I appreciate the advice. Im 29 and hurt myself at work. Doctors want me to do cortizone injections but all I keep hearing is that it is only a temporary mask to the problem. I think im gonna keep doing exercises and see a chiropracter
I was watching these hoping you might know something I didn't. I think though that you just got lucky and didn't get hurt that bad. Until about a year ago I was in your position where these kinds of exercises where possible. More recently though the problem has gotten bad enough to inflame the nerve roots going to my legs.
More: It's much worse than the spasms you described. The kinds of crunches you are showing here may very well have helped my problem get worse pushing the disc further out of where it needs to be and back into my nerves. You might consider stability exercises that do not require flexion (bending forward) for which there are many.
Not to say those spasm don't hurt. At the time I didn't think there could be worse. Now I _have_ to take the drugs (still hoping non-intervention methods will work). I get a shot into my spine now, which helps a great deal but the pain, and worse the numbness, is still a big issue.
In addition to exercise a lot of lifestyle changes are necessary, proper posture and all that.
I got that bench about 20 years ago at a sporting goods store (don't remember which one). It was up in the attic until I started this new fitness program. Now I use it every day. You should be able to pick up something similar at any good size sporting goods store.
