Many people have specifically said they went to see the BBC documentary because of comments to these videos, and have thanked me and others for posting this information. What are you doing to help save the slow loris?
@SilvaStrikeDesu we know quite a bit about these particular lorises. They were bought from a pet store in Russia, they are owned by a couple in St. Petersburg in Russia. We don't know if their lorises are still alive, however - no news for nearly 2 years. While it is legal to own a loris in Russia- if a CITES permit is held (highly unlikely) - not one slow loris has ever been imported legally into the country for purposes as a pet. The biggest threat to slow lorises in the wild are humans.
I think that if people REALLY want to help make a point about the Slow Loris being endangered, that it would be better off getting their OWN videos and source material to post on youtube instead of posting it on here. For all you know, this person could have a license to own these Slow Loris for HELPING the species. @LulzFaceX well the documentary is about to be aired worldwide. The UK screening has brought a huge amount of notice, signatures for the appeal to the Indonesian government, donations, etc. It was the documentary that got me involved, and I now do about 1-2 hours a day volunteer work for them, and I'm not the only one. There is hope, if we all do our bit, and better to try than not, surely. If you have a better solution, contact Dr. Anna Nekaris, I'm sure she'd be interested to hear.
I watched the video. The thing is... This save the loris campaign is simply not effective enough. Their numbers are still in decline and all too often (as we all know) infamy often brings fame. That being said i strongly feel there is a better solution that doesn't count on people doing the right thing.. Cause LOL when does that ever actually happen? We have to count on people being selfish and uneducated. Just my thoughts.
@LulzFaceX Also, if the best zoos in the world, with expert care, cannot breed & keep these animals, that have extremely specialised social & dietary needs, it's highly unlikely there are loris ‘nurseries’ that can do this. Tigers are nearly extinct, so too many of the big cats. Pets? Hardly. They also do not breed well in captivity.
@LulzFaceX Slow lorises are almost impossible to breed in captivity. The world captive population of slow lorises bred in zoos world-wide is 109 for N. coucang, N. menegensis, N. bengalensis, and N. javanicus combined and 201 for N. pygmaeus. If we look at the pet lorises on YouTube, we already find more than this number for N. pygmaeus alone. It is therefore nearly impossible that these animals are captive bred.
@LulzFaceX because even the best zoos with the best breeding programs can barely breed them. It's a non-domesticable animal; it can only be tamed (which means needs to be captured in the wild)
So if there were no more wild cats cats woul go extinct suddenly? Ha i think its wayyyyyy more likely they would disappear if we idn't keep em as pets. Either way might as well face it, what's done is done.
Please take this video down. If you care about these poor animals, watch this documentary: bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01bcp7z/hd/Natural_World_20112012_Jungle_Gremlins_of_Java/
NO WORD OF A LIE - THERE WON'T BE ANY LEFT TO ADMIRE SOON.
if you think these animals are cute and are trying to fing where to obtain one watch this documentary and see how sickening the trade in these poor creatures really is!
These animals become docile when feeling threatened. The videos are entirely misleading. If one is bought as a pet, another one is removed from the wild to be sold in the illegal pet trade: their teeth pulled out with scissors or pliers without anesthetic. Babies removed from mothers so young they die. Put in cages that tear their hands & feet. Watch here on YouTube Natural World: Jungle Gremlins of Java. They often die in captivity. no word about Sonya for 2 years. Is she alive?
@DmitrySergeyev, if actually you love this animal, please post a link in your description to the slow loris page in wikipedia and to the BBC documentary on YouTube, Jungle Gremlins of Java: youtube.com/watch?v=dhpw7UqTVnI. The pet trade directly contributes to their extinction & suffering. Help educate people.
@cheesesisgood87 Slow Lorises act calm & docile as a response to a threatening situation. The reason they are endangered is largely because they are so popular as pets in places like Japan and Russia. Watch Jungle Gremlins of Java - youtube.com/watch?v=dhpw7UqTVnI (go to 45 mins if you can't be bothered to watch all) and then come back and comment. These animals are not suitable as pets. They are venemous, smell and are nocturnal. Educate yourself.
