to play a powerchord, u need to find the root note (i think its called) e.g. for an A powerchord u need 5th fret of E string (bottom string.) U put ur index finger there and you get ur ring finger on the note 2 frets down on the string higher. for A powerchord u put ur index finger on 5th fret of E string and ring finger on 7th fret of A string. If u want u can add a pinky to the 7th fret of the D string to make it sound better. U can play powerchords with root notes on either A or E string.

Killjoy is spot on but it might sound a bit confusing, im playing power chords at various positions from 1.13-1.35 in this video if you can see the shape my hand is in.

how are you muting the low e string? are you or are you simply just not hitting it which seems almost impossible, eaither way your one hell of a player hope you can give me some tips on how to play it.

I play power chords with my 1st, 3rd and 4th and then hang my middle (2nd) finger over the top and just rest it on the string to mute it. Make sure to keep playing the bottom E string during the intro to keep the bass E note in there, it gives the intro its creepy sound. Good luck!

Any decent distortion pedal will do the job as long as you mess around with it to find the right sort of tone. I also use a delay pedal for the verses on this song

thanks. but i've messed around with my digitech grunge and there is not much change except for tone, not sound. the sound is still damn undefined and whiney. idk why its whiney. sounds like an elephant.

i got another question. are the wah pedals for smoothing out the sound? so then my guitar wont sound like an elephant?

If your having real trouble getting the right sound from your distortion pedal, just rack up the distortion and tone knobs to the very top and see how that sounds (although your digitech pedal may be different to my behringer). It should give a pretty horrible, messy guitar sound i cant really describe but at least it shouldn't sound like an elephant anymore! Then reduce each setting until you find a sound you like.

Wah-wah pedals aren't for smoothing out the sound of a guitar but the transition between musical notes played by a guitar. To be honest, a wah pedal is more likely to make your guitar sound like an elephant than not haha. The solo from 'You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison' is a prime example of wah pedal use, as is a lot of Jimi Hendrix work. My only advice would still just be to play around with what equipment you have and you are sure to find a tone you like soon
