Mate, you need to learn from the bad comments. You are a beginner as you say on your site, but you are giving advice which isn't accurate. You obviously don't like people disagreeing with you and seem to see more experienced anglers as the enemy... we are all learning to catch fish, no matter how long we have been fishing. These videos are not very informative and show you in a bad light through your attitude. And how did you manage a book? Self published I assume?

He landed the pike, unhooked it and put it back safely! The towel should be wet to protect the slime layer. What did we do B4 the tackle trade sold us foam? I have caught loads of canal pike over 20 years and many of them have been hand-landed and returned safely with no net or mat - nets can do more damage if the hooks get caught and this guy holds the trace up to prevent this. But, there is room on most cuts for a small mat for those who use them. Don't be scared of birds though pal, lol

its better than nothing a baby changing matt is better but not laying the fish flat is the best answer a 5ft square unhooking matt on a 6ft wide path is just rude and inconciderate other people use the canal your handeling a fish not delivering a baby!

Yes they are inconvienient, but its worth looking after the fish so put up with it, or learn to chin them out and just unhook them in the edge so they are never out the water.

i dont use an unhooking mat either but on the other hand im not scared of the fish either unlike you by the looks of it where does the sense in lifting it by the trace why not just hand land it from the water unhook and then release and as for weighing a fish that weighs 4lb its beyond me