Everyone: You can help save the slow loris from abuse by signing two petitions - change.org/petitions/save-the-slow-loris and go to the petition site dot com and do a search for slow loris. Also if you go to Facebook, you can join the group, little fireface project and post your concern there, it will be forwarded to the Indonesian government. Thank you thank you.
To the people who think this is "cruelty": if they were hurting them, they wouldn't be acting happy and spoiled. Yeah I get that they are endangered but if they were in the wild, there wouldn't be any slow loris left.
@cheesesisgood87 what you see as acting happy and spoiled is only a projection. When loris feel stressed or threatened and cannot get away they take a passive posture, which we interprete as cute and as if its enjoyig itself.
When I first watched these 'cute' videos I didn't know the suffering these animals go through in the pet trade or for medical use (sliced in half alive, in Laos, teeth ripped out for the pet trade). Watch Jungle Gremlins of Java - youtube.com/watch?v=dhpw7UqTVnI (go to 45 mins if you can't be bothered to watch all) & help save the slow loris. It's not just about extinction, it's about torture. These animals are not suitable as pets. They are displaying docile behavior as a stress response.
"Even the best breeding facilities have great difficulty breeding lorises, and those that do often have difficulty keeping them alive. It is so easy to get access to wild-caught lorises, it is highly doubtful that a seller who claims to have captive-bred ones is telling the truth"
Primatologist Anna Nekaris, in 2009 discussing the misleading information posted on YouTube.
Slow lorises in the videos are docile because it's their passive defensive reaction to threatening situations. They are frequently sold through websites offering delivery to buyers worldwide. The popularity of the slow loris as a pet means it is now listed amongst the 25 Most Endangered Primates of the World. Most animals entering the pet trade have their teeth cut, few survive this. A study of comments on the videos show a majority saying "where can I get one, I want one as a pet".
@DmitrySergeyev if you care for these animals, please, in your description, link to the BBC Documentary available here on YouTube: Jungle Gremlins of Java, so people can understand what is happening to the slow loris. If you love Sonya and Drinya, help the world save others!
Unfortunately, regardless of where Sonya came from, or the legality of keeping a primate as a pet in Russia, no slow loris has ever been imported into Russia legally for keeping as a pet. Please read the page on slow lorises on Wikipedia. If you love these animals educate yourself before thinking of having one as & watch the YouTube BBC documentary, Jungle Gremlins of Java. The pet trade of these animals is causing their extinction and extreme suffering along the way.
@DmitrySergeyev Sadly these videos are misunderstood by most who watch them. It's illegal in most countries to own them as pets and slow lorises in videos are docile as it's their passive defensive reaction to threatening situations. Please read the page on slow lorises on Wikipedia. If you love these animals post a note on all your videos telling people to educate themselves before thinking of having one as a pet & link to the YouTube BBC documentary, Jungle Gremlins of Java.
There is now a full version of the wonderful documentary on the slow loris, Jungle Gremlins of Java, here on YouTube. Search for it as 'BBC Natural World: Jungle Gremlins of Java' and scroll down beyond the ones that are divided in parts, and you should find the one you can view, all in one part, posted by eDocumentaryVIDEO. Please, everyone, if you love the slow loris, watch this documentary.
Please google "Jungle Gremlins of Java" if you think you want one of these as a pet. The animals are illegally caught in Indonesia and other countries for the pet trade. They are treated inhumanely - teeth ripped out, kept in airless boxes which are thrown about as if they are nothing more than stones, & then sold as 'pets' because they are cute. Some 'exotic' animals don't have to have their teeth ripped out to be sold as pets, these do. The extractions cause infections and sometimes death.
Most slow lorises that are turned into pest have undergone extreme cruelty - its teeth yanked or cut out with scissors, no anesthetic. They get infections from these extractions. The pet trade of these animals is contributing to their extinction. If a slow loris is bought as a pet, another one will be forcibly removed from the wild. Google "Little Fireface Project" and help save the loris by asking for such videos to be removed and informing others about the situation.
