I am sure USA came long way from slavery or UK came long way from colonization. Many Americans I have met are educated & well rounded. It is sad that people like you make America look bad. Human civilization does not only base on industrialization or material wealth. People keep traditions for centuries.
Look Jaruul, u dont have to get personal, I did not direct anything at u..I have never owned a slave nor did my parents, I never colonized anyone's country..there are still primitive cultures, beating things w/sticks is as primitive as basket weaving..I saw people w/cell phones in egypt on camels does that mean they all are modernized? no..most are tho..if u all like doing things the hard way go ahead..but factories do make things easier..if u wanna crap outside instead of use a toilet fine!
if you call my culture primitive it is personal. who are you to judge what is primitive or not? there are things better to do traditional way then purchase cheep mass factory produced shit that pollutes environment. your mind is primitive.
kokonutbaby1, you never insulted anyone. I totally agree that this is primitive. There are too many ignorant Brits or Mongolians who do not understand the meaning of the word "primitive". For the stupid old Brit who tease the Americans making references that the whole of the US is a "fundamentalist Christian" country, you should know that this is not only untrue but your insults are getting old... IT is always the people who never travelled to the US who makes such ignorant remarks.
Jaruul , you do realise that the word primitive is not an insult, do you? All societies lived in a primitive way at one stage or another, but with all honesty this is primitive for nowadays standards. And there is nothing wrong with this. It is fine and makes the world more interesting to have places that are still the same as they were thousands of years ago. Imagine if we all live in towns with buildings, it would make things really boring...
ok again I apologize if I hurt anyone's feelings..it was only a joking comment from someone who had stayed up late & make comments like everybody else does..i guess pouring milk down a horse's behind in worship to a sky god (im sure the horse enjoyed) & beating out felt for hrs w/a stick is "modern" just like here in the states those that wont walk under a ladder, break mirrors, spill salt, for bad luck are "modern" too. I have no problem being identified as a fund. christian..we are forgiving.
you apologize yet you continue to deem. Please, do not bring religion into. I am sure poor turkey that was killed in mass produced factory, truly enjoy your thanksgiving dinner table.
My dear; you really need to get off your high horses & loose your white supremacy attitude. There are things are more complex then your little mind. Just because it works for you it should work everyone else? Do you know/understand the cultures of other? Thus there is no need to enforce your narrow minded views on others. Perhaps, I may not know meaning of "primitive" in English, after all it is my third language.
For your fact Mongolia has 97% literacy rate. Out of 3 million people - 2 million cell phone users. Ger is contracted without a single nail, yet it is practical, light, and durable in harsh Mongolian climate.
For all those Morally & Royally Offended People:

From the very ancient and sacred _grandmother_ felt, who's secret reliquary location is known only to tribal elders.

To suggest that believing in a Sky God is primitive is a bit arrogant kokonut...
What if there is and they turn out to be right? It would be more interesting than monotheism lol.

Hey if they want all my dryer lint they can have it and will save them all that hard work, lol...sky gods?? man, i did not know there were still primitive cultures on this earth...wonder what they thought of him whipping out his cell phone or a tv camera? lol
kokonutbaby1 2 years ago
you say primitive cultures but they live longer than us mate because they are fitter and have a better diet.
Daveywolfy 2 years ago 4

Sorry didnt mean to offend anyone..was just joking around..but the word primitive is not a bad word, it just means primitive compared to industrialization or modern ways of doing things..arts such as basket weaving, etc are considered primitive also..nothing meant against your people..Im sure they are lovely & kind..u have come a long way from the Genghis Khan days Im sure.
kokonutbaby1 2 years ago
I am sure USA came long way from slavery or UK came long way from colonization. Many Americans I have met are educated & well rounded. It is sad that people like you make America look bad. Human civilization does not only base on industrialization or material wealth. People keep traditions for centuries.
Jaruul 2 years ago
Look Jaruul, u dont have to get personal, I did not direct anything at u..I have never owned a slave nor did my parents, I never colonized anyone's country..there are still primitive cultures, beating things w/sticks is as primitive as basket weaving..I saw people w/cell phones in egypt on camels does that mean they all are modernized? no..most are tho..if u all like doing things the hard way go ahead..but factories do make things easier..if u wanna crap outside instead of use a toilet fine!
kokonutbaby1 2 years ago
if you call my culture primitive it is personal. who are you to judge what is primitive or not? there are things better to do traditional way then purchase cheep mass factory produced shit that pollutes environment. your mind is primitive.
Jaruul 2 years ago 2
kokonutbaby1, you never insulted anyone.
SandraLondon63 2 years ago

I have no problem being identified as a fund. christian..we are forgiving.
kokonutbaby1 2 years ago
you apologize yet you continue to deem. Please, do not bring religion into. I am sure poor turkey that was killed in mass produced factory, truly enjoy your thanksgiving dinner table.
Jaruul 2 years ago
My dear; you really need to get off your high horses & loose your white supremacy attitude. There are things are more complex then your little mind. Just because it works for you it should work everyone else? Do you know/understand the cultures of other? Thus there is no need to enforce your narrow minded views on others. Perhaps, I may not know meaning of "primitive" in English, after all it is my third language.

Jaruul, you are an ignorant fucking idiot,. Do not comment anything anymore.

For your fact Mongolia has 97% literacy rate. Out of 3 million people - 2 million cell phone users. Ger is contracted without a single nail, yet it is practical, light, and durable in harsh Mongolian climate.