To quote Dr Anna Nekaris a scientist who has been studying slow lorises for years, "Even the best breeding facilities have great difficulty breeding lorises, and those that do often have difficulty keeping them alive. It is so easy to get access to wild-caught lorises, it is highly doubtful that a seller who claims to have captive-bred ones is telling the truth." So even if this loris was bred in captivity you can garantee that it's parents were not
IT IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO WANT A LORIS AS A PET. WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW IS THAT THESE ANIMALS ARE RIPPED FROM THE WILD, TREATED BARBARICALLY BY THE ILLEAGAL PET TRADE - THIS INCLUDES WRENCHING THEIR FRONT TEETH & CLAWS OUT - WITHOUT PAIN KILLERS ETC TO MAKE THEM SAFE....
ASIDE FROM BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DEMISE IN THE WILD - IS THAT HOW YOU WANT YOUR FUTURE PET TREATED?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
LOLOLOL Some people make themselves look like utter jackasses. I'm sorry you have to have these dumb comments on your videos. I love them, they're so cute. :) I hope your days haven't been ruined by idiots. <3
@Karma123456789100 If you think they are so cute then why do you support of them fucking dying? Pretty soon there aren't going to be any of these animals left. I'm sorry that anyone slightly intelligent had to read your shitty comment.
These animals are not people. Please don't encourage the trade in endangered species - even if you are a caring and responsible person to these creatures, many hundreds have died as a result of you posting these videos. Please take them down.
The slow loris is a critically endangered primate and should not be kept as a pet. You are promoting the illegal pet trade in endangered species, I suggest you watch the BBC Natural world documentary, Jungle Gremlins.
@illustratorhalt Hear hear. Just watched the documentary on BBC. I'm totally shocked about the plight of this poor creature, which undergoes such extreme cruelty at the hands of poachers and traders. It's on the verge of extinction, fuelled by people posting these "cute" videos. I'm posting comments on as many loris videos as I can.
@mogul10001 this is the same people who that same documentary pointed out was potentially dangerous because they exploit these animals. While I agree their adoring. I don't condone any exotic wild animals as pets especially ones on the endangered list.
i hope people realise one of the main reasons for there endangerment is the fact they WONT MATE even in the wild but if these two mate then they will have accomplished more than any zoo, protection aganecy or nature has accomplished these things have never flourished because of this
It is legal in Russia in case you forgot to research it before posting. Secondly, the owners seem very capable and responsible of Sonya. She is blessed with generous people and even has a boyfriend to keep her company. Dwelling on the morale is pointless. These endangered animals have bigger threats in the wild than in animal trading. Asking to put these domesticated animals back into the wild is asking to shoot it yourself; they are no longer able to survive.
@sesshomaru1414 they don't shoot them; just catch them, pull/clip their teeth out and export them to Russia and Japan as people in both have little regard for anything that may be more vulnerable than themselves and tend to want to please themselves often no matter if it causes any pain or suffering elsewhere.
@sesshomaru1414 but they do NOT live in Russia, and they can only be gotten through ILLEGAL importing and poaching. They actually do NOT have bigger threats in the wild at all. They are the sole poisonous mammal, and even bears will turn away from their smell. The biggest threat to their existence are humans, more specifically: animal traders for selfish people who want a cute looking pet that isn't supposed to be a pet at all
A pet loris is a bad idea. They are a wild animal, illegal to own, and despite their cute appearance they have several characteristics which make them a terrible choice for a pet.
@DmitrySergeyev, Also... Do you know that your Loris' are different species of Loris'??? Sonya is a pigmy Slow Loris, and Drinya is a Slender Loris. They are adorable!!! The cute part is that these two will be able to breed, BUT since they are different types of Loris', they're children will NOT be able to breed. Also... You should look into having a whole room for them, not just a cage. They need enough space to exercise. They are primates first of all. Try buying fake trees for them. ^_^
They look sick and miserable. See their grungy fur? No surprise really. The're being forced out in the daylight, forced to live in conditions they were never meant to be in. Do us a favor and stop your animal cuelty soap opera.
@deceptant Grungy fur? looks perfectly fine to me, you know, hamsters are also nocturnal and yet we keep them as pets and bring them out in the day, they are under no threat so they change their sleeping patterns so they can be looked after. In captivity they are safe, we can breed them and help them rather than them being killed when their homes are cut down. they look happy to me, and healthy, well fed, they can breed and they are safer then they would be in the wild. leave them to it.
@TheAnnieistAnnie Read this, Annie: "Even the best breeding facilities have great difficulty breeding lorises, and those that do often have difficulty keeping them alive. It is so easy to get access to wild-caught lorises, it is highly doubtful that a seller who claims to have captive-bred ones is telling the truth.” - Dr. Anna Nekaris, slow loris anthropologist.
Please, people do not look at these videos and think its OK to own Slow Loris and other wild animals. They are not meant to be kept as pets, let them be in the wilds. These animals are not being bred, they are stolen from their habitats. All you are doing is encouraging poachers to further ravage their already abysmally low numbers. All so you could feel good about having some cute, exotic property.
Well there is one thing. You are so kind to give both these creatures a home, and it is all too obvious that you love them and care so much for them, You give them food and shelter and love, what more do they need ? people say it is cruel to take them away from their natural habitat, but they are an edangered creature, and it is all too obvious that they are safe with loving owners such as you.
@scorpio7ish but they will not breed in captivity only in the wild. as far as i know we no longer use solitery confinment as a punishment because of the phycological damage it causes so why would you think its ok for thesea animals?
@scorpio7ish if you did your homework you would know that they do not breed in captivity thats why they are poached from the wild. they have there teeth pulled out to make them 'safe' no one is saying this loris is abused we are saying the trade as a whole is cruel and threatening the existance of the loris. BTW would you like to spend your entire like in a small wire box??? I think not
adorable.. i wish there were more in the wild. but the reason why most are in captivity is because they barely have any of their habitat left. stupid humans have to have EVERYTHING. we are so damn greedy. we will kill millions of other creatures just for our own selfish needs. i wish these poor little creatures, and many more could live in peace. <3
I saw one of your videos, I thought it was adorable and I had no idea what this creature was, I wanted one for its cuteness. Then I saw your next video and saw it on a hard floor looking very timid, then your 3rd where you teased it with food.. I also read all the comments on how its an endangered species and will die out due to people wanting them for their own entertainment. In this video you have another and tease them both with food, THIS IS ALL CRUEL Think about what you're doing :(
To all of the people that are saying they don't breed in captivity, do some damn research before you make yourself sound stupid. They DO breed in captivity. If they didn't, the sale of them would be impossible due to the fact of how hard they are to find in the wild. Also, there wouldn't be Slow Loris nursery's if they didn't breed in captivity.
@FloridaSucks329 Do some research yourself. They can breed in captivity, but it is so damn rare. They refuse to mate, so also artifical insemination is used, but it often ends up with miscariages. Its always a huge success for every zoo, when new loris is born. Almost 90% of female lorises living in captivity failed to produce a single living offspring. They dont have problems to reproduce in wild. Yes, most of lorises in the shops were captured in wild. Get your facts straight.
whoever agrees with this pet trade is stupid and ignorant.
these animals will be hunted until there are none left in the wild. As they don't breed in captivity, once the "pet" loris's die out these animals will be extinct its as simple as that its just fact.
If you honestly believe these animals are not being harmed please watch the video on here, (youtube-search-slow loris abuse) you are not saving them you are wiping them out and exposing them to horrific abuse.
@ChronoTriggerHappy i dont think they breed in captivaty she probably wants to sell the babies for money thats wat this trade is all about making money
@MegaRazaraza what about when there are no more left in the wild to poach? they dont bread in captivity what happens when the domesticated ones die out? i dont mean to preach but have your read up about this subject or just looked at this vid and made a snap judgement? check out DAILY MAIL web page search KILLER CUTENESS will give you the true side or search slow loris abuse will show you the poachers pulling the teeth out enjoy
@MegaRazaraza theres no need to be vile and abusive by the way search slow loris abuse and tell me ripping out there teeth isnt cruel most that are captured die from infection blood loss or long haul flights get your facts straight before you judge
Did you really buy these pets? For real? They are ILLEGAL, ENDANGERED, they were CAPTURED & TORTURED to make them pet like. You support this by buying it, criminals!!
I am so tired of seeing these animals being paraded as pets. They are endangered in the wild due to the pet trade. We should be campaigning for their natural habitat to be restored and for the evil traders to be prosecuted. People who buy these should also be prosecuted. The trade in these should be illegal.
'The only reason the loris isn't biting the person holding it in the video is because it has had its teeth ripped out with pliers,' said Chris Shepherd. Independent
@Principleofevile how is it self righteous - I am just trying to help the slow loris stay alive in the wild? I never stated the pet trade is the ONLY cause - I am a conservationist so I know that hunting for medicinal purposes and loss of habitat contribute too. Stop being so rude and allow people to state their opnions - its a free world and I have valid reason for complaining about these videos - they increase popularity for these animals as domestic pets - that's a fact sadly.
@Principleofevile errrrmm!!! what? thats the problem people think they can do what they like. dont have a go at us for trying to raise awareness and giving them a voice they are completely defenceless especially now youve taken its teeth and claws away we are just sticking up for these animals its not ok abuse animals if you honestly believe they arnt been abused watch the video on here (youtube-search-slow loris animal abuse) and open your eyes to whats really going on

DansarJensen 2 weeks ago
I mean, specifically, what keeps humans from BREEDING the ones we already have? If they're such a popular pet ..
LulzFaceX 2 weeks ago
@LulzFaceX because even the best zoos with the best breeding programs can barely breed them. It's a non-domesticable animal; it can only be tamed (which means needs to be captured in the wild)
jillssr 1 week ago
So if there were no more wild cats cats woul go extinct suddenly? Ha i think its wayyyyyy more likely they would disappear if we idn't keep em as pets. Either way might as well face it, what's done is done.

@cheesesisgood87 Slow Lorises act calm & docile as a response to a threatening situation. The reason they are endangered is largely because they are so popular as pets in places like Japan and Russia. Watch Jungle Gremlins of Java - youtube.com/watch?v=dhpw7UqTVnI (go to 45 mins if you can't be bothered to watch all) and then come back and comment. These animals are not suitable as pets. They are venemous, smell and are nocturnal. Educate yourself.

Also if you go to Facebook, you can join the group, little fireface project and post your concern there, it will be forwarded to the Indonesian government. Thank you thank you.

To the people who think this is "cruelty": if they were hurting them, they wouldn't be acting happy and spoiled. Yeah I get that they are endangered but if they were in the wild, there wouldn't be any slow loris left.
cheesesisgood87 3 weeks ago

It is so easy to get access to wild-caught lorises, it is highly doubtful that a seller who claims to have captive-bred ones is telling the truth." So even if this loris was bred in captivity you can garantee that it's parents were not

Asking to put these domesticated animals back into the wild is asking to shoot it yourself; they are no longer able to survive.
sesshomaru1414 1 month ago
@sesshomaru1414 they don't shoot them; just catch them, pull/clip their teeth out and export them to Russia and Japan as people in both have little regard for anything that may be more vulnerable than themselves and tend to want to please themselves often no matter if it causes any pain or suffering elsewhere.
amsgal 1 month ago 4
@sesshomaru1414 but they do NOT live in Russia, and they can only be gotten through ILLEGAL importing and poaching. They actually do NOT have bigger threats in the wild at all. They are the sole poisonous mammal, and even bears will turn away from their smell. The biggest threat to their existence are humans, more specifically: animal traders for selfish people who want a cute looking pet that isn't supposed to be a pet at all
jillssr 1 week ago

The cute part is that these two will be able to breed, BUT since they are different types of Loris', they're children will NOT be able to breed. Also... You should look into having a whole room for them, not just a cage. They need enough space to exercise. They are primates first of all. Try buying fake trees for them. ^_^

FloridaSucks329 8 months ago
@FloridaSucks329 check out the video Youtube-search-slow loris animal abuse) they rarely breed in captivity
mattybates78 7 months ago
@FloridaSucks329 Do some research yourself. They can breed in captivity, but it is so damn rare. They refuse to mate, so also artifical insemination is used, but it often ends up with miscariages. Its always a huge success for every zoo, when new loris is born. Almost 90% of female lorises living in captivity failed to produce a single living offspring. They dont have problems to reproduce in wild. Yes, most of lorises in the shops were captured in wild. Get your facts straight.
